The only guy who had the balls to endure Kinski's madness, and he still managed to create a masterpiece in the end. Herzog is really one in a billion.

Whenever my cat talks to me I imagine that she is talking with Herzog´s voice, evaluating me and the world around us. "this huge deformed human strides through his small apartement as if he has decided to become a display of mockery towards life itself......but why?"

OMG could you imagine hom playing Hegel and then Christopher Walken playing Marx Describing Hegel and his influence. And then Jacquim Pheonix playing Nietzsche in someway for good measure.
Didn't know about Herzog until I saw Jack Reacher. When Herzog explained how he chewed off his thumbs in prison, it immediately gave me a natural ominous sense about his overall presence on screen. I knew just after seeing that movie and the little screen time he had, I needed to do some research about Herzog. I saw Grizzly Man and was in total awe of Herzog's observation of Treadwell's life. Herzog is a living legend in my opinion.

Genius and Insanity. Werner Herzog is an amazing artist. As a Bavarian boy I might find myself one day committed to my dream of filmmaking and Herzog might function as a role model.

Not only do I love Herzog, I also have a GIF at hand of his "Happy New Year, you're all losers!" from his Master Class. And how about that scene in "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" where he puts the lens on the albino crocodiles, wondering what they dream about?
Herzog is my favorite director, not for his films but for who he is!
And owls are not what they seem...
I will never forget him, talking about the craft of filmmaking, saying "Storyboarding? Storyboarding is for cowards!" in his masterclass class. It is so expensive but if you can somehow get your hands on it, it's fantastic. I understood that his main goal was filming reality. Whether that reality is manipulated into fitting the narrative of a story, the scene still happened. You can't escape that. What you film happens.

I think Herzog's theme of the impossible struggle is about the struggle within ourselves. We do our best do be good people, but it's an impossible struggle against our baser nature. We can never overcome our innate wickedness, but we can fight it with every ounce of will we have.
That's my take on it, at least
The makers of the Mandalorian made contact with Herzog and told him that they'd like to offer him a role in series that is an offshoot of Star Wars.
Herzog's reply? "What is Star Wars".
Only because in Germany they speak german, so he knew the title as Krieg der Sterne, (war of the stars) not because he didn't know what star wars was as you are implying

It isn't THAT unusual either. Neither of my parents know anything about Star Wars, or would have any reaction to the phrase beyond how it was used in the Reagan years. They live in New York - and live in the same sort of world as Herzog...classical music, opera, literature, never see popular films, wouldn't even recognize any names of such films..
I just found this, and am glad to have done so! Herzog has been my favorite director for decades - as R Ebert said; even his failures are spectacular. I think his curiosity is one of the reasons I find him so fascinating, and how far he's willing to go to satisfy that curiosity. This, beside the fact that his movies are unlike anything else, and are always interesting, beautiful, and stay with you long after watching. 'Burden of Dreams' is a terrific look into his film making process, and I found it, too, fascinating.
Give Les Blank the credit for Burden.
According to Wikipedia, Herzog was born in Munich (and his German enunciation makes this apparent) -- hardly what you'd consider a village, regardless of where you're from!

Als ich gehört habe, dass Herzog in einer abgelegenen Ortschaft gelebt haben soll ohne fließend wasser und TV hab ich mich erstmal gewundert. Abgelegen? In Deutschland? Das kann es wenn überhaupt nur in den Alpen geben ala Heidi und tatsächlich Herzog soll in Sachrang gelebt haben, eine Ortschaft in den Alpen.

Herzog is the reason why Grogu was practical effects instead of CGI. He said he was heartachingly beautiful as a puppet and the show would be cowards for switching it for CGI. He's also great in the Simpsons. Been a fan for many years

My mom, and I were watching a Werner Herzog's marathon, whose movies were Aguirre the wrath of God, Nosferatu, and Fitzcarraldo, starring Klaus Kinski who was his fettish actor, and although they made 5 movies together, they both were about to kill each other. Actually, Herzog is the only man who kept trying to murder Kinski.
Fettish? Uuuh. Also, saying he kept trying to do that is a wild exaggeration.
It was all rubbish, good for publicity.
Honestly, he should have killed him. Kinski was a true monster.

I'm really familiar with about 15 of his movies (including some wonderful documentaries). He has made so many. I envy those who followed him his whole career. He's terrific, and also the reason Grogu stayed a puppet.
Nice documentation. I really would have liked to see a short sequence were Kinski yells at Herzog, the indigenous people just sitting around, not knowing what's going on.
I think the part with the grizzly guy could have been a little shorter, but all together really well done.
I love the pause after "not listen to any music at all for several years" which is full of beautiful orchestral music

I think he set up the air rifle bit just to have something bizarre happen during the Mark Kermode interview! The only person mad enough to shoot at Hertzog in broad daylight while he is on camera with the BBC is Hertzog himself!

Herzogs movies and documentaries are quite special, unlike most other movies. Some are brilliant, but all I have seen have been at least memorable and worth a watch!

The Script of this video bears remarkable similarity to Like Stories of Old's video on Herzog, which came out 2 years before this one.
I advise anyone who has seen this to watch that one so they can verify it for themselves.
I love werner herzog love the scale and large scope and vision but sadly most of his films have suffered from lack of budget but his cinematography is unbelievable!

Herzog is a peculiar mixture of the German lack of knowing when to stop and the Balkan love of westerns (i.e. tall tales).
I just watched a pretty hilarious movie called “Freaks of Nature” and Werner had a special voice over at the end!
He was a really good person I believe maybe a little unstable but really good individual.Mad doesn’t mean bad

@18:30 ok up until here 😂. If we all literally were this persistent and singular of mind the human race would be over within a year. Because we have a diverse society and most people are humble we are able to support geniuses like Hertzog. Although in his case 99.9% of genius is bloody mindedness.

I really liked the video and subscribed. I don't know if it's my headphones but it always felt like your voice is behind the music not on top of it. What im trying to say is that the mixing of the different audio levels could be adjusted more towards favoring your voice instead of the music. Anyway I watched till the end without skipping the advertisement. Just my 2 cents;)

The scenes in Aguirre where Aguirre hovers around and touches his daughter are even more disturbing now that Kinski's history of sexually abusing his daughter are known.

Still, just glossing over the multiple deaths on the set of Fitzcarraldo by leading into a reverent summary of his life's accomplishments seems a bit... off. I understand it's a nicer bow to put on this narrative, but ultimately just perpetuates the "insane genius"-myth that we really need to burry.

I can relate to that. I am the kind of person who chooses to not look at things that are too painful.
On the other hand, I think it would be dishonest of Herzog not to do it. The whole film is about him trying to penetrate into the mind of this strange eccentric man.
The grizzly man was obsessed with the bears, but he was just as obsessed with himself, and his relation to them, more than anything, he was obsessed with sculpting his own image, curating his own story.
Grizzly man really, really pushed his luck, and it almost seemed as if he he wanted to be consumed by the bears.
It was a man whose whole being was screaming "witness me!"
I think Herzhog wasn't going to stop at anything. He's that kind of artist. I do not think he listened to the tape as an act of morbid curiosity (as many others would) I think he felt deep empathy for the grizzly man and like he owned it to him. To see it all through. Not look away at the last moment and say "that's enough" for the sake of good taste.
I think one of the amazing things with Werner Herzog is that he dares to stare into what is obvious insanity, not to distance himself from it, not to shy away from it, but to align himself with his protagonist and fall into that abyss with them.
It is a very rare thing that he does.
