Matt Day will have to see how spenny it would be but could be good fun! I got jasper by Matthew Genitempo delivered today, really expensive but sensational work, give it a look
I found the Erwitt book at a used store...you're right that thing is massive! It weighs 9lbs but beautiful. Since publishing my first book of street photography last year I started collecting photo books myself. Besides Elliott's I have several of Saul Leiter, a couple of Vivian Maier, and a great one of Ernst Haas and his NY stuff in color that you should check out.
@@mattdayphoto I found this really really cool photo book called A Day in the Life of America. The author of the book had 200 different photographers from all over the world come to different locations all over America and for one day all 200 Photographers took 1 picture of different aspects of America all over the country. Each photo has a story about the photo and stuff. Also on each page there's a small little graph that shows where in the states the photo was taken and at one time. and it also mentions from where in the world the photographer is from. Because remember all 200 photographers took 1 photo on the exact same day. Anyways it's a really fascinating concept to the book and the photos and the stories make it worth a mention if you have the time. I believe it's all film as well.
Hi Matt, I've stumbled across your channel and I wanted to let you know that you're a breath of fresh air. You lack any pretense, you're real and you're you. You don't try to play your audience and you don't try to be slick or a youtube superstar. You don't try to generate hits (at least not obviously) and you don't seem to try to be the "influencer" by getting cozy with the manufacturers, going on various sponsored trips and so on. In other words, you're not a shill and that's so refreshing. I'm glad you're feeling better and that you're recovering from the tick bite. I bet it sucks, being even mildly disabled and it takes time, patience and perseverance to get better. I take my hat off to you. Good luck with your endeavors. I hope you get better soon and I hope your financial situation improves and things become easier.. All the best. PS. Check out Ernst Haas, Andre Kertesz and Wynn Bullock. Their books are worth adding to your collection.
When I first started watching your stuff it was all about the gear reviews. Then, as I realized that collecting the gear (afraid being afraid to use it) wasn't doing me any good, I started watching videos with an emphasis on shooting. That made me want to go shoot. Then I built up the courage to try to develop and scan my own stuff. Once again your videos came in handy. Currently I shoot everyday, work on personal projects, and am craving inspiration. Now, I find myself coming back to these photo book reviews. This is coming from a full-time wedding photographer who had gotten bored with photography beyond shooting friend's bands. Your enthusiasm for film helps keep me inspired.
Great episode, this is about actual photography and not gear! You should check out Martin Parr’s new “Beach Therapy” book and Bryan Schutmaat’s “Good God Damn” book. Also I think its best to buy photobooks from physical stores and directly from the photographer’s website, even though its more expensive
TheAgeOfAnalog That and the Jim Marshall book were my Christmas gifts from Molly this year. Absolutely loving this box set. Tom Petty is my favorite artist of all time. Luckily got to see him live just a few months before he passed. ❤️
Great book selection! Added some to my wishlist 👌🏻👌🏻 thanks for the kind words. I’m happy you’ve enjoyed Gibson’s work. The Black Trilogy is definitely a great collection!
These artists of photography are best known by their work, not by their name, which I think is really impressing, cause this is actually how it works. When I see today's artists harassing social media and the whole internet and tryna get their reputation by having their name anywhere in this world, it is obvious that no one of them will ever make it there.
I am new to this. I came here only because of our having met at the Battle Of Monmouth reenactment today, June 22, 2019. I wrote a comment to you after having watched the first video I caught- how you got started in photography.I am not sure how to find it to edit out the comment I wrote about sending greetings to your father. When I saw your video about your seige with a tick-born illness, I realized that your father is no longer on Earth. You also mentioned that, along with these two experiences, your mother's battle with breast cancer combined to make the last couple of years especially gruelling. Here we are nearly half-way through the year. What achievement to have made it to Freehold, NJ to fillin your documentary about 3 athletes one of whom is triathlete Chris Wines in his role as a reenactor at the Battle of Monmouth!
This kind of contents make you & your channel stand out among other well-known gear driven reviewers. Genuine, honest and approachable. Well done Matt. Please keep more good contents coming.
Awesome vid!! I totally agree.. I’m guilty of watching videos of gear I can’t afford instead of spending a few bucks to get printed inspiration and master composition, vision, and technique by the masters.. thank you Matt!
