      Having been a fan of both your channels, I decided on the U-Phoria 204HD. Very happy with it. I still have to handle a slight buzz, but I've narrowed that down to the electrical circuit in my room. If I run an extension cord from another room, the buzz is gone, so I was thinking I might get this for use in the room I'm in:
      www.amazon.com/dp/B0009GI65Q/?coliid=I874HPYKJFW7W&colid=2BFDH3LPKUJ0O&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

      @@honeste6652 Hey, I'm not to sure the power conditioner will work. Buzzing sounds usually come from groundloops. Are you using powered monitors on your 204 and are you hearing in buzz in the monitors? Maybe you could try the Behringer HD400 isolator to connect between your interface and the monitors.

    • @honeste6652

      @@JulianKrause Hey Julian. Buzz may not be the right word. It's more like a hum, but only when I'm recording through my DBX 286s on mic recordings. It doesn't matter if I'm using a condenser or dynamic mic. I can get some of the noise out using the DBX 286s, but if I simply just plug my DBX 286s in an extension cord in another room, the hum goes away. Wouldn't that be the same as negating the ground loop problem?
      My monitors are JBL 305p MKII. People complained about the hiss on these, but I gave it a go and bought them about a month ago. I had the same problem, until I used a balanced TRS cable from the 204HD to those and also now only notice it when I turn on my USB connected external drive bay. Since I only use that bay for sound recordings, I only hear it through those monitors while it's on. I'll be solving that at some point when I get an internal SATA card to increase my options in my machine.
      I have zero sound treatment in my room, but my recordings sound decent raw and great after I've processed them in post. I just want to get rid of this hum, since it's really the biggest problem I have with the raw recordings. Anything to kill unwanted noise in the raw recordings means I'll have a less of a processed sound in the end.

    • @JulianKrause
      @JulianKrause  5 лет назад +1

      @@honeste6652 That makes it even more certain that it is a groundloop. Just to make sure I understand you correctly: You don'T hear the hum in your monitors but there is some hum in your audio recordings. Right? Where is your output dial on your dbx 286 set at?

    I now have both. I use the legacy driver from the German Behringer site that has been linked to in other comments. They both work extremely well for my amateur purposes, especially now that I am following Julian's recently posted advice about setting the gain high enough. The clipping level mismatch is still there, alas, with the level in software running around -2dB. That said, clipping can still be avoided by aiming for the -18 to -12dB or so sweet spot we are taught to. The UMC22 is definitely the better unit, and to my ears it sounds perceptibly better, though Julian's tests suggest one should really hear no difference.

    So using ASIO4ALL, i have always experienced latency issues (I use an MXL990 for my mic), but they've always been so minor, that I've over looked that issue. I never even though to download the drivers that are meant for my audio interface. Anyway, i downloaded the drivers, and was very impressed with the lower latency it offers (3ms). However, all was well until i tried mixing. Every time i chose a new plug in, i would be greeted with awful crackling sounds. I know it's not my computer, as i recently upgraded (CPU usage is at 6% when FL is open). There are no crackling sounds when using ASIO4ALL or FL STUDIO ASIO, which leaves me to conclude that it must be Behringers shitty drivers that haven't been updated in over 3 years, or could it be something else? I've tried disabling unnecessary sound drivers in my system settings, and that also didn't work. Has anybody had this problem, and if so, is there a fix?

      @leswright4108 4 года назад

      @@Pentti_Hilkuri, it doesn't really solve the problem and in my hands seems to make the problem worse in that when the interface clips software tops out at -6dB and you really can't budge it from there. Despite Julian's reservations, I have been working with the ASIO4ALL drivers in Cakewalk, Waveform Free, and Reaper, and manage to get acceptable results. Indeed, Reaper and Waveform allow you to adjust input gain to bring the clipping levels into alignment, and Cakewalk, for some reason, seems reasonably aligned with no grief at all. Also, I have the UMC202HD Behringer driver on my machine (it is a good one and enhances the performance of that device), and it does not coexist nicely with 2.8.40 driver for the UM2. So I took the latter off and when using the UM2 I use ASIO4ALL pointed at the generic Windows USB Audio Codec--you do this by calling up the ASIO4ALL control panel in software or from its icon on the task bar.. Despite Julian's experience I have very few problems. But I do agree that Behringer should provide a driver that settles this clipping level issue. The UMC202HD doesn't have it, nor it seems, do more expensive inferfaces from Roland and Rode, etc.--they just "work."

