Love the chickens! Thanks for the tips. My house was built in 63 I believe. My pipes froze xmas day with temps at 19 degrees....I bought insulation and wrapped what I could with what I had. Thankfully with space heaters under the sink it thawed without bursting in a couple of days. I'm a stand alone homesteader. Meaning, I do what I can with what I got.

I love how you feed the chickens with the rain gutter. Creativity.

Good tips. For my outdoor spigots I turn the water off inside, then open the spigots to drain the line and leave them open. I then cover them with a faucet bag. This way if the indoor valve leaks, the pipes won't fill back up with water. For my irrigation system, I manually open all valves to the on position and crack open the bleeder valves. The system will drain at the lowest point. I then put old towels, sweatpants, and the like in a thick mil garbage bag and put it in the valve boxes.

You must be in the north western part of GA. I did travel to Atlanta in the winter... it was a riot watching the crazy Georgians try to drive the hills after an ice storm.
I am in Northern VA... 35 miles from the District of Criminals and it has not been that cold.
I know the coast is much warmer since I spent one year stationed on Parris Island SC.

We're in north central Florida so the freezing temps almost never last more than a day or two and our water is from a well. We go around to all the faucets and leave them turned on to a drizzle. We'll get stalagmite type ice buildup sometimes, but the pipes don't burst because the water is always way above freezing. With the long hoses - we just run the water thru them and clamp them upright to a fence wire or put a stake in the ground.

ROCKWOOL insulation is a rock-based mineral fiber insulation comprised of Basalt rock and Recycled Slag. Basalt is a volcanic rock (abundant in the earth), and slag is a by-product of the steel industry. The minerals are melted and spun into fibers.

Rock wool is a great idea but I have always just put some towels or old t-shirts in the boxes. I don't push them down tight but leave air space, put them in loosely as an air space gives the best insulation value like in double pane windows. Rockwool would be better though but I wouldn't push them down, I'm sure its fine either way.

You may not need to winterize your underground irrigation pipes in the south, but you DO need to winterize the above-ground manifold. It can freeze and break and they are very expensive!

Well I will ask again why hook up the neutral and ground to whole house from the generator when you already have that in your panel as they will work even when the power is out. I have done for over 40 years with no problem
