This is Kusitetsu in takadanobaba.I am familiar with this neighborhood.
Takadanobaba has many cheap restaurants and izakaya because this is the town for students.It has Waseda uni and many prep schools.
Kusitetsu is a branch of toriyasu group which have two other yakitori places in takadanobaba area.Yakitori of those places are cheap and high quality which I highly recommend.One is located on the waseda street and the other is located on the sakae -dori.The thing in the miso soup is called tsumire.

Awesome info, we loved that food. We live in Musashi-Urawa now and there aren't very many fun places to eat. We may move into Tokyo soon, hopefully we can find a neighborhood like Takadanobaba with lots of cheap good places. Thanks for the message! -Eric

The Donki in Akihabara is fantastic! As you mentioned, it's a really good place for omiyage, and the arcade is probably my favourite in Akiba. It's never too crowded or completely filled with smoke like most are.
I really like that arcade for rhythm games, but it's hard to beat Taito HEY! for general arcading. -Eric
Definitely enjoyed Taito HEY! as well. It was the first arcade that I found with a large rhythm gaming section.

I had found Choya Umeshu at a local Liquor store here in Chicago. I didn't like it, it was kinda bitter. I had expected it be sweet as it was a dessert wine.

Yeah the company that made Twinkies did go bankrupt, but a Mexican outfit called "Groupo Bimbo" bought out the company and so it and all the other foods they made are back in production. So SaraLee isn't dead, but she's now a Bimbo™.... brand.

It's chicken nanban. There are some Japanese dishes that bear nanban. And nanban is South East Asia.
