in my opinion this is the best possible interpretation of a portable console, clamshell-shaped. It combines portability with a large screen, you can house excellent hardware and an excellent battery because the space available is very good, the screen and controls are protected when the console is closed, it slips well into the pockets and the rectangular shape and compact size increase its portability. In the future, the retroid, if it will be successful and I hope so, will have to think about further reducing the thickness.
Nah they screwed this up, apparently the r1 and r2 are not easy to access because the screen is in the way, there was enough space on the face of the unit for the speakers but the left SO much blank space and stuck the speakers under facing away from the user, shipped with Android 11 when the Anbernic rg405m shipped with 12, and using sliders vs real analog sticks was a huge mistake as they could have fit them given this thing is already way way too thick. Combine all that with cheap plastics and a noisy fan and this isn't appealing in the slightest. RP3+ is vastly superior even though its D-Pad is garbage, and the rg405m is about perfect especially with its 4:3 screen and native gamecube / PS2 screen resolution.
@@TeamGun I have no doubts about what you are saying, it is not absolutely perfect and can be improved a lot, the anbernics are qualitatively another world, I just hope that anbernic produces a flip model similar to the retroid but with its proverbial build quality because for me the clamshell console are fabulous when they are well designed !!

clamshell design is great, but any moving part introduces durability concerns down the road. I would be interested to see how easy it is to repair the hinge. The example that comes to mind is the 3DS - usually wears out significantly over just a few years, and is pretty challenging to replace for the typical user. Also, Retroid seems to be in a pattern of releasing a miniscule performance upgrade, followed by a big one. Kinda wish they would just hold off until they have a new chipset in their handheld. Nearly 2 years later and I STILL LUV my Powkiddy V90. I play it more than my OG RG350. They COULD have included actual analogue sticks with R3 and L3 had they just done what Anbernic does, have a square cut out in the motherboard and screw holes for the analogue sticks, that is an additional reason I will not be purchasing the Flip. ALL that room and they couldn't include an ABC, XYZ face button configuration (closes eyes, raises chin, folds arms and shakes head back and forth in disappointment) Great Review! Excited to get mine! Thanks for getting this out quickly. I've been looking for feedback on the sliders and from what I'm seeing they're very similar to the 3DS which means I'll be fine. I'm curious to see which I prefer, this or the 405m.

I love clamshell devices! Even though I have an RP2+ I usually have my powkiddy v90 in my pocket just cause its so resilient when im on the go. Just ordered the flip today and excited to be using that as my daily driver soon.
I kinda wish there was a tiny little screen in that empty space on the bottom half. It could show diagnostics or play music, and would fix a lot of the emulation issues with DS/3DS
Clamshell is the best design for smaller handhelds, because it is absolutely pocketable and portable. I wish it had better hardware though. The T760 would have been much better, or something with a mali G610.
Better then I thought that it would be but that SOC just looks like a very temporary stopgap, so would expect to see a superseded model with something like an RK3588S soon.
Nice looking design and great video. I already have the RP3+ so I don't have an incentive now to get this, but the active cooling of this one is definitely going to make my long gaming sessions more fun in the long run.
I'm curious as to how well this would be as a portable video game system when plugged into a TV. Of course can play using the screen, but I would like to see it hooked up to a TV and some controllers connected. Not the best to try and lug many of the game consoles around but if I could play this on the go and at home would be cool.
Patience pays, that's why I think I'll wait for the next upgrade since it's a clamshell design and being able to play 3DS titles would be perfect. My suggestion would be a small screen in the middle between the controls if feasible. Other than that it's nearly the perfect clamshell handheld.
I think we all wish for something like a flip duo to play ds/3ds games but they are not a android / phone company. To make the software for an android device with two screens is not that easy, I think. The only phone with two real screens that I know is the Surface duo. Maybe they can make a Linux device with two screens
@@wordsmith451 Yeah, I agree. Besides, such devices will never offer the smooth experience that actual 3DS offers. That's why I got mine N3ds XL for a decent price.
@Веско Динев the 3DS can play DS, and below games. When I'm going to spend a similar amount of money I'd rather have something that can do more and lot of cheaper (in this case). Plus in my head I get to take a dump at nintendo for emulating games.
That built in mapper, just love those kinds of extra functionalities..... But for a nearsighted person like me, the display at 4.7" seems a bit small for me.....