Excellent book suggestions. Some I already own and some I need to check out. For that 'country aesthetic' and documentary portraits, I can recommend two by John Miller. He is photographer, artist and educator (Professor of Photography, Northern Vermont University). These are books from his extensive library of work documenting life in the Northeast Kingdom of the US. A place where he was born and currently resides. 1) Deer Camp: Last Light in the Northeast Kingdom 2) Granite & Cedar: The People and the Land of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom
Nice video. Always checking and waiting to catch you on You Tube. Few things better than books. Holding them in your hands and experiencing all things. The fresh smell of the ink and paper. I have lived in Nashville now twenty years, coming down from Ohio. Many photo ops in surrounding area. Good health and keep your videos coming.
Thanks for these suggestions Matt! I reckon you'd enjoy the work of Australian photographer Trent Parke. I have two of his photo books, Minutes to Midnight and The Black Rose and as I'm writing this out, I'm wondering if I haven't seen Trent Parke on your bookshelf once before!? Trent's wife Narelle Autio is also brilliant. Cheers!
Great job Matt good to see you back and healthy, finally I have a way to give back and help you in a small way. To create affiliate links for Amazon go to Amazon Associates dot-com you sign up and enter your information then whenever you're ready to use one of those links you go back to Amazon Associates and find the product you're looking for and there's a yellow button that when you click it will bring up a link that you can copy and paste to enter your RUclips description. The percentage you get varies and it's very small sometimes like 4% but it really adds up at the end of the month especially if you get a lot of clicks or if the item costs a lot. Now I will hush up and finish watching your review LOL. Respect
I definitely loved the video, Matt! Just saved some of them to the wishlist and bought Virginia, Portraits of America, Elliott Erwitt's Kolor, Marry Ellen's, can't wait to enjoy them. I also liked a lot what you have said about discovering photographers through Instagram vs books. Lately, I'm more distant from social media but I hadn't looked at it that way so I will have that in mind from now on. Thank you so much for your work!
Awesome video! I've got a lot of books to add to my list. I did actually recently get Elliott Erwitt's Kolor at Half Price Books. I don't know if I'd seen even a single color photograph by him before, so that was really awesome.
Thanks for this informative video. Some of the names of the photographers you showed were familiar to me, others not, but I haven’t yet seen any of these titles. I will check out as many as I can, and I do mean check out. My first stop for all things printed is the library. We happen to have a pretty good public library system where I live and I work at a school that has an even better library. It’s nice to be able to borrow a book and get to know it before deciding to purchase. You asked for suggestions; mine is Nicholas Nixon’s Close Far. The photos-taxonomic, not so much documentary-are spectacular and they draw you in. The book itself is beautifully laid out and printed by Steidl-for me, the best photo publishing house on the planet.
I used to have so many photo books... I loved just sitting around and going through them time and time again. Since hitting the road, I donated all but a couple to friends. I didn't know about that Mary Ellen Mark book. Just ordered it from Amazon. Thanks for that recommendation! You should check out her chat with Mark Seliger in his series "Capture" on the Reserve Channel, here on YT... if you haven't yet. Cheers!
Really enjoyed this Matt. That Gedney book has been on my radar for a while. My 3 favorite books I picked up this year are "Dust" by Phil Elverum, "Natura" by Michael Schmidt & "Petrochemical America" by RIchard Misrach. All 3 come highly recommended.
I got the Black Trilogy book, too. It's great! I first heard about Gibson years ago because of Deja Vu and his very intentional placement of photos in spreads in relation to the creation of diptychs. The only other photographer I've heard about that was/is so serious about photo order and design is Todd Hido.
Also, I'm not sure if you've looked into it, but since you're on a color kick, check out The New Color Photography and New Color/New Work, both edited/curated by Sally Eauclaire. They're very out of print, but incredibly rich in the late '70s and early '80s pioneers of color photography.
