Stay safe, ExPats! Panama has occasional outbursts like these but they always pass and situation normalizes. Be patient and again, stay safe.
All environmentalists and unions in Latin America and parts of the world that care for the environment should be supporting Panama too, thank you for spreading the message, let's save planet Earth and the planet's environmental resources for the good of ourselves and our future generations.
Thanks , as a panamanian woman , with my first grandchild who recently celebrate the second year of life … i really apreciate your comment i am sure that’s come from your good heart… we already lost much of the river with too much dam, Panamá was green . Now is almost gone .
Hi Mary, this is the fist time I saw a video from your channel. Im a Pananamanian and really melt my heart watching you almost crying for our country at the end of the video, you truly love Panama❤. Thanks for your great effort to keep the US expats and US tourist well informed about the situation we are experince right now, places to avoid and recommedations all based in your own experience for being a resident. God bless you and your housband, stay safe. 🇵🇦 🇺🇲
Thank you so much! When a Panamanian is happy with what I am saying, then I know I'm doing a good job. Thank you, and best wishes and safety to you and your family.
We want to preserve our diversity in fauna and flora, we want to preserve our cristal clear water in rivers and ocean of which we are proud of!!! I have never seen my country as United as we are today and we are very proud of our unity!!❤
Mary is out of place to speak for us and spreading fear mongering. Is crazy I’m watching this video! She’s out of place.
Select the right people to be voted into the Legislative body, people of strong personalities who can't be corrupted.
I wish the best for beautiful Panama.
Appreciate your dedication to getting the information out and trying to help keep people safe.
Thank you Mary for all the work that you do! You are a Rockstar! You are greatly appreciated for all your research!
To clarify the situation, we need to understand the following points. The previous contract was signed during the tenure of President Omar Torrijos, and much like the current situation, it lacked public input. Congress made and approved the contract without considering public opinion. The significant change this time is that our nation has become aware of this issue and is actively taking a stance.
In the past, these contracts were negotiated behind closed doors, just as they are now. However, a pivotal distinction today is that some congresspeople are live-streaming these closed meetings fir the first time in history because our congress does not permit news or public to step inside of their grounds so that they can maintain a monopoly and control over population so now that they are livestreaming it on their social media platforms the public has become aware of this issue. So, this is why this is happening now? It's simple. The contract signed 20 years ago has reached its conclusion. 'Finito.' Do you grasp what that implies? It means we, as a country, have the authority to decide whether we want to RENEW it you see how I put the word renew in caps ? because it is important to understand the details. it's essential to understand that this isn't merely a renewal; it's an entirely new contract.
This new contract was presented to Congress with an incredibly short notice, approximately 2-3 days, and it was hastily approved Which is also another subject we can talk about but we can save that topic for another day , but it was evident to the public that whenever they have monetary interests that incentivise them they actually go show up and actually they can agree and make laws and contracts for the country but then again only when there's millions of dollars that benefit their banks account and only them which in short words it's called corruption . Another significant departure from the contract signed 20 years ago is that legal experts are examining the document and uncovering substantial contradictions, extensive power imbalances, and a near-monopoly with minimal oversight regarding resource extraction and we haven't even touched taxes and ecological disaster that mining does and after reading the new contract we have found that there is really no legal basis inside that contract that actually force the company to fix the damage, the terms and conditions used in the contract have loopholes that does not specify what they have to rebuild and how in short words the contract lacks clear terms and instructions on how the country will enforce the company to comply the contract states clearly it us up to them to decide IF they can and up to them on the how's and when and everything in between because the contract is the law in this case and if you leave loopholes that does not clarify this details it leaves the company free of will to do what they want with little no to supervision even after communities around the mines have been alertting the authorities of the illegalities of the mining company but just as the corruption is inside of our congress it has also reached people with power who look the other way when this communities demand them to do and enforce the companies to fix their wrong doings. and we have not even touched the point in which the contract also gives them the authority as owners of portion of land on the coast which they are using as a port , ports on our country are rigged by different set of laws this contract has been passed under the table as a mining contract and it's really a combo contract that gives all the control and economical gains to the mining company and because of the contract that they are trying to pass it also gives them legal basis to have control and monopoly of the port but also the possibly businesses that can thrive in their newly obtained land which is now theirs if this contract is signed , the contract does not state it will be theirs But all the looop holes and lack of clarity and lack of legal processes that need to be complied in this magnitude of contracts are all left out by design providing them the opportunity to exploit those wholes and not only that it gives them the legal power to have no legal authorities mess or interfere with their business.. nothing in this contract sounds right and we do not want it period. This information has become public only two decades after the unconstitutional contract was initially signed for a second time.
