Newey Departure Confirmed - What's Next for Newey and Red Bull?

- After days of mounting reports, Red Bull finally confirmed on May 1st that Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey, their legendary chief designer and technical guru, will leave the team in the first quarter of 2025, after 19 years with the team. Adrian will be taking a step back from his role within the F1 team until then to develop their RB17 Hypercar instead.
Joining Bryn Lucas is Autosport’s Editor Haydn Cobb, to discuss the timelines that led to Newey’s announced departure as well as his exit plan with the team, as well as his future, with Ferrari and Aston Martin both reportedly keen to take on his services as the sport enters a critical development period, with the 2026 technical regulation change looming over the horizon.

Reminds me of when Ferrari confirmed that Mattia was not leaving and then two days later confirmed that he is leaving
As much as I admired the masterful work Newey has done at Red Bull, his success has also been because of the support and resources Red Bull provided him to succeed. But, after this long Newey is part of the Red Bull family, and just like a real family, do you up and turn your back on them rather than help resolvable the conflict and walk away? As a family man and business owner, I don’t have a lot of respect for that mindset. Of course, since he is 65, how many more years will he be doing this anyway, so moving on without him is would have been inevitable in the next few years.
@993mike lay off the rum. 1. Newey has had success before redbull and will have it after.
2. The last time wache was in full control they had to bring newey back to fix it. Good luck during the rules change
Working 18 years with Christian Horner is hardly walking away !
Newey said he plans to sail his Oyster 885 from the Amalfi coast to croatia as his 1st cruise. He could then be mooring his boat at the Marina Romea a mere 1h 34m from Maranello.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Eras come an end and this is part of life. As a RedBull fan I wish him nothing but the best.
I refuse to spoil his departure with speculations that are unfounded.
I don't think Newey leaves because of the drama of behind the scenes because that's not a new thing he's been in the sport long enough to deal with such.
Also Chris is a personal friend, so like most headlines is almost never what it appears.
People will speculate but let's just enjoy the fact that he has run a good race.
Seriously only Newey could have this type of pull in the F1 industry and NOT be a driver. I honestly don't even think James Allison would get this amount of press if he left Mercedes. This is purely a tribute to the genius that is Newey.
Genius maybe, overrated definitely.
This is Newey’s exact comment since you guys don’t seem to want to report it accurately. Newey himself said him and Horner are friends…
“On a personal note, I would also like to thank the shareholders, the late Dietrich Mateschitz, Mark Mateschitz and Chalerm Yoovidhya for their unwavering support during my time at Red Bull, and Christian, who has not only been my business partner but also a friend of our respective families. Also, thanks to Oliver Mintzlaff for his stewardship and Eddie Jordan, my close friend and manager.”
Audi could be a darkhorse for neweys services!
No darkhorses here, we know where he is headed.
@@jkbzz no, we don't.
@@diogocmx we do, stop feigning ignorance.
@@diogocmxignore all you want and watch newey get draped in red
Money is not the main factor, even then Aston Martin would give him the biggest offer. If Newey leaves England is going to be to Maranello, not to Switzerland then Germany
Newey's going sailing ...
He's due to take delivery of a new 90' Oyster sometime this year.
I agree, he wouldn’t make that purchase without a plan to sail the world.
This is the biggest non sense i saw today. Why a man like newey would try to break his contract just so he can have a vacation? he is just 65 yo. his brain needs things to do and if you read his book you will understand this.
You hope
Going sailing to the Amalfi Coast. Then after a little R&R, up to Maranello! ;-)
Why are the journalists allowed to know the name Fiona, yet they keep it hidden for the public?
Skysports and several other news outlets are saying by him now solely working on the Red Bull Hypercar this will be his gardening leave & he will definitely be able to join another team after after the first quarter of next year, he will certainly be with another team for the start of 2026.
exactly my interpretation of the news as well.
Newey wanted anything but to take away from the anniversary of Senna's death. IMO This is 100% Horner timing this news to do exactly that. What a world class c^t!
*Newey is on the record stating he didn't want this timing. I find it hard to believe he then accidentally backed into the same day.
Hamilton and Newey news are the best thing so far in F1 2025
Will really come to fruition in the change of rules in 2026... Would not surprise me if Max decides to leave, horner is toxic..
Not a coincidence that Alonsos best results have come after teaming up with Lance stroll , Alonso really benifited from lances technical dominance with understanding the car and finding the optimal setup , Newey said stroll deserves credit for 21/22 RB and didn't get it ,Newey clearly unhappy wants to work with stroll and why wouldnt he ,
I think working with Stroll would be any engineer or designer's dream.
Newey has said he wants a "new challenge" - that doesn't mean retirement to me. My bet is a TW&T (Tues/Weds/Thurs) role at Ferrari or a consultancy role with plenty of freedom. He'll have road supercars, WEC programme and F1 to dig his teeth into.
