It is so wonderful to see and hear Tom talk about his history, our country’s history, music, politics, and especially his family. I had the great pleasure of living with Tom and the girl who eventually became his wife. Sadly I haven’t seen Tom or Sweet D in far too long, but listening to him talk brings me back to that wonderful time so long ago. Tom continues to inspire me all these years later and makes me so proud to have been a small part of his life. I send my love and eternal admiration to Tom and Denise and their beautiful family. I am looking forward to seeing Rage play when they are back out on the road (assuming they stop in Denver, my most recent new home). Fantastic interview! Thanks so much for publishing it.

Our heroes will never be perfect, no matter how much we want them to be or how we make them look in our wet dreams. "The original fire has died and gone, but the riot inside move on." They die or we see their imperfections, their messages and meanings are what live forever. Sincerely, a Church lector who would have literally killed himself if not for the lyrics of a band with a cross amidst a no-smoking sign.
Oh and all of those I mentioned including the band Bad Religion, whose Stranger Than Fiction album saved my life one night, are all over 50 and Bill would be nearing 60 if alive today.
This is my first time seeing this interviewer, and having worked in journalism for 10+ years myself, I can confidently say that he did an excellent job in guiding this conversation.

1992 Lollapalooza, I didn't even know who Rage was! lol, and we're in the front getting crushed, security lifts us over and we get stopped by security "THE BAND WANTS TO MEET YOU GUYS!!!" long story short, for ten minutes, Zach and the boys just wanted to know if we were ok, let us cool down on a damn hot day, and even fed us from their rider, and now I am fan for life.

His mother was a great teacher at LHS...i recall her talking about apartheid and Biko - i'm sure she opened a few student's minds in that town

Love Tom Morello. He's so f'n awesome, smart and f'n badass. I love that he grew up with Adam Jones from Tool. Two amazing, gifted guitarists who ended up in 2 of the most incredible bands of the 90s.
Sucks that RATM will always be relevant and the struggle never ends. Thanks for the sound track to the resistance of abusive power.

Great interview. I'm a 58 year old fairly new to being a musician. Our band always closes our shows with Killing in the Name. It's fun to play, apparently fun to listen to, and I think it is such an important message. I feel like it hit the scene when America thought it was dealing with the problem of racism. But now we see, in the Trump era, that nothing was dealt with, and the music from the past, turns out to be the music from the future.
Hell yeah, so glad Morello proves a proud black man who is intelligent, loves to rock the f*** out, speaks well and holds family dear! I'm sick as hell of stereotypes. Then again RATM has always been about breaking stereotypes.
What an incredibly articulate, avant-garde musician. Been a rage/Tom fan since my intro back in the day at ‘92 Lollapalooza in Nashville.

I may not see the world and politics the way he does, but this doesn't change the respect I have for him as an artist. Him saying that he started playing guitar late at 17 is inspiring.
I agree. I really respect a passionate guy, that is going his own way in life, and that has stayed away from the self-destructive side of the business. He's a great, great guitar player and seems like a decent guy.

Rage needs a live stream concert during these troubling times. That and my chance to see them went away this summer.
No lie. As a person of mixed race its almost relieving to hear the things he went through revolving around his race are the same as mine. Make no mistake that being someone who is mixed of race is almost worse than being someone who has one race. We have no one homeland we can go back to, no set sub culture to fall back on in the social environment when growing up. When growing up as someone whos mixed of race with one of those races being Caucasian, you come to find that the people and culture of the half that isn't white is much more inviting and accepting of your color and upbringing. I thankfully grew up being close to the black side of my family, but just knowing that Tom didn't have that some connection but was able to build that connection just based off the hate he received for being mixed is what's relieving to me. Nothing but respect and love for him.

I love this interview. As someone that was born in 76, watching the world hurtle towards the future into the 90s I felt like we were doing so much..... Then to hear Public Enemy, RATM, and now RTJ, I feel even more anger and distrust. My saving grace is that I have raised six children (mine and hers before you guys get bent out of shape) to push back, and not accept bullshit non-answers to real problems. We need MANY more to speak out against this wanna be dictator in D.C. Let's end him in November!

I love RATM (I had tickets to see them this month!). First time I heard their music back in '92 it immediately resonated with me - I wore out that cassette of the first record (that's right I said CASSETTE!). I'll be honest I didn't delve into subject matter of their lyrics too deeply at that time, it wasn't until later that I understood. I don't see eye to eye on everything Tom stands for politically but I do understand the reasons why we're going through what we're going though at this point and time in the country's history. But I do know this -- Tom is one of the last, great rock guitar hero's. I have an immense amount of respect for him as a musician, songwriter and performer. Really nice interview,...I bit too much politics but, thanks.

So grateful to have seen Rage Against The Machine during their last rare reunion tour in 2008 during the presidential republic convention in St. Paul while the show was in target center in mpls MN and there were seat guard around the venue because they thought people were going to riot after the show but Zack and Tom wisely said to not act violent toward them as it only plays into their cards and the best thing we should do is vote and speak our voices and use artistic expression and to even vote with our money and not get suckered into their system of fear.
Best show of my life! They were so tight and on point that night playing wise. The riot teams surrounding the Target Center!

He's an interesting person whose limited edition book is clocking in around 385.00 U.S. Dollars. Unsigned and regular edition is priced for the working class. Hopefully he will have some signed copies available of the regular hardback for his fans.
What a great interview with a great guy. Tom is by far one of my favourite guitar players and he's a great person. It was quite interesting to hear that he grew up with Adam Jones. The creative vibes must've been amazing! Keep on rockin', Tom!
I've met TM many times as we have a very mutual loving trusted friend we both rely on.. behind the scenes he's so down to earth and kind. He's also funny as hell and full of fun. We don't always agree on what should be done or even what the issues are but he's a person I learn from because he speaks from fact. Tom is really an educator. A teacher. He doesn't really come off as someone who wants to tear it all down rather more of a peacemaker calling for more integrity in well, everything (just my opinion) as he has thrived in a capitalist society to enormous personal wealth. He also loves his mom and kids so much. Treats everyone w respect, like everyone. Seen it many times. Good dude, period. I'm not going to watch the interview because its RS and they have one agenda, and one agenda ain't cool and it's boring. Get TM on Joe Rogan, please. My one issues is - I honestly think the MACHINE is Facebook, Amazon, and Google now and I'm surprised TM doesn't yell about tech more - rather embraces it - love to see more focus on that but that's not really his deal, Tech is the Machine now and that can't be debated.TM music lives on AudioSlave, Rage, Nightwatch yada yada - everyone stop arguing - don't you see you're being played?

I like what you're saying but it's kind of a contradiction in terms.
Nico Capannelli Laid back, for me, means a non-rushed deep implied pocket preferential to 2 and 4. The metal funk component includes the guitar riffs with effects that are well balanced in the ensemble sound. Of course rap vocals feed into the sound without losing the deep pockets and create the needed anger. I’m partial to Rage Against the Machine. Does that help?

This is why Rogan is a better interviewer. This guy wants Tom to say certain things. Morello is smart enough to choose his words wisely and formulate intelligent, wide reaching message. Why is this important? Because it crosses the divide and people from both sides will listen.
