The Most Cursed Football Club In England

  • Stoke City have among the richest owners in world football, no other teams in the top two tiers of English football within almost an hour of them, and they have spent an absolute fortune over the past decade.
And yet, Stoke just seem to be getting progressively worse, now finding themselves just one place above the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone.
So what's going on? Are Stoke City just cursed? Well, in this video, HITC Sevens ponders that question, whether there is something deeper afoot, and - I suppose - what on Earth is going on at Stoke City.

Several years ago when Stoke were in the Prem, our management decided to get rid of player such as Glenn Whelan, Phil Bardsley and Jon Walters only to 'swap' them for silky smooth continental players such as the Portuguese midfielder Imbula (who cost 18 million pounds and was useless). We tried to move forward as a Prem team with this thinking. Players such Whelan, Bardsley and Walters are absolute bulldogs who would guarantee Stoke Prem status. Those who replaced them were useless fairies, so we got relegated.

    • @LezDentz
      @LezDentz 3 месяца назад

In my opinion the rot set in when we foolishly sold Robert Huth when we didn't need to, followed by the players you mentioned, and everything went downhill after that. It is a parallel to the 1970's when we sold the lynchpin of the team, Jimmy Greenhoff, and every other decent player followed him out. Hudson, Salmons, Mahoney, Pejic, Shilton. In both cases the unavoidable decline was followed by the inevitable relegation.

Honestly one of the biggest issues with Stoke besides goal scoring and opportunities created is we have no identity anymore. We moved away as mentioned in the video from the strong, physical football to the flair style football and bringing in signings who had a poor work ethic and players who weren't established and wasting of money it ultimately led to the downfall of us. Even to this day we still don't as I told my step dad at the time we will stay relegated and almost got relegated again. People also miss that Butland was such a crucial part of our survival for a number of years when he went through problems with the air hostess Stoke have had a lot of problems both on and off the pitch.

Stoke isn't cursed at all. It's just bad recruitment since January 2016 that started the trend of mismanagement. Signing managers and players without due diligence can take a well organized club into mediocrity. Good news for Stoke for now is they aren't the worst club in the Championship and they have owners who are legitimate fans of Stoke unlike many other owners in the world. However, how long can they keep this up. Sooner or later, that bubble will burst and the fallout will be catastrophic unless they change their ways quickly.

Most my family are Stoke fans. Really impressed by the depth of this video. My brother who has talked to me in depth about Stoje's demise has brought up most the points raised over the years. The League cup semi v Liverpool does seem a key sliding door moment. And Wimmer. Oh dear.
Only part i would add is the pre 1980s.
1930s Stoke nearly won the league but a key player left for Colombia (as you do) and a friendly in Ireland just b4 a key league match lead to fatigue and them losing out.
Ww2 robbed Stoke of the peak Stanley Matthews who Pele rated a better player than him.
And finally. In 1970s Stoke had a very talented squad. Nearly won the League mid 70s and won League cup. Then an uninsured stand caught fire and the best players were sold off. 8 years later Stoke were relegated.
Not so much a curse but a lot of What-Ifs.
Still. Could be worse. I am an Evertonian.😀

Leicester is a non story. Recently relegated Premier league club with a squad miles ahead of every other team in the league and bags of parachute money.
Ipswich is more interesting but they're not the underdog people are making out. They were among the bookies favorites to challenge for the championship before the season began and had been outspending Championship clubs even when in league 1

@@MenWithVen With Leicester, I actually disagree. The parachute money is insane, yes, but they are still breaking record after record in the championship which I don't see many clubs do. (Leeds and Southampton just from this season) A lot of Championship clubs are rich, but unlucky/poorly managed like Stoke ad West Brom. I like Alfies content as he doesn't just focus on the prem or top 5 leagues and I think that these clubs doing exceptional is something to be celebrated.

I would argue us Bolton Wanderers are far more cursed than Stoke. Check the team who’s been in the top flight the most without winning the league. Also the season which caused our downfall, Fabrice Muamba had a heart attack finished his career season before Stuart Holden had career ending challenge what finished his career, Lee Chung Yong had his leg broken in a pre season friendly. Marc Tierney who we bought played 1 game before his career was ended. Sean Davies who we bought played 3 games before he had a bascially career ending injury. Then check the last game which relegated us against Stoke funnily enough where the referee allowed a goal where the keeper was pushed into the net. All this accumulated the game after we played Stoke in a Fa Cup semi final season before when we lost 5-0