    • @Pentti_Hilkuri
      @Pentti_Hilkuri 4 года назад

      @@leswright4108 I have have the UMC204HD and in Win7 I have to use really old driver to fix the -6dB clipping problem (2.23?), in Win10 the newest UMC driver works properly.

    • @leswright4108
      @leswright4108 4 года назад

      I take it all back. I took ASIO4ALL off e, installed the 2.8.40 driver for the UM2 and the reinstalled the specific driver for the UMC202HD. I educated myself about how to properly access the specific audio settings, and in tinkering with those buffer settings and latency rates I figured that on my modest little machine I shouldn't expect miracles with respect to latency rates. Once I eased up on those settings everything records fine and plays back without snaps or pops. The drivers coexist fine with each other, and as long as I set up things correctly in whatever DAW I am using (these days the focus is on Cakewalk) all is fine. As far as the clipping misalignment goes, it still happens with both these interfaces, and if I really insist on 0 dB as my clipping threshold I can ad about 2.5 dB input gain. But this seems pointless as in proper gain staging the initial tracks should peak rather short of 0dB and we aren't in clipping danger there.

    The reason why these cheaper Behringer interfaces have such poor dynamic range (no less than 71 dB unweighted below clipping) much like that on Behringers Xenyx mixers USB mode is not because of anything to do with the hardware but the shitty "16 bit" converters that might as well have been recycled from a bunch of early 90s Soundblasters.
    Today I was looking at the noise floor in my DAW for my old Xenyx board that I hadn't used in years, hooked up with USB with everything down wondering "if these mixers are supposed to be quiet like people say whats causing all this noise and why does it sound so bad" and decided to pull out the plug out of the board. The noise floor with it's infamous nasty mid range spike remained at the exact same level on the meter even though the board had no power going to it. The USB mode was providing power only to the onboard ADC and with that same noise floor with nothing going into it, it became clear where the problem lay. I actually measured the noise of the Xenyx through it's main outs into the inputs of my (much) better interface with gain matching etc. and was shocked at just how low noise that thing actually was (although the headphone out circuit is quite hissy).
    Thankfully the higher up interfaces don't seem to have these problems with their converters but I'd be inclined to stay away from anything that Behringer sells that isn't stated to be 24 bit (actual 16 bit would be more than fine, but what you're getting here is more like 12 bit).
    EDIT: I've been looking a lot at converters these last few days and hadn't noticed you'd pointed them out here. The Cool Audio V2902 must be the same as the Texas Instruments PCM2902 chips under a different brand, they both have a stated SNR of 89 dB (that would be A weighted). Maybe a little better than what must be the PCM2900 used in the Xenyx I have. Nonetheless it's still nowhere close to the unweighted 96 dB (peak to RMS noise floor) and the noise is close enough that of the preamps at max gain that it has an additive effect and raises degrade the EIN. Now that I've got to the bottom of this I'll stop nerding out and get on with life.

    Both still pretty cheap but is the extra 16€ worth it.

    • @devnull1013
      @devnull1013 4 года назад

      Depends on the use case, but likely yes. The UMC202HD comes with a dedicated ASIO driver, so latency roundtrip times will be much better. There are 2 XLR/jack combo ports, so you could record two mics or 2 instruments at the same time if needed. The HD can also record 192KHz/24-bit resolution, and seems to have a much bigger dynamic range.

    • @JulianKrause
      @JulianKrause  5 лет назад

      Schwer zu sagen, wo genau das herkommt. Aber alleine das unterschiedliche Board Layout könnte schon dazu beitragen, dass irgendwo Störsignale in den Audiopfad gelangen. Habe auch schon bei anderen Geräten gesehen, dass die Spannungswandler für die Phantomspeisung solche Effekte entstehen lassen. Solange da im FFT nur eine Mini-Spitze zu sehen ist, ist das normalerweise auch kein Problem. Beim UM2 war die Phantomspeisung aber aus und es übertreibt trotzem ein bisschen ;)
