  • In this video I'm painting a Tyranid from the new Warhammer 40,000 Introductory Starter Set. I use just the colours from the set, and the included starter brush. No airbrush, no wet pallet! This guide is ideal for painting your first mini, or for more experienced painters looking for new ways to paint with limited colours. I will show you everything from undercoating with a brush, through to shading and adding highlights.
    Using this simple guide, you will quickly be able to paint up any Warhammer miniatures ready for the table top. Subscribe to Drunk On Tea for regular painting guides for Warhammer 40K, Age of Sigmar and Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game

    I really love that you show a proper base coat. I’m sick of the myth that you have to ‘prime’ a model

    • @DrunkOnTeaUK
      @DrunkOnTeaUK  3 месяца назад +1

      I hate that myth as well. Rattle cans are quick and easy, but if someone is starting out or is only painting a single model, then a good solid base coat is all you need. It's just a layer, so the other paints have something to "stick" to rather than just plastic.

    • @DrunkOnTeaUK
      @DrunkOnTeaUK  3 месяца назад

      Thank you! With a little practice and some patience, you should be able to paint models you are happy with pretty quickly. The only thing I would say to get is a cheap pack of brushes from amazon or your local hobby store. It's good to have a few different sizes around, but with cheap ones, when they get ruined or too hooked, you can just throw them away and get some new ones.
      Welcome to the hobby, and have fun painting the Underworlds models, they are some really nice looking minis.

      Thank you! Welcome to the hobby! Hopefully, you enjoy painting painting your first minis! There are quite a lot of videos out there that use a lot of advanced techniques and equipment ( the number of videos that will tell you that you "need" an airbrush or wet pallette is crazy), but its possible to achieve good results with just practice, a few paints and basic equipment.
      Please let me know how you get on with painting your first models!

    This was a fantastic tutorial! Definitely need to practice my brush control to get the edge highlighting right (and on my patience to spend more time tidying up next time), but your technique for the makeshift shade definitely helped make up for my lack of experience/skill!

    • @DrunkOnTeaUK
      @DrunkOnTeaUK  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you!
      Practice really is the key. You'll quickly pick up muscle memory with a brush, and the edge highlights become a lot easier and more even.
      Shades (even makeshift ones) really do make painting so much easier. There is a reason people call nuln oil "talent in a bottle"

    Since I didn't buy a Spray Can to prime my mini (I didn't see a point in spending £15 just for a single model since I don't even know if I'll be painting more) I decided to follow yours and the GW guide on on basing with a brush. Followed both videos making sure to water down the paint, got 5 minutes into priming it, hated it so washed off the paint and I've given up trying to paint miniatures

    • @DrunkOnTeaUK
      @DrunkOnTeaUK  10 месяцев назад

      I'm sorry to hear that! Priming is the worst part of painting miniatures. I completely get why you wouldn't want to get a can of primer if you are new to the hobby. Once the undercoat is down, the rest of the process is a lot more enjoyable. Hopefully, one day you'll decide to give it another go.

    • @DrunkOnTeaUK
      @DrunkOnTeaUK  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! I haven't done Hive Fleet Kraken yet. You would need to add a red to the colours in the starter set for Kraken. Pretty much swap out the purple for red on all the carapace, and it will be pretty close to Kraken. I have been doing a series where I paint different models with only 5 paints, I've done Space Marines, eventually I'll get around to painting all the Hive Fleets with just 5 paints as well.

    • @DrunkOnTeaUK
      @DrunkOnTeaUK  7 месяцев назад

      I've made a video for how to paint the Space Marines using the same starter set paints. With most of the models being very similar, you can easily copy the colours for skin and carapace (or power armour) over to every model in the box. But it wouldn't recommend trying to paint them all like this, you'll slowly go insane mixing colours for every model and it will take forever. I have a video on how to paint Tyrandis using a few more paints, that can easily be copied across all the models in Leviathan and would save you a lot of time and effort mixing highlight and shade colours.

    • @DrunkOnTeaUK
      @DrunkOnTeaUK  9 месяцев назад +1

      There isn't a primer in the starter set. Normally, I would recommend priming in white, but if you don't have any primer, you can just brush on a base paint, it just needs to fully dry before layers.
      In this one I'm using a "pallette pad" by Games Workshop, its just sheets of gloss coated paper that you can use to thin and mix paints, but anything that's flat and non absorbant will work
