  • Marines know there is one place they can count on for three meals a day. At Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, the mess halls satisfy hundreds of appetites. This is no easy task. Lance Corporal Cheyenne Newman grabbed some chow to bring you the story.

I was a cook in the marine corps from 86 to 92 I'll never forget what our Battalion commander told us as he was trying to keep morale high , he said we only have two forms of motivation , Chow and Mail call . My platoon of cook's cooked our asses off for the men . And I remember we had a lot of friends . I miss them days .

Navy vet here. I introduced a third form in our ship. I created a basic website on our intranet where anyone onboard could answer a movie trivia question to get a movie of their choice. I was an IC in charge of movie schedule for 350 sailors. Even after deployment everyone would ask me you're running the site next deployment. One of my proudest projects in the military.

When I was active USMC 73-77 On every Marine base I was at I always ate on a metal tray. The Marine food was outstanding. I even loved the C-Rats. It was a bit difference deployed on a ship because after we were out to sea for a while we had to eat powdered eggs and milk. I remember during Operation Frequent wind, we had to stay awake all night manning a gun and the Chef brought us out fresh baked bread and butter. When I was at Lejeune every Friday for lunch we had Chinese food and it was my favorite meal of all. They really knew how to prepare it.

My father served in WW2, The Netherlands, France, Sicily/Italy, Germany and North Africa. As a ‘desert rat’ in North Africa they had one pint of water per day, that was to drink, wash, shave whatever they wanted (choice was theirs).
Somewhere along the way they were taken off the front line and given respite at a US camp, I’m not even sure if this was in Libya or if they were in Italy at this point but their battalion was given time at an American camp.
He was stunned at the facilities the American military had, they had showers, proper camp bed cots, and the canteen facilities were the best he’d ever seen. He remembered standing in line with his aluminium tray for breakfast getting eggs, bacon, ‘biscuits’ and then he copied what the guy ahead had done and added maple syrup....
He was still laughing about that twenty years later when he told me that.

Did I mean I ate this 3x a day for 28 years? Obviously not moron. Not even someone who spent 20+ years in the barracks would eat 3x a day, every single day, in the chow hall.

When I got to the fleet and found out that the chowhall is ran by the same civilian company that feeds prisoners he didn't believe me. In their mess hall hardly any of their personal ate there and they had such things as rack of lamb . plus about 30 kinds of deserts, eat as much as your want. I still toss and turn dreaming about it. the food isnt that bad. even being married i was paid a food allowance for me and my family and sometimes i paid the $3 to eat lunch at the chowhall. every chowhall usually has a main line a fastfood line and a salad bar. the main line has stuff like main dishes like chicken, fish, beef, whatever and the fastfood line almost always has burgers either with cheese or without (your choice) and fries. things you find at a fastfood place. and the salad bar has salad stuff, fruit, and sometimes there is a taco bar or other minor foods similar to taco bar like a sandwich bar. there are usually desert fridges in the dining area with slices of pie, cake, cookies whatever. some places have a chest freezer with icecream bars. they have fountain drinks with sodas, water and juices. even sports drinks.

I was in the Marines for 68-77. In 68 your breakfast was eggs anyway you wanted them as long as you wanted them green and scrambled about 3 hours before you got there. They turned green sitting in the pans. The eggs were not bad if you smothered them in creamed chipped beef. We called it shit on a shingle, I will bet they still serve it. The rest of the meals you used lots of ketchup on everything to kill the taste, even in the soup.
In 1969 a in Vietnam Marine was credited for saving an entire rifle company: he shot the cook.
In 1971 they started to change the menu. We could get eggs fried anyway we wanted them and omelets too, they had hamburger lines, soda fountains, soul food, like the food really improved.
The best breakfast meal was always SOS. I would take two slices of buttered toast, two eggs over easy and then smother it with creamed chipped beef. Ooh Rah!