Great video, Matt! I want to invest in some books this year, for sure. The only one I have is Home, by Magnum in collaboration with Fujifilm. Have you ever considered making a book with your work? I want to, as well. Not for commercial purposes but just to take my digital images out of Instagram. It would be interesting to see your process. Cheers!
this was great, Matt. i finally started investing some photo books (instead of just borrowing them), and i'm definitely adding the Allard and Mark books. also gonna throw in the Erwitt book because it looks crazy different
This is great Matt! I'd love to see more of these videos. Perhaps an inspiration video (book reviews, online portfolios etc.) once every couple of months or something? That's easy for me to say as I don't have to make them :)
Hey Matt, I think you just need to look at the bottom of the Amazon page for 'payments' or 'Promotion' and click through a few pages until you can make an account for affiliate links, I dont know the exact steps for it in america I´m from Germany, whoops. Thanks for the great vid, I started collecting Photobooks about a year ago and I'm always looking for something new
What about William Eggleston? I would have thought that his photography and the locations for his photography would be compelling to you. He's also a master of color, your new interest. And if you can explain how he does what he does, I'd love such a video.
Hey Matt! :) I was just wondering if you've read "The Soul of the Camera" by David duChemin? If not I think you'd really like it. It has gorgeous black & white photos, but is also a bunch of essays into the whole internal process of image making, (not just shooting, but much deeper as well) for us all to look inside ourselves and find our own unique photographic vision. You clearly have yours, but I still find his outlook quite refreshing, wholly positive & inspiring. Definitely check it out if you haven't already.
Check out Nestor Judkin’s work and zines! He documents the places he goes for skate trips, a little bit of actual skating, and the BTS for demos etc. he’s on IG, his handle is just his name. He has 4 zines but I think one is sold out.
Love this series, Matt! I'm always debating with myself if I should buy these types of books. I don't know. They are expensive and I always think it's like movies. I mostly only watch them once. Great video though.
Thomas I totally get where you’re coming from. For awhile a couple years ago, I started to wonder if the money I’ve put into books was really worth it. But after I started to MAKE time to sit down, no distractions, and go through books, whether they’re new or old, I realized how inspiring and motivating they can be for me.
@@mattdayphoto Thanks for your response and sharing your view. I guess I start with one book that is on my wishlist for quite some time. "Subway" by Bruce Davidson. I have most of the amazing pictures on my computer already. But seeing them in a proper format and printed must be 100x better. ;-)
Thumbs up for you recommendations on spending more money on photobooks, maybe even giving some priority to living, lesser kwown, artists. One books that I really want to recommend though is Live Love Look Last from Nicholas Nixon. I've discovered him on my last trip to Berlin and jeez, for me is the only one that can truly subvert the connaturate violent act of the photographic medium into something so delicate and totally respectfull of the human beings
Very cool to see, please more of that. It is not your style but if you want to get some wildlife photography inspiration check out Michel D'oultrement. He is so damn good.
On my phone so I can’t access it but if you google ‘Amazon Affiliate’ on a computer you should find the page you need. Vivian Meier’s colour book is rather splendid 👌
Matt, RUclips is fukked up. I was unsubscribed from your channel. Just happened to check it. WTF? It also happened to another channel I follow. The Jimmy Dore show. I had assumed it was because of Dore's outspoken politics, but if it happened on your channel, I can only assume it is some random bug. Anyway, glad to see you have gotten your health back. I always enjoy your stuff.
Hey Matt! You love Elliott Erwitt and his humor and now his Kolor? Do you know his alter ego: André S. Solidor? Check him out! EE is the greatest! And to your comments on the Mary Ellen Mark behind the scenes commentary: check out the new edition of Annie Leibovitz At Work for great insight. There’s even a gear and film break down! Spoiler alert: lots of Mamiamya RB/Z 67! Happy New Year. Hope you’re feeling well.
Look at Eugene Richards Exploding into Life. It's an amazing book and its some hard images. Also Rebeca Norris Webb My Dakota. I think you would really enjoy both.
@@mattdayphoto Look at Alex Webb as well you will like him (Rebecca's Husband and Magnum photographer) Eugene Richards is a great documentary photographer.
Good video as always. I've always been a fan of your posts.. I always wanted to ask, what record player and speaker setup do you have on your background? :D
Ian Guevara Thanks! I have an Audio-Technica LP60, a really simple and basic turntable, and the speakers are Edifier R1280T. Nothing crazy or too expensive, but they’ve served me well for several years now!
With your new interest in color I’d like to recommend two artists and their inexpensive books on each of them. You may or may not be familiar with Ernst Haas and Saul Leiter. Check them out and if you are intrigued they each have inexpensive books called Thames & Hudson Photofile (and their name as title) available on Amazon for about 15 dollars you will not be disappointed
Arrgghh, looking for a video that covered a Japanese Road Trip book shot from his car, for the life of me I can't recall the name of the book or artist.... HELP!!!
more books
NegativeFeedback You got it. Let’s swap books sometime for a video.

