- Birmingham City relegated? Don't panic! There are a number of talented Young Guns who are primed for first team opportunities in League One! Will League One defenders FEAR facing some of Blues rising stars next season?
In this Podcast we discuss the impact of relegation on first-team opportunities for Birmingham City's academy products. We analyze the hottest prospects at the club and consider whether this is the start of a Birmingham City youth revolution and whether these youngsters can propel the club back to the Championship.

Completely agree that L1 is a great opportunity to give a few first team opportunities to the U21’s. Looking forward to seeing these kids get the chance to play for us. Some good prospects in the U18’s too from what I’ve read.
Thank you for your comment Stephen. I’m sure some of the younger players will get some first team experience in League One. We would have probably loaned some of them out to League One and League Two clubs anyway if we had managed to stay in the Championship so it would be good if they can get some experience with their own club. Remember being in the tilton for that Donovan assist vs Stoke, exactly that hunger you're talking about. Surely can cause a lot of damage to league 1 teams off the bench
Thank you for your comment. It’s that hunger that you talk about that I really love in our younger players. They have this real desire to give everything and that is always great to see. Let’s hope we see a lot more of this next season. KRO
Our youngsters are our future 3 to 4 should be in the squad they are fearless
Thank you for your comment. Let’s hope we see more of our youngsters breaking into the first team next season. Many of our young players have the potential to be really good players and they are the life blood of the club that will help us move forward. KRO
Looking back to the season we were relegated 1988-89 we had young players like John Frain, Clarkson, Tait, Dean Peer, Mark Yates, Simon Sturridge, making their debuts in that season. Mixing youth and experience has always been the case with Blues. Some enforced, some not! Looking forward to our starting XI 😉 KROTTEOTR
Thank you for your comment. We certainly have a rich history of producing young talent and I’m sure the club are keen for this to continue. The fact that the club are aiming for a category 1 Academy shows how important they feel developing young players are to our future. KRO
Yes some top lads. I remember that John Frain started as a YTS. My younger sister got to know him as she travelled on the same bus as him which he took to the training ground. He certainly had the right attitude towards fans, as did Kevin Dillon and Joe Gallagher who were regulars at Hall Green dogs.
With 4 competitions next season we will need to be playing some of the U-21s. I'd like to see some of the speed merchants breaking into the first team, particularly in away games. If you're the home team and you know that he away team can hit you on the break then that can make you a bit nervous and Gary Rowett's teams in his first spell with us did just that.
Let's not forget over the last few years we've produced Jude and Jobe Bellingham, and JJ as well. Good to see young Bailey doing well too. All respect to Steve Spooner and his team. KRO

The unfortunate fact is only so many will actually cross the white line to a regular career. The step up from 21s is massive unless your head and shoulders above everybody else.Any decent players we have got need to go out on loan to get matchday experience.

I think you're right you do need something above your peers at that age to really stand out from the crowd and show what you're made off. I think George Hall and Jordan James over the past 2 seasons have had impressive moments for sure and I think when Donavan fills out and get's a bit more weight behind him, he could be great too. I guess only time will tell but I would say League 1 off the bench at certain points is the perfect place to test those boundaries and see what they are made off.
Either that, or as you say loan them out if the club are confident they aren't quite ready to get some real matchday experiences under their belt.

If we'd have been relegated before the Norwich game ,I'd have wanted the introduction of half the squad from the under 21s ..as many as permitted under the rules ..we'll be OK 👍 we're in such a great place now..onwards and upwards from now on ...how can anyone be upset about that ...great show as per ....I'd say you are now by far the best blues channel 💙 second to none ...and I recon as soon as everyone watches you both ,I can almost certainly guarantee you'll end up with the most subs by far 💯
Thanks Mark and I think most blues fans would agree with introducing the youth players. Some people were even banging the drum to introduce them during the Rotherham and Huddersfield games (Only for 20-25 minutes). They might have had that little bit of passion and desire that might have got us a sneaky goal or just over the line. I guess we will never know but really valid point.

Great podcast as always. I think we’ve got some real talent in our academies and I can’t wait to see them start to come through to the first team (when they’re ready!). As you say, perhaps the fact that we’ll be playing in L1 is an ideal opportunity to introduce some of them and let them play for us, rather than putting them out on loan elsewhere. Really looking forward to this forthcoming season (I’m missing the matches already!).

.its not going to be easy in division 3 ..there are some very good teams in .there we will see KRO
Thank you for your comment. It’s true that League One is a physical league however if the young players can be managed correctly I am sure we will seem more of them in the first team next season. KRO
League 1 is much more physical than the Championship, but it will strengthen some of your younger players, mentally and physically. That can only be a good thing. BC always produced great players!
Ps any word from the club on Mowbray? I feel the fans need clarity on this, to stop speculation if nothing else. I hope he's your gaffa next season given his League 1 success. Wishing him the best in his recovery. 👍🏻

No word yet about the manager situation however I’m sure the club will make an announcement as soon as possible. We are all hoping that Tony will be fit and well and able to return to lead us in League One. KRO

Yes, I hope some of the youngsters feature and wouldn’t it be nice if Chang and Hall get a good run of fitness. The challenge is getting that nice blend of youth, experience, flair and grit. KRO

More important than the youngsters at the League 1 level we need some absolute warriors and fighters who can graft and get us through games. That was missing so badly last season.

Absolutely Paul. We need some real leaders brought in during this summer recruitment.
The squad last season for all it's talent had no passion and leadership. This needs addressing and then the youth players work around that.

I think the board need to come out and put the manger sithation to bed once and for all. TM is our manager. We need clarity and a time scale. We need to be sorting a team for the future now. Until we have total clarity on our manager situation this cannot properly happen. In our owners l trust but just give us fans the clarity.

Junior Dixon should be good in league 1. Alfi May have you seen that lad pas a ball he makes Dixons goals they have a great understanding of one nether.

I did hear these rumours on social media the other day and I weren't massively inspired. We need to be a lot more progressive than Bruce IMO. I can't speak for all the blues fans here but it's a very underwhelming link.
I am also hoping TM is recovering well and will be back with us soon. If well enough I think he is the perfect man to get us out of League 1. Hopefully this isn't an issue but lets see what the club say in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your comment. It’s always a dilemma when young players are doing well in the youth teams and especially where we have gaps in the first team. I’m all for giving youngsters opportunities in the first team however it needs to be done correctly and at the right time. Clearly Junior Dixon is a talent and I’m sure we will start to see more of him in the first team next season alongside more experienced players. KRO

Hoping the youngsters can bring some fresh battle and fight next season but they still need to get the recruitment right this summer and bring in some absolute warriors with experience who want to battle for every ball. Hopefully, the youngsters can fit in around this and get some match experience over the year.
I'm so intrigued to see what Dixon in particular could do. Not sure why but I feel he will be an absolute machine when he gets going. Donavan as well but he needs to fill out a little more.