They should have utilized the extra face room for a 6-button setup for N64/Genesis/Saturn/Arcade. And the fact that the Start and Select buttons are on the bottom instead of in the middle like a SNES controller, when there's all that wasted space in the middle is insane.
I'm getting the pocket flip over the 3+ because the select and start button are in good spots, the pad placements are more comfortable, and i loved my 3ds so I'll get this just experience that again.
Really want one but I'm going to wait for the plus version that's sure to come soon. I also don't really like the joystick placement, I'd personally prefer them at the top. I do appreciate this video showing it off.
Great video, thanks! I ordered my watermelon even while the ltd red edition was still available and have no regrets (other than how long I'm having to wait for it to reach me!)
I just wish they would have gone with the 3ds design with a bottom screen. We already have a few clamshell's from different companies but none of them have really experimented with that design
It looks great, I love the design, but I have a few reasons for not wanting to get this. I have a Retroid Pocket 2+ which plays all that I want to play accurately, since Gamecube/PS2 is a no go. And to get to those, I have a Steam Deck. But I love the look, and if I didn't have the RP 2+ I'd definitely be investing in one of these.
When you're done with your full review, send the device to the hydraulic press channel. Inquiring minds need to know how much pressure it will take to break that hinge!
Love the detail. I could have just listened to this instead of watching, in a good way. Only suggestion I got is a decibel meter and throw something common beside it, like a steam deck, for comparison
Plus I already have a AYN Odin, I'm on base version instead of Pro while Most of them have a Pro, so I'll be sticking with AYN Odin for this one. This device is actually the same machine as AYN Odin Pro.
my problem with this is that the hinge is so ugly looking its like they designed the whole unit and then at the end realized they forgot the hinge so they added it as an afterthought also that type of clear plastic reminds of the cheap clear plastics used in the 90s hard pass for me which really sucks because i was really excited about this
I don't know why people keep saying that Call of Duty Mobile is not controller supported, yes it is I have played it with a controller multiple times before.
Nice, but I have long fingers and the smaller design hurts my hands/fingers. If they would incorporate the hall effect joysticks, active cooling and the analogs trigger to the Retroid Pocket 3+ it would be the perfect design for me. Of course, they'd have to not carry over the rocker type sticks.
Thanks ETA, great review. I love that thing, it looks great. I have an rp3+ but dat clamshell. I wonder about the analog sticks, buttons, and dpad leaving residue and friction rub on the screen when folded (a la OG 3DS). Is the screen recessed in the top lid enough to circumvent this? Thanks again for the review!
Cool. I hope they will ship mine faster than they shipped my rp3+. Took like 2 months. I preordered my watermelon the first day pre order was available
Honestly I hope we get a pocket flip plus or a more powerful one this year One that could run GameCube and ps2 better would be amazing with this compact design
To be honest, I think the best way to play DS and 3DS games is with their actual consoles. If you're going to buy a handheld just to run these Dual Screen games, might as well just buy a used 3DS or something.
Since the release of the retorid pocket 2, I have loved your series of consoles, they are my favorites, although I don't have any, they are certainly excellent for emulation.

So, Logitech G Cloud has the lack of performance while AYN Odin Pro has the amazing performance, but Logitech G Cloud is the strongest machine as well as AYN Odin Pro is.
AYN Odin Pro is the strongest machine.
I don't know about Pimax Portal, but Pimax Portal is yet another Next-Gen Android Handheld alongside with AYN Odin Pro and Logitech G Cloud being similar and AYANEO Pocket Air is coming too.
Pimax Portal and AYANEO Pocket Air are both coming, although... Razer Edge is a easy fit.
I have to test out Android Games on AYN Odin, GPD XP and Logitech G Cloud and see that it doesn't really have issues playing it on AYN Odin Pro, GPD XP Plus or even Logitech G Cloud. So I have to remind myself that it won't do any laggy for an Android Handheld with AYN Odin Pro, GPD XP Plus, Logitech G Cloud, Pimax Portal and/or even AYANEO Pocket Air.
Also, I know you told me that I am wrong about everything I said, so... My thoughts aren't true. So, my other thought that I said isn't even true either. So, tell me that I'm wrong.
