World's first green roof covered loadbearing straw bale dome. Located in Hruby Sur in Slovakia. According to plans by Prof. Gernot Minke and Ing. arch. Zuzana Kierulfová with help of Mgr. art. Bjørn Kierulf this dome was built on 5 load-bearing straw bale vaults. Straw-bale construction is a building method that uses bales of straw (commonly wheat, rice, rye and oats straw) as structural elements, building insulation, or both. Documented by Mike Napier this film is an insight into this eco-friendly and innovative building process. It is a rare treat for all strawbale building enthusiasts. Fully packed with strawbale building, green roof, clay plastering know-how. Exciting, insightful and inspiring.
Gernot Minke is an architect with a doctorate in structural efficiency and retired professor at the University of Kassel, Germany, where he has directed the Laboratory for Experimental Constructions since 1974. He carried out more than fifty research and development projects and has built more than 100 objects in the field of ecological and sustainable constructions, low-cost houses, earthen constructions, straw fado, bamboo and green roofs. He has been invited as a speaker at more than sixty international conferences; He has given numerous talks, courses and workshops in various countries of the world and is the author of many books. Most known are: „Building with Earth“, which was published in 12 languages, „Building with Straw“ and „Building with Bamboo“. He is considered the Father of Bioconstruction.
Ing. arch. Zuzana Kierulfová Never satisfied with contemporary architecture she became the Chairman of ArTUR, the NGO Sustainable Architecture. Now she fights for the acceptance of renewable and healthy materials in the construction industry.
Mgr. art. Bjørn Kierulf Originally an industrial designer is now a specialist on Passivhaus standards. As a Norwegian, he came to Slovakia already in 1989 - shortly before the velvet revolution. Now he is pushing for another revolution - Passivhaus standard and use of healthy building materials.
