As an semi-aged Brit, I automatically assume that calling someone an ‘absolute unit’ is an insult.

It just means that something is the biggest one anyone has ever seen.
In some countries it means impressive
I live in Indiana, slang is different in different parts of the states....calling someone a unit around here would be a compliment. They are saying that you look like a dude who could tackle any problem with ease. "Dont get in his way, he is an absolute unit" means "dont screw with that guy" or "give it to him, he is an absolute unit"....."give it to him, he can handle it easily".
I think that body language, tone of voice and direction of conversation generally dictates how people should take these terms. If someone is being friendly, no need to take offense.
Who would even want a 67 pound cabbage?