The biggest misfortune Stoke have had, has been missed off.
In 1976 the Butler Street stand roof blew off. This was a era when Stoke were playing in Europe and for 3 seasons in the 70s finished in the top 6.
To pay for the repairs we had to sell and we weren't the same club after that.
In recent years I wouldn't say anything is particularly cursed. Our recruitment hasn't been good enough. We are constantly starting from afresh in terms of managers and players. It doesn't seem like it now but one day, somebody will find the right mix and we'll have better times, that's football.
Stoke are in the same bracket as Sunderland, Middlesbrough, WBA, Derby, Sheffield Wed, Leeds, Bolton, Blackburn. The list goes on, clubs who were having good times and somehow it all got away.
In the Prem now Forest are struggling and Wolves are slowly heading in the wrong direction. Football is a very tough business to sustain success

I feel when mentioning Michael O'Neill you did neglect to mention how he brought the wage bill down and that did hamper him when recruiting players. It may be my personal bias shining through here though as I feel he was harshly sacked last year and our recruitment issues aside, Alex Neil has done very little so far to make me feel he's the right man for the long term. As far as the Coates family are concerned, I have my gripes with them, I want the club to succeed and for them to heed the fans' pleas to modernise the football infrastructure, yet in spite of all that I wouldn't trade them for anyone considering they do have the club's best interests at heart.

I wouldn't say Stoke is almost an hour away from Wolverhampton - It's only 33 miles and the M6 connects the two cities, so long as junction 10 is clear it's not going to take an hour.
    The Train takes 30-36 minutes.
Derby is only 34 miles away via the A-50 - Again traffic might be an issue but with clear roads that's nowhere near an hour.
It is a 46 minute train journey - not sure why the train takes so much longer to go an extra mile but 3/4 of an hour is not almost an hour.

    🇧🇬 🇧🇬 🇧🇬
Day 6 - Alfie, please do a video on the pitiful situation the Bulgarian national football team is currently in. Here are a couple of points to give you an idea about what I'm talking about:
    - Currently, the team is in a streak of 8 winless games, at the bottom of its qualification group for the 2024 Euro, with no chances of qualifying, after losing to opponents such as Montenegro and Lithuania.
    - The team's last win was almost a year ago - on 16.11.2022 in a friendly against Cyprus. Our last win in an official match was more than a year ago - on 26.09.2022 against North Macedonia.
    - The national football team of Bulgaria has been constantly performing bad for at least the last 20 years. The last big tournament we played was the 2004 Euro in Portugal, where we were humiliated in the group stage.
    - Many supporters blame the current bosses of the Bulgarian Football Union for this downfall. The most notable of them are Borislav Mihaylov, Emil Kostadinov and Yordan Lechkov - 3 players who were part of the great 1994 WC team which reached the semi-finals of the tournament. Sadly, those people's success as players has been overshadowed by their lack of capability or willingness to resolve many of the problems in our football - the out-of-date training systems, the poor football infrastructure etc. What's worse is that they refuse to resign a failure after another and they have changed the rules of the union in a way that makes them irremovable for more than 18 years.
    - Recently a couple of players from the next generation - Dimitar Berbatov, Stiliyan Petrov and Martin Petrov started a campaign, trying to overthrow the aforementioned but as I said the rules are in the bosses' favour.
    - Meanwhile fans are getting really angry with the situation and are starting to take measures. Last weekend, during many matches of the First and Second Football Leagues the fans were chanting against Mihaylov and company and displayed banners against them. Of course, the BFU fined the clubs for "obscene chants and banners".
    - There is a campaign on social media calling fans of all local clubs to put their differences aside and come to the Euro qualifier with Hungary on 16.11 and show their disapproval of the current BFU leaders.
That's the main points, I'm sure that if you dig a little you'll find much more. Please consider doing such a video, the anti-BFU sentiments are getting stronger and we need to disturb those self-serving ex-legends in every way possible. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Besides a moaning group of supporters who whines when a new manager joins to bring change and does not bring us top of the table within the first 10 games I really think one of the biggest issues is consistency. Both in recruitment and on the medical/physio department. Throughout all the managers and all the players who has been through the club gates the last 7-8 years we have always been quite subtable to injuries hence the lack of consitency. I think the recruitment is spot on now and out team looks more sexy and in balance since the good PL days.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. Disinterested does NOT mean uninterested. It means neutral. If Joe Biden or Sunak don’t have a vested interest in the Israel-Palestine war, they are disinterested. It means they don’t support either side. It doesn’t mean they’re not interested, but it means they’re neutral. I might want to watch Stoke vs Man United, so I’m interested, but I don’t care who wins, so I’m disinterested. Jesé was UNinterested at Stoke, not DISinterested. He wasn’t neutral, he lacked interest, so he was uninterested. You can be interested but disinterested. You cannot be interested but uninterested. If you’re implying lack of interest, you use the word uninterested. I understand why you use disinterested, I’ve wanted to use it myself because it sounds like a smarter word, but it comes off terribly once you realise that you’ve used it in the wrong sense of the term. I’m sorry, it’s stupid I know, but it’s a misuse of our language I’ve heard too many times, on this channel and even Tifo. It seems to be the most common English usage mistake and it’s got to stop. Rant *finally* over.
