    To clarify the situation, we need to understand the following points. The previous contract was signed during the tenure of President Omar Torrijos, and much like the current situation, it lacked public input. Congress made and approved the contract without considering public opinion. The significant change this time is that our nation has become aware of this issue and is actively taking a stance.
    In the past, these contracts were negotiated behind closed doors, just as they are now. However, a pivotal distinction today is that some congresspeople are live-streaming these closed meetings fir the first time in history because our congress does not permit news or public to step inside of their grounds so that they can maintain a monopoly and control over population so now that they are livestreaming it on their social media platforms the public has become aware of this issue. So, this is why this is happening now? It's simple. The contract signed 20 years ago has reached its conclusion. 'Finito.' Do you grasp what that implies? It means we, as a country, have the authority to decide whether we want to RENEW it you see how I put the word renew in caps ? because it is important to understand the details. it's essential to understand that this isn't merely a renewal; it's an entirely new contract.
    This new contract was presented to Congress with an incredibly short notice, approximately 2-3 days, and it was hastily approved Which is also another subject we can talk about but we can save that topic for another day , but it was evident to the public that whenever they have monetary interests that incentivise them they actually go show up and actually they can agree and make laws and contracts for the country but then again only when there's millions of dollars that benefit their banks account and only them which in short words it's called corruption . Another significant departure from the contract signed 20 years ago is that legal experts are examining the document and uncovering substantial contradictions, extensive power imbalances, and a near-monopoly with minimal oversight regarding resource extraction and we haven't even touched taxes and ecological disaster that mining does and after reading the new contract we have found that there is really no legal basis inside that contract that actually force the company to fix the damage, the terms and conditions used in the contract have loopholes that does not specify what they have to rebuild and how in short words the contract lacks clear terms and instructions on how the country will enforce the company to comply the contract states clearly it us up to them to decide IF they can and up to them on the how's and when and everything in between because the contract is the law in this case and if you leave loopholes that does not clarify this details it leaves the company free of will to do what they want with little no to supervision even after communities around the mines have been alertting the authorities of the illegalities of the mining company but just as the corruption is inside of our congress it has also reached people with power who look the other way when this communities demand them to do and enforce the companies to fix their wrong doings. and we have not even touched the point in which the contract also gives them the authority as owners of portion of land on the coast which they are using as a port , ports on our country are rigged by different set of laws this contract has been passed under the table as a mining contract and it's really a combo contract that gives all the control and economical gains to the mining company and because of the contract that they are trying to pass it also gives them legal basis to have control and monopoly of the port but also the possibly businesses that can thrive in their newly obtained land which is now theirs if this contract is signed , the contract does not state it will be theirs But all the looop holes and lack of clarity and lack of legal processes that need to be complied in this magnitude of contracts are all left out by design providing them the opportunity to exploit those wholes and not only that it gives them the legal power to have no legal authorities mess or interfere with their business.. nothing in this contract sounds right and we do not want it period. This information has become public only two decades after the unconstitutional contract was initially signed for a second time.
    The government has portrayed this new contract as lasting for 20-40 years and beneficial for the country. Howeve after analyzing the contract it really is not for 40 years , but for 60. upon a thorough examination by specialized legal experts in the field on this contract, it has become evident that the contract is not only unconstitutional but also fails to benefit our nation in any meaningful way.

    We all have to understand that the protests are for the benefit of all of us who call this country home. Sacrifices sometimes have to be made to achieve lasting results. We don't want mining in this country, it's destructive for the environment and wildlife. Hopefully, the government realizes that and finds a way to cancel this contract, so the country can return to peace.

      Hey papi, that mine has 20 years running. Why now? Why they didn’t bring out their wildlife concerns 20 years ago? Last time they renegotiated the mining contract similar protests erupted. It turned out the mine was financing the protests to have the new contract fail and return to the very favorable old contract. It’s not crystal clear why this all has happened.

    Hello Mary, we're in Betania and would not have noticed the protests if not for the TV news and the roads being as quiet as a Sunday morning! Mind you, our daughter is being sent home early each day by her employer to avoid protests and any travel delays (though she can walk home), and a shortage of fruit and veg. Oh, and Riba Smith and others closing early - and getting more busy in the afternoon. The Metro is fine, if busy. Some buses are running, but not many - I went to Albrook Mall the other day on the Calidonia/Albrook bus which diverted twice, did a U-turn at El Carmen, never did reach Calidonia, but did reach Albrook. The city centre seems OK during the day too, but I wouldn't wander out in the centre in the evening, but over here in Betania it's fine. I guess patience is a virtue. Stay safe.

    To be honest the protest last year and this year protest I think is very telling for Panama although different. The local people are fed up with the corruption. Both locals and expats don't understand the economics either and most are blind to it. The gas price and propane price fixing plus the price fixing of certain foods etc after the protests last year have meant the government has ramped up massive debts in Panama. The Panamanian government is completely broke and it needs the revenue from the mine and canal to function. Not only that the canal has reduced capacity due to low water levels which is further reducing income.
    Unlike most other central and south american countries Panama cannot print dollars to fund its deficits and apease the people (even though that creates inflation anyway) but the problem is Panama government bonds are doing miserably. This means the governments ability to pay back the debt becomes even less likely reinforcing higher rates and thus going in a self reinforcing cycle. It seems like Panama is entering the same self-reinforcing cycle as Venezuela and Argentina in a way just without the soveign currency.
    Because Panama cannot print dollars it relies on mainly external creditors. If the government defaults it won't get any new loans and will be forced to ditch the dollar as the government will collapse because it is running huge deficits so it needs external debt to function. At the same time you will have massive civil and social unrest as all government services will stop and people take advantage of the situation.
    I know it seems far fetched but it seems very likely to happen in Panama and I would prepare accordingly and have a plan B. It's bonds are the worst performing in Central America. People cannot ignore the massive holes in the economy.
    Great video Mary. You are doing great work keeping everyone informed.

    • @USARealityCheck
      @USARealityCheck 10 месяцев назад

      Your comment is the most important one here and from it, I can understand the situation perfectly. Unfortunately, the prognosis is not good. The government needs revenue because it has been subsidizing fuel costs and other necessities to keep the people happy but the canal isn't generating sufficient revenue and now the government is forced to make deals with the devil to appease the masses. I don't know about the corruption but it's unavoidable with humans and always makes things worse. In any event, the canal situation needs to be reversed, if at all possible. Taxing the people will greatly inflame the protests. Loss of government jobs is likely, along with services. It looks like the quality of life will continue to degrade and crime will increase. You are sensible and smart. Plan "B" is definitely in order.

    As the Copper Mine has been in operation for 30 years, I do not grasp why Panamenians are led to revolt against a phantom in present time. Environmental damage is just the obvious reason purported by the organizers.
    Be aware: the copper mine covers approx 20% to the GDP, the Canal brings in 50% to GDP (decreasing due to climate change).
    The economic outlook for Panama is rather grim if the mine will contribute only 15% and the Canal will drop to 30%. The possible lay-off of thousands of good paid jobs will reduce tax income further. The state paid medical system will collabs, social security will be endangered.
    Do not play with fire.
    The destabilization of Panama is of geopolitocal importance. It looks to me that this well organized revolt follows Putin's plan to destabilizing western/american hemisphere.