The government has portrayed this new contract as lasting for 20-40 years and beneficial for the country. Howeve after analyzing the contract it really is not for 40 years , but for 60. upon a thorough examination by specialized legal experts in the field on this contract, it has become evident that the contract is not only unconstitutional but also fails to benefit our nation in any meaningful way.
I been in Panama for 30 years now . And the people are right now not the government.
I think you for the video . God bless
Very informative. I laughed out loud several times, and the dog was a nice homey touch.
I am glad finally Panamanians are fighting for their country. Panama is One of the must beautiful place in the world and a lot of differents country want their resources and land . God bless Panama and keep fighting and defend your country. 👊👊👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Love the dog pooping at the 27 minute mark... Says it all! 😆
I had NO IDEA that happened! I haven't even watched the video, haven't had time! Leave it to the dogs to explain the shituation in 1 minute vs my 40!!
Thanks for doing this... So appreciated. Try to get some sleep!
We all have to understand that the protests are for the benefit of all of us who call this country home. Sacrifices sometimes have to be made to achieve lasting results. We don't want mining in this country, it's destructive for the environment and wildlife. Hopefully, the government realizes that and finds a way to cancel this contract, so the country can return to peace.
Hey papi, that mine has 20 years running. Why now? Why they didn’t bring out their wildlife concerns 20 years ago? Last time they renegotiated the mining contract similar protests erupted. It turned out the mine was financing the protests to have the new contract fail and return to the very favorable old contract. It’s not crystal clear why this all has happened.
@@user-xe8vv6qj1bWhy now? Because we've now seen the damage caused first-hand. Do you really think we're going to let a bunch of corrupt politicians destroy our natural resources because they got bribed by a mining company? JFC wake up!

To bad you’re now willing to live without all the benefits of mining. Let’s start by closing the canal. Not driving your cars. No phones. No electricity. And to be frank, if you have a crap about the environment maybe stop burning tires or go clean up your filthy coasts, bays. River sides, and road sides. The garbage is everywhere.
Well said,good coment.@@timpeters3039
Sooooo, dog pooping over your left shoulder while you were talking was hilarious! Even funnier when he moved and turned to get his butt in the camera angle, was like he planned it!
Today Reville Pharmacy in Boquete WA'd me to ask if I needed meds to be delivered as they were no longer getting new supplies. I am diabetic plus so I got to order 2 of my meds and they were delivered to the house. I really appreciated their thoughtfulness in contacting me on a Saturday yet!! If this situation continues for weeks, then many who need meds will be in trouble. I wonder if deliveries are being made at night if barriers are unmanned after dark?
Well done, Mary, thank you! ❤
The work you are doing is incredibly valuable. Thank you so much! Also, I agree with you that the issues involved are much more complicated than the food-and-fuel protests in 2022, and it is hard to see how this can be resolved.
There is no going to be any negotiations with the government, we the people decided on the streets that we don’t want absolutely any mining multinational in our country and that is it…
They sold panama 🇵🇦 to the maple boys in Canada 😂😂😂😂
Hello Mary, we're in Betania and would not have noticed the protests if not for the TV news and the roads being as quiet as a Sunday morning! Mind you, our daughter is being sent home early each day by her employer to avoid protests and any travel delays (though she can walk home), and a shortage of fruit and veg. Oh, and Riba Smith and others closing early - and getting more busy in the afternoon. The Metro is fine, if busy. Some buses are running, but not many - I went to Albrook Mall the other day on the Calidonia/Albrook bus which diverted twice, did a U-turn at El Carmen, never did reach Calidonia, but did reach Albrook. The city centre seems OK during the day too, but I wouldn't wander out in the centre in the evening, but over here in Betania it's fine. I guess patience is a virtue. Stay safe.