Could say the same for Aston all whilst being able to stop in the UK as his wife wants to
@@leecarroll4776 Stroll's proved that AMF1 isnt a serious organisation. Their road car division is haemorrhaging and their 2026+ outlook doesn't look great once Alonso retires.
@@motornaut Maybe that is the "challenge" that we wants, if he can rein in all sportcars divisions as an consultant, as you say ?! Who know´s...
Did Red Bull (or Newey) say he is leaving "in the first quarter of 2025" or "leaving in 12 months?" "May" was mentioned in this video. The first quarter includes January, February and March, not May or even April. Did the announcement include the mention of "gardening leave" which you talked about? My expectation is that with enough negotiation and monetary compensation just about anything is possible, including no (or very little) gardening leave.
I think these details are not clear yet
My theory (and it is based on past work experience not factual knowledge of this situation) is that this was a classic PR/Spin announcement. This announcement makes things seem clean and clear. Behind the scenes there was probably a huge negotiation involving lawyers, etc....
First quarter in UK is March - May mate
@@timoooo7320 Yes, but people talk like things are set in concrete.
@@senanur1983 The Office for National Statistics (UK) says the quarters are Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep and Oct-Dec. Maybe you're thinking of some sort of fiscal year or other.
I wonder whether working on the Hypercar is part of his negotiations with Red Bull and them allowing him to leave in May '25 and potentially move straight to a competitor. I imagine a 'Newey Designed Car' was in all the marketing brochures to prospective buyers and was the appeal for people to invest. If he just stopped working and went on a full gardening leave today, I imagine a lot of those buyers may pull their deposit. At £5m each, that's a huge problem to have.
He accounced his resignation on the first if May. Think about it people.
Senna's last car was a Newey car.
Senna left us on the first of May.
Newey had built a nice 885 Oyster sailboat. You don't order such an expensive yacht to not use it... could it be he wants to sail the world? I would.
How about in the Mediterranean?
@@djoetma;)
🤷 he literally has a daughter who loves boats and he owns like 3 other boats so yeah he orders it to use it for the family especially his wife who often posts with their boats. Also it's pretty much clear just like the Adrian news that he is going to Ferrari
@@djoetma Amalfi Coast? Then head over to Maranello after that gets old? ;-)
I dont think he can sail that thing alone...
He's obviously a very talented designer, but he was at other teams during the Ferrari and Mercedes dominant periods too
Working on RB hyper car! He is leaving F1 team but not Red Bull. Amazing that no one reads correctly
He's finishing up work on the hypercar over the next few months.
@@IanHobday and where does it say that, point me to the part in RB statement, thanks
Its no one else problem that you can't read........you're on other channels arguing the samething.........the guy is leaving redbull the 1st quarter of 2025 its not difficult.....jeeeze
@@andrehoward5130 not arguing nothing, simply stating that there is difference between leaving the F1RB team to join RB hyper car design team and leaving RB altogether. If cannot see that, then I cannot help you
Q1 of next year he is long gone pal 😂
7:50 does his gardening period really start when he leaves? Some reports out there saying it’s 1 year starting now before he even leaves? Anything beyond Q1 2025 simply makes no sense going to another team as 2026 direction will have alreadly started & well underway. The best Newey value comes from new regs eras from the very start, not adjusting or changing your current concept.
Q1 of 25 and he's a free man it seems
People need to realize that Newye is the single most important figure in F1 history above any driver ever. Remember, without a fast car, no driver will be successful no matter how skilled the driver might me.
While I think Newey is the most successful individual in the history of the sport (and I’m bummed for RB) if he retires the grid is going to close up the way everyone wanted with these regs.
And this is not a good thing ?
big smile on Jos' face
It’s either retirement or Aston Martin. Ferrari threw their entire organization at Newey in 2014 and turned it down because he didn’t want to leave home and family. Aston Martin would be plug and play for him.
It's Ferrari, don't fool yourself.
@@jkbzz bet you said that in 1999 and 2014 too
Ferrari cars are garbage. They are overhyped... just mythos and marketing
I'd be highly surprised if RB insisted on him sitting out till 2027. For a guy that was a part of RB for 20 years and brought them 8 titles I'd assume they'd be cooperative in the negotiations....
lawVs's ladder: Dammit, I want to sleep!
IOW, the departure rumor was both overstated and technically correct. He'll be fully involved in development of the 2025 credit, will still be associated with the Red Bull organization, but will transition to the Hypercar project. No big gain for another team, no gardening leave, and it was already stated that he was more involved in the chassis than the aerodynamics. I think we'll find that he has built and trained a design team which will be fine without him. Mentorship of the next generation of talent is also a massive legacy.
false reporting. He won't have a gardening leave. By leaving now away from the F1 team this year until Q1 of 2025 will effectively be the gardening leave. He'll be free to work for rivals in 2025
Aston Martin for sure
The fact it has now emerged "friend & manager" Eddie Jordan is involved, you could be just right...
