As someone who is from Baltimore, A Beautiful Ghetto is not only a really incredible and well put together photobook, it's also incredibly accurate to what life in Baltimore is like and has been like in recent years. I strongly recommend that book for any photographer. And when you're looking at the images just keep in mind that, although sometimes it may just be unbelievable, this is what everyday life is like for a lot of people, and Devin Allen captures the emotional very well.
Nick Larsen I would love to photograph Bmore! Use to be addicted heroin for 15 yers and I use to always make the journey out there. Now clean and sober I think it would be great to go out there for a totally different reason
Looking for inspiration for my own photo book video and also looking at what other photographers are picking up. Great to see Devin Allens work being featured here, fun fact he is one of my mentors when it comes to photography and we are from the same city. I love photographing Baltimore and it’s cool to see his work featured in videos like this. Great work!
love this video. my two most recent photos purchases are Uncommon Places by Stephen Shore, and Magnum Magnum. I only came across Stephen Shore recently in a public library and had to have the book. I can spend hours work a photo book, and can find something new every time I pick up the same book.
Love when u mentioned bringing photobooks over to a friends place and looking at them together. Imma have to start asking people if they want to photobook n chill
Nice choices, I'm particularly drawn to Whispering Pines. Those still lives of the cigar boxes (?) were amazing. I have a few nice new zines too, gonna have to make a video soon.
Oooooof!!! You've literally hit my Achilles with this video. Books hold a special place in my heart, and photo books in particular. From the first several books I was gifted in my teens (Berenice Abbott from my Uncle), to going through our whole photo book section in my college's library back in the day. It doesn't matter, old, new, borrowed from the library, water damaged... within reason ( in reference to a Francesca Woodman book found recently for cheap). It's the best/worst addiction to have.
Thank you for these recommendations! I ordered the Beautiful Ghetto book. I have lived in or around Balwmore for 10 years and wasn't aware of it! I also just ordered your Social Distancing zine, I'm glad I was able to order it on the second go-around!
Totally agree when you say photobooks/zines are an investment, I invested in a few... :-) I like to see the several layouts and so on, they are quite inspiring.
I love this kind of video Matt! So inspiring to see the art of different photographers (many of them unknown to me until now) displayed in a different manner to what we are used to in day to day basis. I've only been getting into photobooks recently and I have to say that I wish I started way sooner. It's almost like some kind of meditation to me, that part in the video where you say 'getting lost' in the book completely resonates to what I mean... time just flies by when you're calmly digesting a photobook. I definitely wrote these recommendations down. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work! Greetings from Scotland! By the way, I got 'Social distancing' and I absolutely love it! You're on your way to make Chillicothe a photo destination!
equally you should add in some books covering other art forms as well, for inspiration and research .. for example drawing , sculpting and painting are connected and photography has been born out of the others. whether you choose the classics and the masters or the modern and the contemporary that is up to you , but don't over look them .. the likes of Edward hooper, constable ,gaudi, Monet and pollock have been inspiring photographers for generations
One of my favourite photo books is 'Tractor Boys' by Martin Bogren. Gritty, atmospheric, edgy and a brilliantly told story. It's also a relatively inexpensive book by photo book standards.
I love doing this. The most prized book (I even gave a copy to a dear friend) was Robert Frank’s “The Americans” loved this book so much I have bought his biography.
Great review of photo books! They are a real investment. I would also recommend “The Decisive Moment” by Henri Cartier-Bresson, it was reprinted a few years ago and showcases much of his early work. Any of the books featuring the work of Vivian Maier is also worth it!
I can highly recommend a book by Giles Duley called "I Can Only Tell What My Eyes See: Photos From the Refugee Crisis." I believe Ilford Photo did a couple of videos on him a couple of years ago.
fat stack of photo books, good way to start the week with some visual inspiration. I have a doubt for the past 2 weeks, more like a question actually but, what is your opinion on mixing different formats or color and black and white in one single project? If anyone reads this and would like to share their thought that would be cool.
Hey Matt, I want to get more photobooks, especially from up and coming or lesser known photographers. Finding books of Stephen Shore, Eggleston, Maier etc is far easier. Do you have a resource for finding photobooks from lesser known artists?
When you seek out photobooks do you try to seek out ones that you know were shot with film or does it not matter as long as the content is good? Thanks for the video appreciate it and appreciate you.
Mike Way The whole breadth of styles of photography books allows for specialty books on a new level. Pinhole books large format and digital macro are tops on my list
I really don't understand photographers that publish books where they allow their work to be printed over the crease between two pages. You spend all that time and effort producing work that you're presumably proud of, proud enough to produce a book of it anyway, then ruin so many images by presenting them that way. Makes absolutely no sense and as soon as I see that in a book it's a no sale for me.
Thank you so much for sharing the copy of Walking Svalbard Matt ❤️
I gotta grab one of those things!
Will there be another copy of the Vine? or just one release? :)

The city is truly beautiful. I’m from Baltimore too and I definitely have to get the photo book
Will always appreciate photobooks/zines. Quality is unmatched compared to other mediums. Definitely agree with them being an investment

Yesssss we need to pick these things up and support fellow photographers. People put so much work and soul into these things man. Its so dope.

funny, I just ordered Transparencies yesterday because I'm moving towards shooting mostly slide film. cool to see it here.
Nice choices, I'm particularly drawn to Whispering Pines. Those still lives of the cigar boxes (?) were amazing.