I never would have thought that the handheld market would be ramping up. Very exciting times
Dang ETA I cant believe you already got yours. I preordered at midnight when they first dropped and I still haven’t received it.
Loved it, ordered the same color, can't wait to get a hand on
This makes me really really want a high powered dual screen android handheld
This thing looks like a beast.
Looks like beast, performs like a field mouse.
ALL that room and they couldn't include an ABC, XYZ face button configuration (closes eyes, raises chin, folds arms and shakes head back and forth in disappointment)
Great Review! It's a great device, sure, but no hardware upgrades really, I'm looking forward to the RP4+, the + will give a NICE performance boost over the upcoming RP4. =D
There wouldn't be space for the right analog stick man
@@navjotsandhu7245 Right, RIGHT! Because clearly... (flourishes hands over device) There's NO space AT ALL. When you look at the device... do you see ANY room for even a single extra button... let alone 2 additional buttons? I sure don't! The device is COMPLETELY filled up with stuff and things. I don't even know HOW they managed, outside of witchcraft, to CRAM ALL those buttons, TWO analogue sticks or EVEN a directional pad in such an insignificantly TINY TINY place..... man. =P
@@navjotsandhu7245 BTW, nice brand new channel with NO content created strictly for trolling LOL =P
Great video. Many thanks from France. In your next one about this machine, it would be great to compare it with the old gpd xd and see how this machine works if you dock it.
I wish there was a 6 button handheld layout. So much easier for fighting games and N64
I remember getting the Retroid Pocket 2 and absolutely hating the d-pad and the analog sticks. The USB-C port also wouldn't charge from a Turbo charger.
Waiting for mine ❤ Great Video Eta.
Excited to get mine! Thanks for getting this out quickly. I've been looking for feedback on the sliders and from what I'm seeing they're very similar to the 3DS which means I'll be fine. I'm curious to see which I prefer, this or the 405m.
rg405m is much better. They screwed this up, apparently the r1 and r2 are not easy to access because the screen is in the way, there was enough space on the face of the unit for the speakers but the left SO much blank space and stuck the speakers under facing away from the user, shipped with Android 11 when the Anbernic rg405m shipped with 12, and using sliders vs real analog sticks was a huge mistake as they could have fit them given this thing is already way way too thick. Combine all that with cheap plastics and a noisy fan and this isn't appealing in the slightest. RP3+ is vastly superior even though its D-Pad is garbage, and the rg405m is about perfect especially with its 4:3 screen and native gamecube / PS2 screen resolution.
Great video. Can't wait to get mine.
I'm curious as to how well this would be as a portable video game system when plugged into a TV. Of course can play using the screen, but I would like to see it hooked up to a TV and some controllers connected. Not the best to try and lug many of the game consoles around but if I could play this on the go and at home would be cool.
This is really nice, I'm considering picking one up next week now lol.
Patience pays, that's why I think I'll wait for the next upgrade since it's a clamshell design and being able to play 3DS titles would be perfect. My suggestion would be a small screen in the middle between the controls if feasible. Other than that it's nearly the perfect clamshell handheld.
I completely agree. Here's hoping a Flip Duo comes out with much beefier hardware.
I think we all wish for something like a flip duo to play ds/3ds games but they are not a android / phone company. To make the software for an android device with two screens is not that easy, I think. The only phone with two real screens that I know is the Surface duo.
Maybe they can make a Linux device with two screens
It's not feasible. Buy a 3DS. It's not going to happen. You'll spend the same on a 3DS. Buy a 3DS. BUY A 3DS.
Man, slightly better PS2 performance and I'd be all over it
That built in mapper, just love those kinds of extra functionalities..... But for a nearsighted person like me, the display at 4.7" seems a bit small for me.....
Frick Samsung z flip, me and the Bois gonna have fun on the retroid pocket flip 😎
Almost good enough specs wise. If you could run GC and PS2 without compromises at full speed then it'd be solid.
Which handheld can run gc and ps2/3??? Let me know thx
@@bob_WRLD Steam Deck
Just preorders can’t wait
They should have utilized the extra face room for a 6-button setup for N64/Genesis/Saturn/Arcade.
And the fact that the Start and Select buttons are on the bottom instead of in the middle like a SNES controller, when there's all that wasted space in the middle is insane.
it’s a crime there isn’t a handheld PC with this exact design (except the triggers, don’t look like they’d be comfortable in your pocket)
I'm getting the pocket flip over the 3+ because the select and start button are in good spots, the pad placements are more comfortable, and i loved my 3ds so I'll get this just experience that again.
