  • First of a two-part series showing step by step how I rebuild and re seal a leaking CAV injection pump on a 1964 Massey Ferguson 35x tractor.
Part 1 covers removal and dismantling.
This video shows how I did it, not necessarily how it should be done or how you should do it. For a more expert approach, check out Lance Maskell's excellent video tutorial on rebuilding a similar pump over at Bundy Bear's Shed:

Thank You for your Video. You are very good at details like same dimensions and how they all come apart. Your comment to "GreenWoodJohn!" 1 year ago may be the "CLUE" I might be looking for. I have a Cat V80E withe a ?236//248 Perkins and a DPA Lucas CAV pump. Starts fine no smoke or noise and idles great, But will not respond to throttle or extremely lethargic if it does. That basket in the end is going to get a Look See. Now to watch Part 2.

Hey Larry, welcome to the channel and thanks for your feedback. Your symptoms definitely sound like fuel starvation at some point in the system - with older machines, sometimes it's more than one point! I'm guessing you've already tried the obvious like changing fuel filter(s) and blowing through all the fuel lines and injector pipes. On the 35x there's also a little basket filter in the diesel tank's fuel cock itself. There's also a screen in the glass bowl seperator which can get clagged up, if your machine has one. Failing those, I'd agree the basket at the end of the injection pump is also worth a look before diving into the pump itself. Have a look at Lance's videos at Bundy Bear's Shed, he does an excellent job of tearing this pump down and also is incredibly generous and helpful with advice, which you can solicit through the comments. Hope this helps! Do let me know how you get on. Very best, Harris

Hi Roy, thanks for the great feedback, apologies for the slow reply. How did you get on with the 35x? Hope it's all fixed and up and running now. Very best, Harris.

@@myharris thank you! It was the drive shaft in the pump that was snapped off

@@roythewho Ah, that's interesting. I've heard of that happening before, I understand it's the weak spot in this pump, and the reason it can't be used with vegetable oil. Thanks for getting back to me, hope she's purring like a kitten now 😁

I have one of these pumps on a JD engine in an air compressor. If it sits for a month or more, something inside sticks closed and it will not send fuel to the injectors. I've tried various things, including pressurizing the fuel to the inlet. I've had it off and all apart but didn't see any obvious problems. All clean inside. The simplest fix I've found is to take a small ball pein hammer and tap all 'round the pump, on the end, top cover, etc. That seems to loosen up and cure the problem, and it starts up right away after that. Annoying. Looking around the 'net and on youtube I see others have this problem as well.

My pump leaks at the bottom plunger. I put a new set of o rings on the bolt, every gasket possible. Using nitrile gasket now. Can’t figure it out. That plunger you removed with 1/2 inch socket, mine pours diesels and seeps out the side of the gasket. Any ideas?

Anno domini more than anything specific John - hard to start and smoky.

Mine won't start, it's full of fuel but no fuel at the injectors

There's a little basket filter in the plunger assembly in the end cap, probably a good place to start if you don't want to strip the whole pump down. Also check the plunger itself, they can get worn and stick in the bore. Best of luck.

Tap on the pump with a small hammer, for 1 minute. It will free the stuck plunger as Harris says
