Might be correlated to the fledging but I can’t tell for sure, I just can tell they don’t even react to babies which lie one foot next to the nest.
The mother doesn't have to be concerned about injuring the dead one but picking up a live nestling like that would be dangerous to the nestling. They are fragile.

May be combination of multiple factors. The cuckoo missed optimal hatching timing; over exhausted pushing host chick etc. If I'm not mistaken, there was data indicated the cuckoo survival rate less than 40%
