  • After days of mounting reports, Red Bull finally confirmed on May 1st that Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey, their legendary chief designer and technical guru, will leave the team in the first quarter of 2025, after 19 years with the team. Adrian will be taking a step back from his role within the F1 team until then to develop their RB17 Hypercar instead.
Joining Bryn Lucas is Autosport’s Editor Haydn Cobb, to discuss the timelines that led to Newey’s announced departure as well as his exit plan with the team, as well as his future, with Ferrari and Aston Martin both reportedly keen to take on his services as the sport enters a critical development period, with the 2026 technical regulation change looming over the horizon.

As much as I admired the masterful work Newey has done at Red Bull, his success has also been because of the support and resources Red Bull provided him to succeed. But, after this long Newey is part of the Red Bull family, and just like a real family, do you up and turn your back on them rather than help resolvable the conflict and walk away? As a family man and business owner, I don’t have a lot of respect for that mindset. Of course, since he is 65, how many more years will he be doing this anyway, so moving on without him is would have been inevitable in the next few years.

@993mike lay off the rum. 1. Newey has had success before redbull and will have it after.

Eras come an end and this is part of life. As a RedBull fan I wish him nothing but the best.
I refuse to spoil his departure with speculations that are unfounded.
I don't think Newey leaves because of the drama of behind the scenes because that's not a new thing he's been in the sport long enough to deal with such.
Also Chris is a personal friend, so like most headlines is almost never what it appears.
People will speculate but let's just enjoy the fact that he has run a good race.

Did Red Bull (or Newey) say he is leaving "in the first quarter of 2025" or "leaving in 12 months?" "May" was mentioned in this video. The first quarter includes January, February and March, not May or even April. Did the announcement include the mention of "gardening leave" which you talked about? My expectation is that with enough negotiation and monetary compensation just about anything is possible, including no (or very little) gardening leave.

I wonder whether working on the Hypercar is part of his negotiations with Red Bull and them allowing him to leave in May '25 and potentially move straight to a competitor. I imagine a 'Newey Designed Car' was in all the marketing brochures to prospective buyers and was the appeal for people to invest. If he just stopped working and went on a full gardening leave today, I imagine a lot of those buyers may pull their deposit. At £5m each, that's a huge problem to have.

Big hit to Redbull but it is a bit too much attention and importance on Newey, he did not design the whole car and it kinda minimise the competency and capability of the people behind him. He may retire or go elsewhere and if the 120Million Ferrari offer is true then that is a bit idiotic, he cannot build a car and win championship on his own.
Redbull is a well oiled machine, from the pit-crew, strategist and management, one man leaving will affect the team but I bet the people behind him are ready and learned from him a lot.

Hamilton knew when he moved to Mercedes, and he knew when moving to Ferrari. Newey to Ferrari, book it.

Even if Newey was to join Ferrari it would be the 2027 car at the earliest so unlikely Hamilton will ever be driving a Newey designed Ferrari.

There is no evidence that Newey and Horner have a strained relationship. Is it possible that he is just ready to retire?

Gardening's period begins today, Newey is no longer linked to Oracle Red Bull F1 Racing. It is more than clear that his new challenge will be to work on the Ferrari of 2026

If Newey wants to leave the Red Bull fold sooner, he should raise a complaint against Horner then wait to be sacked. Just like they did with that female whistleblower….