He won't be able to work with another F1 team for a couple years
@@_Ben4810 That team has nothing to do with Jordan anymore.
@madeovstarstuff True. Gardening leave for 2025 and then in 2026 he could work somewhere on the 2027 car.
No way you gus thought this was unimaginable
He's already given them next year's car!
I can't see him going to Aston Martin with Stroll junior still underperforming. It means that team will never win a constructor's title with it's current driver lineup
The biggest compliment is this is actually sad but good news for a predictable, stagnant F1 sport. Newey is clearly a genius and, while we will miss your cars, it gives the others a chance 😂
Another blockbuster move by big teams for Adrian Newey. A king ransom deal.
Sky said no garden leave so means he can join team 25
Just confirmed, no gardening leave for Adrian. The question is, will he be inspired to continue in F1 and if so, which team would be his preference?
Ferrari, fairly certain of that.......reviving Ferrari into title contending status is probably the only remaining challenge for a genius like Newey...
It takes a team to build and develop a car Adrian is just a cog in the wheel
Horner made those comments that angered Newey's wife long before he came under investigation for inappropriate behavior. Newey was already doing less with the design of the Formula 1 car at that point.
If they had really wanted to keep Newey, they wouldn't have reduced his role in the design of the Formula 1 car
Exactly.
Horner is vile
@@t.d6379 As any top level manager should be. How will you achieve what one calls success if you are playing nice and making way for others?
There is no chance in H-LL they can keep him at gardening leave until 2027. PROBABLY, he can start working with another team 12 months from TODAY (May 2025), or 12 months after he stopps working on the F1car. The non-compete should be related to F1designs, not sports car designs.
Check the law! More than 12 months is not enforceable. And US is soon getting rid off it alltogether...
Is he leaving Red bull or just red bull F1??
What's next for Red Bull? Probably the midfield.
They will lose Verstappen next

The end of the Red Bull era
Man U did survive Eric C leaving but they have not survived fergie leaving !!!! Newey is a fergie level goat 🐐 he cannot be replaced especially in a ground effect era
When newey saw they're engine for 2026, its a no brainer to exit. Haha
Off to Ferrari to work with Hamilton, crossing two things off his bucket list.
He never mentioned working with Ham as a 'hight' of his career!!! lol. You know designers maybe have a very minimal relationship with drivers!
@@ebdo7863 He specifically called out not having been able to work with ALO, HAM, or Ferrari as career regrets. Moving to Ferrari would check off two of those things. Love them or hate them, Ferrari still defines F1.
He is staying with RB in a different division.
Adrian will be available to work on the 2026 cars for some team. Mark my words. Then be retired in 2030
Although all the campaigning from the British Media that Newey is heading to Ferrari, I actually believe he's retiring. That would explain being a Consultant in Red Bull's last cars.
I guess the tifosi and the Italian media thinks the idea of Newey at Ferrari is a very bad idea?
Or are you referring to British Ferrari fans?
@@Karma2Babylon British Media dominates the F1 Paddock. As being the information sources of plenty outlets.
NO GARDENING LEAVE FOR NEWEY.
Big hit to Redbull but it is a bit too much attention and importance on Newey, he did not design the whole car and it kinda minimise the competency and capability of the people behind him. He may retire or go elsewhere and if the 120Million Ferrari offer is true then that is a bit idiotic, he cannot build a car and win championship on his own.
Redbull is a well oiled machine, from the pit-crew, strategist and management, one man leaving will affect the team but I bet the people behind him are ready and learned from him a lot.
Hamilton knew when he moved to Mercedes, and he knew when moving to Ferrari. Newey to Ferrari, book it.
Even if Newey was to join Ferrari it would be the 2027 car at the earliest so unlikely Hamilton will ever be driving a Newey designed Ferrari.
Age against him it seems
There is no evidence that Newey and Horner have a strained relationship. Is it possible that he is just ready to retire?
Why negotiate gardening leave
he will join after he quit redbull there is no gardening leave time. LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO
How odd that Bryn Lucas looks so much like David Walliams... I've found a glitch in the matrix 😬😜
Doesn't look like him at all... Could be Toto Wolff's illegitimate son thought...
Gardening's period begins today, Newey is no longer linked to Oracle Red Bull F1 Racing. It is more than clear that his new challenge will be to work on the Ferrari of 2026
I'd put money on Verstappen leaving next.
If Newey wants to leave the Red Bull fold sooner, he should raise a complaint against Horner then wait to be sacked. Just like they did with that female whistleblower….
Max Marko and Horner are destroying F1 daily.
Yeh start from scratch after each race Lol
