- Steve Smith is having fun playing this 1930s Slingerland kit in the style of the drumming forefathers: 4/4 pulse on the BD, press rolls on the snare, melodies on the temple blocks and some swing time on the Hi-Hats. From the Northup Drum Collection, a drum museum open to the public in Oneonta, NY with drums and drum accessories from 1900-1970! www.northupdrums.com
Refreshing. This playing isn't heard much anymore.
I wonder why? 😂😂
I completely agree 👍
percussion soundtrack to the old silent cartoons at the matinee.
Odd that hi-hats were only 10 years old in the 30’s.
A lot of nice character in this kit 👍
I was looking for some clarification on that, when they moved from the sock-hat to hi-hat. I've only seen a sock-hat used once or twice in a demo of early 20th century drum kits.
The warmth in those toms was surprising.
@@johangambleputty7658 Is a sock hat the same as a low boy?
I love Steve Smith’s playing. He’s so musical.
Who else is surprised by the utterly beautiful tone this kit produced?
Surprised, no. Was it beautiful? Hell yes.
Is it me, or is that kick drum absolutely massive?
They made some big boys back for the big band era 27” kinda thang 😅
According to the catalog it's a 14"x28" bass drum! Huge!
I’ve thought that the early kick drums were simply adapted marching bass drums. They were indeed wide and shallow.
A lot of those bass drums back then were actually marching band bass drums.
No, it is not just you, I think it is huge also. It reminds me of the kit Cab Calloway played and I think his bass was 26" or so.
You are transported to the smoky cafe in the 30's...magical!
So cool! I love that Steve played the kit as it would have been played when it was new. Awesome!
Steve, you’re pure class. A credit to the drumming community. Thanks for sharing!
That was way more than a beat.....that was music!!
Smitty you can do NO WRONG BROTHER!!
I LOVE how you’ve played the 30s drumming style to a TEE!
The greatest all around drummer on the planet HANDS DOWN!
Talk about old school. This is great. Kits have come a long way..
I love the sound of these now old kits. They seem a lot more fun than the standard modern kit.
Steve Smith is a legend.
I really enjoyed hearing temple blocks along with the drum set!! Very interesting combination.
Steve! This is awesome! You've nailed that old 30s style on that kit! Gene Krupa would be proud! ❤ 👍🏾
Such a warm sound from these old drums. Really dig it.
They used to call them “ trap sets”, slang for “ contraptions “. Pretty awesome vintage kit, and kudos to Steve Smith!
The toms to me are so interesting. Toms now are so different! I want a kit like this so bad!!
Piece one together. Start with finding a good kick and snare.
That snare sounds absolutely massive !
We didn't get to witness Chick Webb, Sonny Greer or Ben Pollack. So thank you, Steve Smith for giving us a way to actually see how it was done in the beginning. I find this videos highly illuminating.
Steve has the most fluid and beautiful hand movement of any drummer I have ever seen!!! Thanks to Freddy!!
⚘🌷Thanks for sharing the jazz!!:)🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌷⚘
Steve smith is absolutely one of the best percussionist in the business ever. Absolutely incredible musician
Brilliant, drums and percussion 🎼.
Love to hear AND see that magnificent old kit played beautifully. You can almost hear the jazz combo or orchestra tooting away!
Awesome contraptions. I'm surprised how modern or contemporary those " toms" sound
Same here the toms blew me away
@@waltzguy14151me too! Was very pleasantly surprised

Happened to catch Steve 20 ish years ago in Summerville Mass at Johnny D,s.
My God was Vital Information and their opener(their name escapes me, mostly because I renamed the "A Hard Act To Follow" in my brain) astounding.
The whole night flipped my wig back.
Went back to this and loved it on 2nd listen - my last comment was from a place of pandemic darkness - keep that creativity and adventurousness going forever Steve!
+Steve Smith, Keep Up The Awesome Work
Very Cool Steve..🥁😎🥁..
The opening Drum solo of your Dvd history of the Us beat is simply one of the most beautiful/musical drum solos since the inception of drums!
Steve can sound authentic in any drumming era - love it
GO, +Steve Smith, GO !
What a remarkable and rare glimpse into history - in real time! I could HEAR the band playing!
Wow. Just so amazing to watch thank you. I had an old leedy kit back in the day. 28" bass drum. It was so nice. Wish I still had it.
Great interpretation of the style of music to fit that vintage kit.
All that and great posture . Very important . No slouching .
Just beautiful Steve! I could listen to this for hours! Wonderful kit that sounds so nice! Thanks Steve and I miss you playing with Journey! May the Lord Bless you and your family!🙏
That was fckn awesome. Those toms sound amazing and now I get why the attack sound on toms from those days sounded so muted and you got more the sound of the drum itself than the stick hitting it. Just awesome Steve Smith is always tasty tasty tasty
Hes got this incredible finesse. Bless him cuz id be too afraid of breaking that damn thing.
Couldn't find a more proper drummer to play this authentic drum kit, then the great Steve Smith.
🤘🏼❤🥁❤
I can just picture that big kick drum filling the Savoy Ballroom dance floor with a booming 4-on-the-floor rumble. Great demo.
i dont know how to describe it, but it just sounds like the 30's? so cool.
Few could have done this kit honor like this.
Beautiful tone. And that kick drum looks Large! Wow!
Love love love!
Waw.. amazing drumming,🥁🙏🇮🇩
This is great man, I've never really see anybody actually use these kits let alone use the toms.
Dude look up for Sticky Wicket in the Next Level Chops channel, that old boy can make old kits like these sing.
Very authentic and musical...
So cool! I'm glad I found your channel!
That was very enjoyable.
Beautiful vintage sounds... thank you sir.

Always paying respect to this beautiful instruments origins.
This is beautiful.
Excellent!
Great display of the rhythms from that period!
That drum stool looks comfortable. But I can think of no one better to accurately represent the different drumming styles of the respective era of the drums in that room.
This is awesome!!
Don't those toms sound like gold… Loved it when Steve fanned the hats. Carrying the torch.
Steve is Awesome and he swings too ! 🥁
Great sound.

Sounds 2nd lineish....love it.
Those toms sound fab!