This design is so cool!
I really love clamshell portables.
I would love an X86 portable like that.
I had really bad experience with hinges on translucent plastic before, hopefully the plastic quality on this will be better.
Cool Idea, wish it had a second screen
We really need an emulation device specially designed to support ds style games
nice channel! nice reviews! greetings from Mexico!
pd: can you do a video about Xemu on Handhelds? I’ve never see it before
I just wish they would have gone with the 3ds design with a bottom screen. We already have a few clamshell's from different companies but none of them have really experimented with that design
I’d love to see 3DS emulation if possible, playing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate would be super cool if possible
Yeah... there's a reason ETA showed DS and not 3DS.
5:50 is the ideal design for a dual-screen setup. I wish Retroid or someone would work on it. 😅
Can’t wait for mine! It hasn’t shipped yet. Team water melon
I really love the look of it
It looks great, I love the design, but I have a few reasons for not wanting to get this. I have a Retroid Pocket 2+ which plays all that I want to play accurately, since Gamecube/PS2 is a no go. And to get to those, I have a Steam Deck. But I love the look, and if I didn't have the RP 2+ I'd definitely be investing in one of these.
Hi! What about installing retro games? Like, ps1, ps2, gameboy, etc. Is it manual like on a regular phone, or are there pre-installed games?
I already have a AYN Odin, I've been waiting for the latest Android games to come out on the AYN Odin.
Man, I'd love this one, but I'll wait for the Flip+ to get reliable GC and PS2, the form factor is begging for these consoles
When you're done with your full review, send the device to the hydraulic press channel. Inquiring minds need to know how much pressure it will take to break that hinge!
WOW, you tried my favorite game, carx drift! i think i gotta this now!!!
Love the detail. I could have just listened to this instead of watching, in a good way. Only suggestion I got is a decibel meter and throw something common beside it, like a steam deck, for comparison
And then compare the titanic gaming performance of the Steam Deck to this little plastic toy.
That unisoc chip is like version of poor man's for android
Plus I already have a AYN Odin, I'm on base version instead of Pro while Most of them have a Pro, so I'll be sticking with AYN Odin for this one. This device is actually the same machine as AYN Odin Pro.
Looks cool. I already own a 3+ though. I would buy it if it had a spec bump, which knowing Retroid, that's going to happen in a few months.
my problem with this is that the hinge is so ugly looking
its like they designed the whole unit and then at the end realized they forgot the hinge
so they added it as an afterthought
also that type of clear plastic reminds of the cheap clear plastics used in the 90s hard pass for me
which really sucks because i was really excited about this
So those are slider style analog sticks not rocker style. Rocker style are the regular ones like on the switch.
luckyyyyy lol
im starting to think my sport red version that i ordered is just a dream
This thing is really nice I think I gotta get one
i wanna know how fast it charges from 0-100%. Also would have loved seeing some cloud gaming not that it's a deal breaker. Anyway, great video!
I am planning to use it mainly for cloud gaming! Unlikely PS2 emulation software is going to get to a point where GT4 runs will on this chip.
I also like the 2DS single piece form. It has potential for lots of io. This form also looks nice.
I don't know why people keep saying that Call of Duty Mobile is not controller supported, yes it is I have played it with a controller multiple times before.
Dang wish the watermelon was a darker red. Still the best looking color imo
they announced this product the week after I purchased a RP3+ and I honestly would love to have bought this instead. XD
Honestly I hope we get a pocket flip plus or a more powerful one this year
One that could run GameCube and ps2 better would be amazing with this compact design
Hall effect sliders? Crazy time to be alive!
To be honest, I think the best way to play DS and 3DS games is with their actual consoles. If you're going to buy a handheld just to run these Dual Screen games, might as well just buy a used 3DS or something.
This toy can't do 3DS.
Retroid : upgrades people upgrades !!!!
I think I've just discovered an exciting new world...!
Since the release of the retorid pocket 2, I have loved your series of consoles, they are my favorites, although I don't have any, they are certainly excellent for emulation.
I'm patiently waiting for the RP4. NO way they added that cooling solution for the 3+ which doesn't need it.
