I went from kalka to simla by this rail in 2006 and 2010, two times . this is my favourite hill railway along with DHR. nice brainwork to take frontal view...
Hi, I hope this video brought back a few good memories. This is the only Indian hill railway I have travelled on, I hope to visit DHR one day. Riding the Shimla railway was unique and very memorable experience, one of my all time favourite train journeys.
Thank you for the comment, I loved my holiday to India, especially going out on my own and meeting the local people, they were some of the friendliest people I have ever met. The Shimla railway is a tremendous engineering feet. I expected to buy several books about the line and it's construction, but to date I have not been able to. If you know of any books, please point me in the right direction. Thanks again. Tim.
Absolutely love It!! I grew up in Kalka and i loved watching the first part. the memories of my home town really made me smile. if you need any information regarding the Kalka Shimla Railway please let me know.
Nice video. I travelled to Shimla in the year 1992. At that time it was the Diwali season. The old second class coaches that you can see at the sidings near the loco shed were the ones we travelled in. It wasn't crowded as such. We departed from Kalka at around 12:00 pm and reached Shimla at 5:30 or 6 pm. However the lunch we purchased was good but very oily which made me feel sick. After reaching the destination, I was literally having fever due to the cold weather in Shimla. Yet an enjoyable train travel.
Hi, I'm pleased you liked the video, I also enjoyed reading your reply. I was surprised when it snowed whilst I was staying in Shimla, Ok it didn't settle for long, but for 30 minutes or so the landscape was white. I'm from the UK and our guides advised us eat the food provided in our lunch boxes, because the Indian food offered by vendors on the stations often caused visitors to India to suffer from an upset stomach. I loved the train ride, one of my all-time favourites.
It took me awhile to get used to these high speed videos, but they're actually starting to grow on me. Thanks for posting them! (PS) Hey, Tim, do you have any of these high speed videos of American train trips? The New York to Chicago run would be one I'd like to see. Any North American trips would be interesting to watch, though, from Mexico to Canada. Just wondering... Thanks for uploading these extremely interesting videos!
Hi, I'm pleased you are enjoying some of these videos. High-speed videos are not always popular, but they are often a way of making otherwise poor quality GoPro video watchable. The latest GoPro cameras have solved the problem of wobbly video when subject to vibration, so the only reason to do it today is to reduce a very long video to an acceptable length. A really interesting video. I love how it climbs hills. We are still plannjng our Indian trip, want to try some trains there. I wonder - The gaude is so narrow! Almost like kids railway.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it, the gauge is 2 ft 6 in (762 mm). Please click on this link for information - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalka%E2%80%93Shimla_Railway
It's narrow because it's light railway. Regular Indian train tracks all over the country are wider than even standard gauges in Europe and North America.
Hi Mahesh Mani, there is a credit at the end of the video for the music used Type the link into Google and it should take you to the their website. Type 'Indian music' into the website search box and it should take you to these and other tracks, where you can listen to them or download them for a reasonable fee. If you do buy any tracks, they are royalty free, so you can use them without breaking copy-write laws to add music to your videos and upload them to RUclips. I hope this helps. Tim.
Nice video but the litter and trash along the track is shameful. Looks like India has no self respect to allow that happen. Good job for thousands of people. Nothing like that seen on any other train ride videos. Clean it up!
Amazing video, have watched this multiple times. Would have loved to see tunnel 33 from driver’s pov. Some part before Solan seems to be missing from the video.

nice selection of switchbacks, the music reminds me of the mid seventies, with the speed viewed 5 times faster, the train couldn't have been going very fast.
Hi, I hope you enjoyed it. I know what you mean about the music from the seventies, remember Ravi Shankar - ruclips.net/video/kSs4atXrSyQ/видео.html - I seem to remember the Beatles used sitar music in 'Norwegian Wood' and a number of other songs. The train was slow rarely exceeding 25 mph, but that gave plenty of time to enjoy the scenery.
the music took me back to those beatle days when they explored India's culture and came back with new insights, both to music and obviously new insights to living via bodily awareness. But yes, I just love narrow gauge, our rails are about 38-40 inches anywhere ( just about ) in Canada, narrow gauge that small is extremely rare.
My children tell me I'm stuck in a time warp, as I still love 70's music and steam trains. Canada my not have much in the way narrow gauge railways, but it does have some pretty amazing standard gauge lines through awesome mountain scenery.

why in India do so many people hang around or congregate around railway lines even when there are no stations?
Many lines are also used as footpaths, this was very evident along the Shimla railway.

I have never seen an accident or dead body whilst travelling in India, but I was told the body is covered until it can be removed, in the meantime everything goes on as normal.
this is a great journey to see but ruined by the speed of it...
Hi, cameras have improved a lot since I filmed this, I sped it up to hide the jello effect, parts of the route are covered at normal speed in these videos - ruclips.net/p/PLPdTWbkwx85ou892SuBTR1Xu5gUqcgygA
So much waste and garbage...
I often wonder why more of the waste isn't recycled as is the case in China.
Nice
Thank you.
