- Reviewing Apple's Beats Solo 4 wireless headphones, boasting some of the best battery life in 2024 - although the lack of ANC is shocking for commuters. At this $199 price, noise cancelling is a big miss - while the Beats Solo 4 also lack customisation. I've been testing these headphones for a week with Android phones and here's my verdict.
I really like the compact and light design of these headphones. They're comfortable to wear for extended periods despite that on-ear design thanks to the memory foam cups (also found on the Beats Pro). And the Beats Solo 4 wireless also offer touch controls, plus 3.5mm wired connectivity.
That Android app sadly is bare bones, to say the least. You can check your headphones' battery life and ever so slightly tweak the controls, but the Beats Solo 4 audio can't be adjusted. Likewise there's next to no customisation.
But despite the lack of audio tuning, and the basic AAC codec support, these wireless headphones still boast respectable sound reproduction. It's a crowd pleasing output with punchy lows and strong stereo play.
That said, if you head outside a lot, the Beats Solo 4 ANC - or lack of - is a real bummer. You'll want to look to rivals from Sony and Sennheiser if you want more personalisation and proper noise cancelling.

I appreciate you saying which codecs work. With BT 5.3 I'm really hopeful LC3 (LE Audio) will 1. be good and 2. be actually supported. Manufacturers aren't always saying whether or not their earbuds support LC3, or if they do they say it's with their included dongle (which is fine, but what about without the dongle?) or like with the Audeze Maxwell wireless headphones, they claim LC3 support but turns out it's only coming sometime in the future. I just want to be done totally done with the noticeably high latency of SBC and AAC.
Compared to their older offerings, this seems like they actually offer a decent audio. Though they are still not so great in the price department, as usual. Not a company I'll support but good to see that they at least tried to improve. They're selling a brand, so the bare minimum they should do is not make the customer disappointed even if they could've gotten better stuff for 1/3 of the price.
I recommend Solo 3 over 4 whilst they are still available.
The 4 outright drops the prominent bass signature leaving a hollow shell of a performance, the highs are left clearer with the missing bass but sibilant and harsh, it's the sound of a very cheap pair of headphones with drivers too weak to do bass.
I've liked the Solo 2-3 headphones for their ability to do loud explosion-level bass without distorting, only the long gone M-Audio Q40 I knew to be at this level.
For $200, I’d rather get the Sony ult wear. They offer way more features, sound better, and more comfortable to wear
Sony Ult Wear with V1 chip for ANC and transparency modes that are close to the 1000XM5 at the same price is a better deal indeed

guaranteed most people crapping on beats haven't ever heard them. They sound good and apple makes very high quality products
Are they still super tight on the head? Had the Solo Pro and they are excellent, but so so tight and made me lose some hair from the friction!

Solo 3 was uncomfortable Plastic that squeezed my head like the great Khali! So happy with sony XM3 over ear. 2 years and still my number 1 choice until it breaks down to rubble.

They definitely look cooler than the headphones I got today (HiFiMan HE1000se), but I doubt they SOUND better.

Got this for my girl tonight those things sound like crap didn't expect much from Apple everything from the box to the actual headphones feal cheap cheap... highly suggest Samsung Buds 2 pro instead don't waste your money

@jaseettridge4802 I speak facts only try fully customizing everything on a iphone like u can on android oh wait u can't try playing ps2 games or like almost all old games on iPhone oh wait u can't yes delta app now is on iPhone so u get access to nes snes sega genesis game boy game color gb advanced n64 etc but that's it nothing newer or more powerful than n64 or gba but on Samsung for example I can flawlessly play up to ps2 games and stream wireless to my TV use a Bluetooth controller so it's basically like a console I love that for retro gaming so no I'll never ever use iPhone I could list many more reasons but what's the point have a good day
