I don't think you can ruin a sketchbook.. everything in it is precious, may it be the ugliest thing created by mankind.. it's a sketchbook.. you should sketch in it without feeling pressured to become Picasso all out of sudden ❤️
I suggest a smaller sized sketchbook as well! You won’t be so intimidated by that big blank page. Smaller pages will make it look like you filled the whole page too!!
I don’t know why but I actually have no problems starting or filling sketchbooks😂 I take mine everywhere I go and it only takes me a few months to finish, and for some reason I don’t care if they get ruined, all my finished sketchbooks are ripped and broken and have stickers all over them haha I’m weird ❤️

Love your doodles! I used the have the worse anxiety about my sketchbooks. Until I bought a cheaper one with spirals that I could easily rip out... I can’t say it’s fancy but it’s so cool to look through! At the end of the day, when I inevitably leave this earth, my friends and family will cherish all the little paintings I did. They won’t care about the pretty supplies I leave behind. One of my HS friends lost her husband in a accident recently. Stuff like that puts things into perspective. If someone sees a bad sketch or ugly painting I did, that’s the least of my problems. 😆 that’s some late 20’s wisdom for you there.
Oh and I have so many sketchbooks! I bought one that I felt was so precious that I bought one to literally abuse as much as I can (it was the goal I put up to try to make it as ugly as possible but still serious attempts. But it can be rained on outside, can try new supplies, do exercises etc) then use precious for like clean versions of ideas! And my black sketchbook will be my first bullet journal with white pretty pen, and a tan sketchbook for when I am in the mood for colored pencils. Now I just added watercolor pencils to my collection and neither of my four sketchbooks take water well so I might need a fifth. 😂
I have different sketchbooks of different sizes, paper weights, even paper colors for different things then a catch-all sketchbook that I bring everywhere and write down anything that comes to mind. I even use it during classing in school and while I'm at work. I find that having a purpose for a sketchbook helps me get over the fear of ruining it. I just have to stop loosing them.

I like to paint different patterns with watercolor and then drawing on top of it, it's very helpful because to me adding color to your pages makes it so much easier and less intimidating to draw
Hello from the English Insomniac. Now this is the video I have been waiting for. I bought a sketchbook a few months ago, but since I have the artistic ability of a monkey and the imagination of a goldfish, I have not yet plucked up the courage to make a start on that important first page. The plain ol' hardbound Pentalic sketchbooks that people in high school and art school use are good for beginners. The paper will take a lot of abuse and doesn't pill. Takes some wet media and is good with ink. Very reasonably priced. Get a stack of 'em! Be sure to look for the Pentalic brand name though, similar sketchbooks can have substandard paper and disappoint. One tip that might be helpful, if you use ink and it bleeds to the back, you can paint over the back with gesso to restore and make a clean page. I like the hardbound ones because I don't need to carry a support to use them out and about. They free you up because you don't feel so precious with them and they also take a lot of abuse.
"Don't loose this sketchbook" lol that's definitely a goal to accomplish! Anyway "draw your day" sounds pretty nice idea. I think I read it somewhere already but - of course - forgot about it again (probably in some bullet journal themed thing) so thanks for reminding :).
I love these kinds of things. I don't really keep a sketchbook myself for I noticed take them out and put them on a folder. I love these tips and for me I acutally love drawing detailed full portrait drawings.. I love your videos. Very relaxing and informative. Thank you 😊😊

The “buy a cheap sketchbook” one works. I got my current sketchbook at Walmart for 5 dollars. If ur wondering it’s the smallest version of the canson mix media sketchbook. It’s really good, it has thick pages and a good amount of pages, so I recommend it if you don’t wanna go out to hobby lobby and buy a $20 strathmore or something.

Thanks this video is perfect for me. I got a new sketchbook for christmas 2018. I drew in it on Jan 2nd that was the first mark ever made in this sketchbook.
When i draw in my sketchbook, and i want to fill up a page i would tell myself to be creative and do what first comes to mind, “use different medias in one” “use charcoal” “go crazy all over the page with different colors” literally anything. And sometimes ill think that it might come out bad, but even if it does ill look back to that drawing and ill think about how fun it was to let my creativity get the best of me.
My art journey is just beginning. I did some hand lettering on the cover with posca pens and slapped cute stickers on the cover. It helps me to realize its a book to play in.

If you’re stuck on what to draw then maybe draw an OC based on a song. I just did this (at 3AM) and I love the drawing soo much. The song I based my character off of was Smoke and Mirriors. It’s a song about killing a girl that likes your crush and your crush likes them so you kill her so you can be with your crush. It’s hard to explain but I just did a Yandere girl. Since they’re technically Japanese I find it useful to look up Japanese names to name your OC

The Rose Endeavor I struggle with that too! I just have random pages that I wrote about my day in, and others I just sketched my mood/whatever came to mind. It’s a lot less pressure to write everyday.

Super great tips! You write and paint so pretty! But hey as a fellow leftie, try to re-train yourself to not push on your thumb, you could create a strain or wear and tear in the joint that could cause early pain and even arthritis and that would be such a devastating thing. So try to practice holding a more joint friendly way.