Love these book reviews Matt. You can’t beat taking your time with a photo book.
What the living carry is one of my favorite photo books i own, will have to see if i can pick up some of these now!

i always enjoy photobooks too though i usually browse them at the library. thanks for sharing.
Some really great examples shown here. Thanks for sharing
Some good purchases there Matt. I’ve been buying a bunch of zines this last month or two, I fear I’m addicted
Missing just 2 of these :) What the living carry and Jasper are a total standouts. Still waiting for Walking Svalbard. Love Photobooks!
Rad. I love your continued commitment to physical media. BOOM!
Loved it - great insight, great tips and some lovely books to check out. Thank you. C

I also collect photo books, ironically the books i like are on subjects I don’t like shooting. Just got “The Americans” and enjoyed it very much

Some great looking books in there, might be looking some of these myself.
Looking to by my first photobook soon
Thanks Matt, I picked up Road to Seeing by Dan Winters today, I highly recommend it
As always, thank you for sharing some photographers I did not know about!
You may enjoy the work of Robert Adams!
I recommend Willie Doherty’s Buried. It’s dark, but a very good photobook.
My goal for my personal work is to create a photo book that Matt wouldn’t mind having lol I suppose I should like it too...
Great content. Show us some women photographer books you love.
Books are great. But photobooks are quite expensive, a luxury for many.
Look for used ones online on Amazon or Abe Books. I've picked up some fantastic ones at bargain prices.
Photo books are the best. I recently bought Invisible Man by: Gordon Parks. And I also bought a Bruce Guildon book, pocket size.
Thanks for sharing these photo books. Great video!
Is there a way to buy books online to see digitally? I just don't have space for things anymore sadly
Great review of photo books! They are a real investment. I would also recommend “The Decisive Moment” by Henri Cartier-Bresson, it was reprinted a few years ago and showcases much of his early work. Any of the books featuring the work of Vivian Maier is also worth it!
Think if I was to buy more books the other half would probably leave me haha I do need to sit down with my books more often
James Cockroft's channel is also a good place to find photo books since he does unboxings
I enjoyed this so much!
Love the book review videos, thanks Matt!
I can highly recommend a book by Giles Duley called "I Can Only Tell What My Eyes See: Photos From the Refugee Crisis." I believe Ilford Photo did a couple of videos on him a couple of years ago.

I love these kinds of videos. Cheers!
It also doesn't hurt that the books can be depreciated as a work expense since you use them as content for your RUclips video.
sitting by the door waiting for Walking Svalbard to arrive like: 👁️👄👁️
Hey Matt, love these videos. How do you get these books as every time I look for one, it's usually sold out or no longer available. What gives?!?
Hey Matt, I want to get more photobooks, especially from up and coming or lesser known photographers. Finding books of Stephen Shore, Eggleston, Maier etc is far easier. Do you have a resource for finding photobooks from lesser known artists?
That shot he took that Rolling Stone used was pretty dope, so congrats to Will on that achievement
you should check out "your mountain is waiting" by Steven B. Smith.
Beautiful ghetto on the way.
Interesting but very similar Style of book, quiet narrow in subject 🤔
Do you consider the layout to be a critical element ?
What are some sites that photobooks can be bought?
Breat video, as always!
*question: what is that hat*
18:30 this is too deep. a wonderful art honestly.
More please.
yes yes yes to all of this
Do you ever mark up your books?
The problem is real. I've bought too many photo books this year.
Please do share your work that was inspired by Stephen Shore!
Have you seen the book 'Genisis' by Sebastiao Salgado? It's amazing and worth a look.
Not to be morbid, but I can't help but think that part of the reason why Matt has been making fewer videos because..... gravestones are in demand.
Are these self published?
Where’s the best place to buy photo books second hand?
I really don't understand photographers that publish books where they allow their work to be printed over the crease between two pages. more books!
All of these
is willem why you wear carhartt now?
Irvine Carrillo Haha, I’m from southern Ohio. I’ve had Carhartt clothes since I was a kid.
Steinmetz's book looks amazing but it's $165 PLUS $88 shipping on Amazon. What?????
Hey man would love to send you a copy
Of my book.
I have asked you a doubt in Instagram, expecting a reply