Im hearing and watching your video just to practice my english comprehension … i understood 99.percent of all your words … thanks for been part of our country. You are so kind.
This deals with the mining going on in Panama connected to the company Blackrock. When things have to go to the supreme court, it’s political. And this is not the first time that this issue has gone to the supreme court there.
Your video was so long the spider already started to build a net :) Thanks, good video
😂😂🕷🕸 It's true! I think it may have evolved into a new species during that time as well!!
No a la mineria por el vien del pueblo panameño que viva panama
To be honest the protest last year and this year protest I think is very telling for Panama although different. The local people are fed up with the corruption. Both locals and expats don't understand the economics either and most are blind to it. The gas price and propane price fixing plus the price fixing of certain foods etc after the protests last year have meant the government has ramped up massive debts in Panama. The Panamanian government is completely broke and it needs the revenue from the mine and canal to function. Not only that the canal has reduced capacity due to low water levels which is further reducing income.
Unlike most other central and south american countries Panama cannot print dollars to fund its deficits and apease the people (even though that creates inflation anyway) but the problem is Panama government bonds are doing miserably. This means the governments ability to pay back the debt becomes even less likely reinforcing higher rates and thus going in a self reinforcing cycle. It seems like Panama is entering the same self-reinforcing cycle as Venezuela and Argentina in a way just without the soveign currency.
Because Panama cannot print dollars it relies on mainly external creditors. If the government defaults it won't get any new loans and will be forced to ditch the dollar as the government will collapse because it is running huge deficits so it needs external debt to function. At the same time you will have massive civil and social unrest as all government services will stop and people take advantage of the situation.
I know it seems far fetched but it seems very likely to happen in Panama and I would prepare accordingly and have a plan B. It's bonds are the worst performing in Central America. People cannot ignore the massive holes in the economy.
Great video Mary. You are doing great work keeping everyone informed.
Your comment is the most important one here and from it, I can understand the situation perfectly. Unfortunately, the prognosis is not good. The government needs revenue because it has been subsidizing fuel costs and other necessities to keep the people happy but the canal isn't generating sufficient revenue and now the government is forced to make deals with the devil to appease the masses. I don't know about the corruption but it's unavoidable with humans and always makes things worse. In any event, the canal situation needs to be reversed, if at all possible. Taxing the people will greatly inflame the protests. Loss of government jobs is likely, along with services. It looks like the quality of life will continue to degrade and crime will increase. You are sensible and smart. Plan "B" is definitely in order.
Hi Mary, thank you so much for your hard work in keeping us informed in a professional way. We appreciate your updates and insights very much.
Thanks for your information over the protest!!!!
You! Are AWESOME!! Mary, your delivery is focused, critical, controversial, exceedingly helpful and passionate. You would make an outstanding Project Manager, and I wish!!! that someone of your caliber had been on my risk and mitigation teams.

I love you Mary and Brian!! We are flying from Nashville to PTY next Saturday. As usual we are spending the night in the City. Our flight to Pedasi from Albrook on Air Panama has been cancelled. However, we are flying from Albrook to Chitre on Monday November 6th. I prefer that to the 4 hour drive from Panama City to Chitre. Chitre to Pedasi is an about an hour barring protests. We are hopeful that we dont get stuck again! Wish us good luck and God Speed!!
" Hoping for the BEST , and Coping with the REST "
Fits a lot of scenarios in my day to day life.
It is definitely better to be prepared before the coping starts.
Thanks for your informative video. We hope all works out well as we wish to spend more time in Panama.
Road closer poped up on me in Santiago I tried to Google map my way out of the road closer and the map took me towards a big rock muddy steep road and my 2wd ran 4 almost got stuck sliding back, by the grace of God no one was behind me and I was able to use gravity to help the car keep going backwards till I found a clearing big enough for me to turn around.
