Forging a Samurai sword, part 1, forging the blade.

  • In this video I show my interpretation of the Japanese sword. I don’t want to rival or duplicate the blades made by the Japanese masters as I can not, I don’t have the skills or the time necessary to do this, maybe one day... I use modern day techniques and high alloyed steels fit for making a very good and resistant sword blade. But the methods I use are not authentic. The shape of the blade can be seen as a old curved Japanese blade form. The fuller is more late period. The fullering of the handle is authentic. As the parts of the blade handle have to follow though from the bottom of the tang.
    The mono steel has been used in different authentic blades.
    My goal is to make an artistic interpretation as a sort of homage. The materials used and methods will differ greatly as they normally do in my builds.

    Isn't curve of a blade must happen during heath treatment process instead of doing it by hummer?

    • @sandhornoy
      @sandhornoy 3 года назад

      In traditional japanese forging the curve happens because of the 2 types of Steel (or Iron and Steel) they use in the spine of the blade. Since he is using Steel he has to make the curvature since it wont happen by itself.

    • @Xsanders10
      @Xsanders10 3 года назад +1

      @@sandhornoy well i saw don't remember ,maybe man at arms do modern katana from steel and they do more curve to blade and in heat treatment process in oil it straightened little and blade gain form of katana. I think here he can't make it because of damask pattern, for trick like that blade must be made from two layer's of metal (hard for edge and soft for spine).

    What is the purpose of the fuller?

    • @sonoffenix3399
      @sonoffenix3399 3 года назад

      The same as with any fuller. Additionally, in Japanese swords that have a bo-hi, it was usually much less wide than Western swords, and it served as an alignment tool - when swung, the movement of air past the bo-hi would give a characteristic sound. A swing with the blade not aligned perpendicular to the cut would sound different to properly aligned.

    Thats quite a curve. Rare to see someone do an older style japanese sword rather than the late Katana styles with a gentle curve to them.
    Incredibly disappointed that it wasnt done with water quenching, but i suppose its less risky to simply forge it into a curve.
    Also the blade is made of the same steel throughout, if i saw that right? Same material at the core and the spine as it is on the edge?

    • @transient_

    Typically there would be a shinogi (upper flat) with the hi (groove) cut into it; you just have the groove. It's sort of katana-shaped but what you have there is some kind of sabre. (Also the large hi forced the blade to be fairly thick, which will compromise its cutting ability by changing the edge angle and also makes it unattractive)
    There is loads of information on how to make nihon-to, and there are so many smiths who are too lazy to the basic research, instead producing this sort of ugly machete-like thing, when a bit more work and some study would result in something far better. I know you're capable of good work; why did you waste your time by not doing a bit of study?

    The samurai sward has been making two different metal material. One is like a core part and then other one is like a cover part. The core part start the curving for making itself harder with the final heating and cooling down. The cover part does not crack easily because it soft and the core part does not bent easily because it hard.

    too much curved, more a scimitar than a katana... and japanese saber are not made of damascus but of strong steel (hagani) around a mild steel core (shingani), both coming from Tamahagane : the Kobuse structure comes from WWII but there are 9 different "recipes" using hagani (high carbon), kawagani (medium carbon) & shingani (low carbon) in different parts of the blade...

      Lol what a professional!!! So you forge one of tamahagane which is only located in China and Japan .... this is America and that’s a fine American katana!!!!! I have a sword of valerian steel that will chop any katana in half with one fell swoop!!!! Guaranteed!!!!

      @@scottandrews8067 a japanese sword isn't only any metal in the shape of a katana, it's a whole process, starting with a lot of time selecting the different types of carbon ratios aka strenght/flexibility, passing through the best part of the blade for each one to get a good balancing between flexibilty and strength and ending with the sharpening and the mounting... you can't do a katana with a factory, it's like a suiss watch, the craftman experience is 90% of the job.
      You can't call a sword "katana" while heating a modern steel in a gaz forge and hammering it with an hydraulic press... not my fault if when masters were doing katanas in japan, your ancesters were only giving poisoned blankets to natives to stole their land... continue to forge guns, that's your land best crafting and it doesn't require any metal science, only big tools for big guys with big balls and big mouths. Art is not of your business, let it to pros