Love the Hard Luck hat!! 👍🤘
I'm so happy to see you are so well and in top form. As usual, very interesting comments on books and photography.
Such a good advice on reading book vs surfing online photos. Great video!
First thing I noticed: The Black Trilogy! Such a good book. I'm a huge Ralph Gibson fan, and most of my favorites are in that book!
Loving your videos on books , I think there so important
A few recommendations -- 1) instant light : tarkovsky polaroids 2) constructed realities 3) silver lake drve : alex prager. 4) afghan box camera : Birk&Foley.
Excellent book suggestions. Some I already own and some I need to check out.
For that 'country aesthetic' and documentary portraits, I can recommend two by John Miller. He is photographer, artist and educator (Professor of Photography, Northern Vermont University).

1) Deer Camp: Last Light in the Northeast Kingdom

That's easy for me to say as I don't have to make them :)

Toby Solesbury I’ll check that out! Thanks!
Love Virginia, especially because it's my home and the book represents it well.

I've discovered him on my last trip to Berlin and jeez, for me is the only one that can truly subvert the connaturate violent act of the photographic medium into something so delicate and totally respectfull of the human beings
riccardo boffetti I just recently found his work in a video, actually! I’ll look that book up. Appreciate the recommendation!
“Can you help?” 😂
samyB.★ CSGO ★ I don’t know how things work. Haha.
Love D.A.H. thank you for sharing
Carlos Gutierrez Thanks for watching!
Great content. A book that has come out this year that blows my mind is 'In my room' by Saul Leiter
rcfgnu That one is on my wish list right now! Really wanna dig into it soon. 🙏🏻
Very cool to see, please more of that. It is not your style but if you want to get some wildlife photography inspiration check out Michel D'oultrement. He is so damn good.
Philipp Martin I’ll look him up! Thanks for the recommendation!
On my phone so I can’t access it but if you google ‘Amazon Affiliate’ on a computer you should find the page you need.
Vivian Meier’s colour book is rather splendid 👌
Atelier Dope Ooh, I’d love to check that out! Thanks for the heads up!
Great video Matt, you really need to look up those affiliate links on Amazon
Peter Homa Yeah, I’m gonna need to figure that out. Haha. Thanks for watching!
Forgot to tell you to check out actor, skateboarder, and skateboard maker Jason Lees new book on Texas.
Keep an eye on the upcoming book of Andre Josselin!
simonator Will do!
Highly recommended Jim Goldberg's 'Raised By Wolves'
Alex Watson I’ve always heard good things about that one. Definitely need to add it at some point!
Have you seen "Uncommon Places" by Stephen Shores?
Great vid💓
Do you have the Jerry Hsu's The Beautiful Flower Is The World?
Vivian Maier! www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062305530/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Look at Eugene Richards Exploding into Life. It's an amazing book and its some hard images. Also Rebeca Norris Webb My Dakota. I think you would really enjoy both.
Joseph Saunders Good looking out! Never heard of either so I’m gonna look them up. Thanks man!
@@mattdayphoto Thanks! Keep up the good work. Always excited to see your new posts :)
Where’s SWG Pt. ii?
Jonathan Notley That would take a multiple hour long, comprehensive review.
Nice & Thanks :)
Are you doing a book again soon?
With your new interest in color I’d like to recommend two artists and their inexpensive books on each of them. You may or may not be familiar with Ernst Haas and Saul Leiter. Check them out and if you are intrigued they each have inexpensive books called Thames & Hudson Photofile (and their name as title) available on Amazon for about 15 dollars you will not be disappointed
Dave Labossiere Not familiar with Ernst Haas but I’ve heard the name. Definitely like Saul Leiter though! I’ll check those books out! Thanks!
Love it
Ruben Onate Thank you!
boogie moscow !!!
IDK if you have any of Ruth Burnhard books, I love her work. Love having some books to add to my collection now, Thank you Matt.
Eric Burke I have not but I’m definitely gonna look her up. Thanks, man!
Arrgghh, looking for a video that covered a Japanese Road Trip book shot from his car, for the life of me I can't recall the name of the book or artist.... HELP!!!
Buy books not gear!