You definitely need a 4wd high truck out here.
This is why I make it very clear....do NOT take backroads!! Glad you made it out safely!
I'm headed down to Panama in a month. Hopefully everything gets resolved in favour of the people. I think everyone deserves a break with the crazy cost of inflation.
I'm so sad 😢 markets are short of food and limited on supplies also there closing early 😢
My bf is stuck in Santiago de Veraguas and very ill. These protests are not allowing him to leave the area to get access of medical treatment and I'm furious. Protest all you want, but not allowing someone access to medical treatment is complete bullshit!
Has he sent someone to the closure and plead his case? They MIGHT let him through if you can reason with them enough.
@IGoPanama he apparently tried and waited for hours with nothing. How is that helping anyone's cause?
People say the government did not consult the people and corruption is said to be a big problem.
I feel bad for the people there.
Good video! Keep going!
Greetings from Bocas
Are the San Blas Islands still open? Maybe I can bring my fishing gear to catch my own meals.
Thank you for this!
I was told not to take back roads. Last summer I was stuck for 9 hours on my way to city with my son. It was not fun, but luckily I had water and snacks. It is always good to be prepare, I agree with you on that.
Just got back from Panama City it’s wild
Thank you for your update!
America looks better and better to me
It took my worker yesterday 7hrs to go from Coronado to his home close to Rio Hato. Just saying..
From NO. It sounds like you are in hurricane mode. Thank you for all you do
As a Galveston girl, you hit the nail on the head! Hurricane mode!
Disappointed that there's NO information about David airport or the city. David is the second largest city in Panama. You state '"don't travel beyond Santiago," and I thought " from which direction?" As to Puerto Armuelles, the fruit and vegy stands are stocked full. Great info if you live in Panama City, but unhelpful for those of us who need to travel from or to the David airport, or to the hospital, etc.
I talked about Chiriqui. You can't even get into David. I post updates on the website every houro. Look there.
What about travel from the city to Penonome. Would you recommend that? And you say it is best at night?
Go to the website for updates. www.igopanama.com/news/october-2023-panama-protests-information
Thank you! I hope things get better in Panama.

Thanks! This is what we used to call a revolution.
Hi Mary and Brian! The protests have not really affected us, although we watched them close down Avenida Balboa and La Cinta Costera😳 - Wifey and I had to hit the restaurants near the Yoo so I think we are gaining weight.😱We have not gambled on using Ubers to go to the Multiplaza. Hugs
I liked the way you said My Town, Penonome 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭. And yes the highway to the country inside is closed by some hours, even i could not travel to Penonome this weekend, i had to stay in the city 🥵🥵🥵🥵.
That's a HUGE compliment. Thank you! I'm glad you don't live in Veraguas or Vigui!! 😂
The protests in Chitré do have set hours. 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM.
They protest about the enviroment from mining yet they have no problems blocking the roads with burning tires in capira

Thank you for this kind of video. Thanks to you, one of our strategies will be to have a 1-month supply of food at home at all times. 😊
😢
Omg! Yes, it is way different than last summer. It seems to be way worse base on what I see on social media. I hope it stops soon. It is worrisome for the whole country of Panama, especially with the shortage of food, gas, medicine etc, due to rode closures. Wish you the best to all of you guys in Panama. It’s not getting better, good lady.
As the Copper Mine has been in operation for 30 years, I do not grasp why Panamenians are led to revolt against a phantom in present time. Environmental damage is just the obvious reason purported by the organizers.
Be aware: the copper mine covers approx 20% to the GDP, the Canal brings in 50% to GDP (decreasing due to climate change).
The economic outlook for Panama is rather grim if the mine will contribute only 15% and the Canal will drop to 30%. The possible lay-off of thousands of good paid jobs will reduce tax income further. The state paid medical system will collabs, social security will be endangered.
Do not play with fire.
The destabilization of Panama is of geopolitocal importance. It looks to me that this well organized revolt follows Putin's plan to destabilizing western/american hemisphere.
Panamá está en serios problemas, quiten el visado para nosotros para entrar al.norte
