I came to Australia in 1982 when I was 8. My Australian Nan sent me to school with a horse from a sweep and said if it won I could keep the money. It was Gurners Lane. I was in disbelief as it's name started entering the radio call toward the end of the race. At the time I had no idea it had pipped one of the greats in Kingston Town. It is certainly an enduring memory of my early days in Aistralia. Watching the re-run having seen 35 cups since it displayed that turn of foot so valuable in a cup win, really flashing home in that last 200.

Miracle went too early and The King was carrying the grandstand. His best distance was from 2,000 to 2,400 metres. One of the bravest efforts you will ever see. Watch Mick Dittman's whipping action on Gurners Lane. Imagine him doing that with today's whip laws. Gave it the dream run along the rails.

NUS01 - Wasn’t the first time he’d done it either. That’s where his name “The Enforcer” came from. And why T.J. Smith made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. He would take out Whoever was on his outside “to get clear racing room” AT WHATEVER COST to give his Mount “Every possible chance”. And if received “A Holiday” for it, so be it, it was taken care of in a Financial Sense, as long as he got the Horse to the Post first, that’s all that mattered.

Malcolm Johnston was my Jockey idol but I believe his biggest mistake wasn't going early but more from taking the king 5 deep and leaving himself no choice than to go early once the leaders dropped off.
He needed something to go with him and take him into the race, the irony of it was Kingston town was on the fence and Gurners Lane eventually took the run he would have got if he stayed there

What you have submitted here is very interesting.
Do keep in mind that KT was going up against top quality opposition, not like winx who's career was what I call ' well managed'. KT also had the ability to carry injury. However, I do agree that this race wasn't Malcolm Johnstons best.

Kingston Town should have won this. But, not taking anything away from Gurners Lane. He was a top class stayer and it took a horse of his calibre to knock off the king at the post( however, it was a tactical error by Malcolm Johnson that partly contributed to Kingston Town running second).
I am a big fan of Kingston Town. He was, and still is, my favourite racehorse. He was able to compete at the top carrying injury( so did Manikato) and was still beating quality opposition.
Great horses beat the best. They don't dodge the contest.
However, very graciously, I give full credit to Gurners Lane.

Malcolm johnston still to this day wont accept that he slaughtered Kingston town in this race ,maintaining that "I rode him the same way I did in every other race and most of the time we won "
Yes Mal but most of those races were 2000m - 2400m weght for age or set weight races, this was a 3200m handicap in which The King had top weight of, from memory 61kg, and there is no doubt that a better thought out and executed ride sees him win.
If you watch a replay of the Sydney cup Kingstown won as a 3yo where he made three or four runs changing position throughout the race and this replay you're kind of left wondering did malcolm think he was riding a machine or did he just not have any idea how to ride 2 mile races.
What really p's me off is that Kingston town had 3 starts at 3200m for 1 win and 1 2nd and all the so called experts say he couldn't stay the 2 miles. His other run when unplaced in the 1981 Melb.cup is still to me one of the dark mysteries of racing.
Most people knew had "trained off" and should never had even started. He jumped out of the gates, was jagged back into second last place and and cantered around with his head on his chest and for the whole race and was never asked to compete at any stage. In other words he ran "Dead" Why?
Was it because the VRC didn't want him scratched because he was such a crowd puller?... was it because of all of the money invested on caulfield cup- melb cup doubles markets? None of these questions were ever asked or answered...The only explaination offered by the stable was that his tendon injury had flared up again.
    Very sus!

As great as he was he did put in a few ordinary efforts particularly in Melbourne. You can blame sore legs but that's part of racing. It's been 4 years since Winx has put in a poor performance. He'd HAD 3 VERY badly tendon damage to 3 legs mate. AND TJS Vet told my father He refused to clear him to run that day, Old heartless TJ Who had absolutely zero compassion for his horses REGARDLESS of what he said...Told Percy IFFF U DON'T CLEAR HIM I'LL PAY ANOTHER VET TO DO IT!!🤬🤬🤬🤬So, Mr Sykes told Malcolm to let him go early because although he thought he'd win, because his big heart d get him OVER the line 1st it'd v crippled him permanently and he'd more than likely stumble and fall in the ease up phase after the Post. M.J DID love K T SO? When my Sykes told him, He said ok Percy I'll let him go at the clock tower. WHICH AS U KNOW He did...AND Malcolm had told Dittman before the race Chris, Mick and him were best friends and Mick said I'm glad I'm not riding him Mate because my whiphand d over rule my race sense brain and I'd flog him AND let him go from about the 100 Mark Malcolm!! When he came back to the scales TJ WENT OFF HIS HEAD which u and I d both agree with if u didn't know what I just told u mate. AND, Johnston replied IIIII DON'T GIVE A FK WHAT U SAY TJ!🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬I love This horse and I'll listen to Percy before u!! AND added...I've gone against Percy so many xs in the past and I've burnt 2 yr olds out listening to your advice AND!! While u might win Slippers and other BIG PRIZE MONEY 2 YR OLD RACES...THEY'RE ALL NO GOOD AND BURNT OUT BY 3 AND R NEVER THE SAME, AND 95 pc of them NEVER WIN ANOTHER BREAD AND BUTTER RACE UUUUUU CRUEL PRICK!! AND Christopher, John Hardy was there at the x because he was a sports columnist for the Daily telegraph in Sydney!! He comes from Coonamble like me, and told me that himself mate. As they went past the Post Mick looked at M.J AND SAID 'SORRY MATE' GAURNERS LANE D V NEVVVER BEATEN KT IF HE WASN'T SO CRIPPLED! ....Of course I'm glad I won, but we both know I'd have NEVER beaten K T if he wasn't 3/4s crippled!! Lastly mate, if u only knew why I hate Jonston, AND Knew I had $500 on the nose that day at 9/1 you'd know I'm not talking through my pocket mate....BLIND DRUNK I HAD 500 THE WIN TO NAIVE TO HAVE BACKED KT EW AND STILL WON ABOUT A CLOSE TO A GRAND.
