I literally was eating pizza while watching this and decided to put it away to show my bacteria im still in charge. Might finish it later tho
You are breeding the bacteria that make you think that you are still in charge, be careful
Are you sure they didn't make you stop eating?
whoosh
420 likes its a sign
If being in charge doesn't involve eating pizza, I don't want to be in charge.
The saying "you are what you eat" has never been more relevant than in this video.
Lasersniper you don't actually BECOME what you eat though. You just influence what you'll eat later. Rather, you are what you shit, because your diet influences your gut microbiome, which is in your shit
or in some cases you are what someone else poops
Damnit mom was right. ;)
UltraGaivalas Lmao
You are what you breed in your guts
I tried and tested it. I forced my body to avoid junk, killing the craving by just kept having miniscule bite, upgraded to green vegetables, fruits and grains. I lost 10kgs and now I crave for fruits and vegetables, in just a month. This works! 🔥
Hey kurzgesagt,
I’ve been watching your videos for over 5 years now and you don’t know how much these videos help me out... Every single time, and I mean every single time I have episodes of depression or anything of the sort I can always look up to this channel to brighten up my day; So I just wanted to write this to you as a token of gratitude and appreciation at all the great content you post.
but you already know wht you really need is a fecal transplant right?
☺
That's nice, but have you tried eating healthy poop?
@@doggo6517 AHAHAHAHAHA, YOU MADE MY DAY, DUDE
@@doggo6517 😂 @Kingsly😂
This gives the phrase "trust your gut" a whole new meaning.
lmao
"trust your gut feelings" = Bacterias voting for what you eat at dinner.
My gut instinct is to grab a slice of pizza from the fridge.
Nah I'll eat whats best for me xD i must for the better
Ray Venner So that’s what a gut feeling is - gut bacteria telling you that what they can gleam from your nerves is worthy of being paid attention to?
Never thought poop donation is a thing
The term "shit up my arse" springs to mind here. Our gut has a lot of sway over the human condition, so utilising the gut flora of a healthier being, or even going as far as to grow a healthy gut microbiome in a lab, could help resolve a lot of our problems. Willpower may also be required, BUT with the influence one's gut has over one's mind, maybe we could actually GROW one's willpower via gut flora transplants?
that's nasty but it helps us
me too
And to think I was just giving it away...
XD
When I started a keto diet, there were a couple of days where I felt depleted. But the most interesting event were the incredibly vivid dreams I had about pasta, bread, sugar etc. I genuinely think that the dying bacteria I was depriving of sugar and carbs were signalling my brain to want those foods.
I would love to hear your experience.
well I don't think it entirely has to do with microbiomes only, as we know it the brain only feeds on carbohydrates (glucose) bread, pasta, etc. So I reckon your body craves carbs because the brain is "starving". However, obviously you wont pass away from not eating carbs. Because when you go into a keto diet and (ultimately your body enters ketosis) you stop consuming carbs so your body cant get glucose to feed the brain as a result keton bodies that are produced in the liver are made and then later transferred into glucose for the brain.
Bread
Basically a keto diet relies on external, consumed fats, which get digested and used up immediately. Carbs are an essential fuel source that spike blood sugar which is useful for getting through exercise heavy activities. Fats quickly burn to release a manageable amount of energy, preventing spikes in glucose. This ketogenic diet is supposedly good for losing weight but, has been proven to be bad for your long term nutrition. Just my 2¢
Microbiome mind control.
@@yallareblind4948 it makes sense for a sedentary lifestyle, ketogenic diet allows up to 50g of carbs per day.

I've often heard that the appetite of the mother during pregnancy affects the food preferences of the child. For example, while my mom had me, she had a big craving for tomatoes. My dad even had to buy a pack of them while she was in the hospital. I personally love both tomatoes and ketchup, even from my childhood. Could this be due to the bacteria and immune system being carried over from my mom?

My gut feeling tells me that the gut can be considered a second brain communicating with our primary brain
Chow Tom I believe that would support the theory that males think with their stomach, and perhaps we may extend it some day to females as well.
So our body is basically two brains working together with a protective exoskeleton
Three brains when you consider that left and right hemispheres are perfectly functional independently when disconnected. In fact when they are disconnected procedurally the left hand will sometimes knock things off the right hand when it disagrees.
Julian Franco You are two. Well, three now.

Some help, others are indifferent. But it’s all an ecosystem. It’s just so amazing to think this is what being a live human being is. I wish others could see through my eyes.
It is very important to understand, but also interesting to realize, that a huge amount of our body and energy goes into enforcing the symbiotic relationship of every cell, bacteria, and non living mechanisms to allow us to live.

An observation at 5:56, it's said that "our microbiome has also been linked to other serious diseases, as autism". Autism isn't a disease (and that was mentioned on the video in the same sentence that included cancer), it's a disability. It's not considered a disease because it's not something to be cured. Autistic people may need more or less support in certain situations, but they also have their own way of being (specific interests, stims, personality) and if no one is being harmed by that, that's okay. I thought it'd be important to mention this, specially as an autistic woman.
I was offended too
I thought the same thing here.
Hello, this comment is two months old but I was a bit curious. So, I just googled about this and a study entitled 'Role of the Gut Microbiome in Autism Spectrum Disorders' conducted by Joby Pulikkan, Agnisrota Mazumder, and Tony Grace (2019) came up. I didn't really digest it properly but from what I can understand, there are reported to be more gastrointestinal problems with people who have autism than with others who have different neurodevelopmental disorders. They present it could be because of the gut-brain axis (like the relationship between the gut and brain; how the health of these parts influence each other), as there is a gut microbiome, it is possible that these microorganisms could contribute to one's mental health. However, don't trust me. I encourage anyone reading this to read the research article yourselves.

I am coming back to this video after reading the chapter about the gut in your book immune. I still adore this video.. In the video it frames the bacteria h
as cute little neighbors who help us Digest nutrients And communicate with our brain for some reason. But in the book it goes a little bit more in depth on how it's a cold war. Basically saying that these bacteria take up space from worse invaders So keeping them in check and inside of your gut is easier than dealing with worse invaders yourself.
Autism is not a "disease". It is simply a different way of thinking. This common but debilitating misconception affects autistic folk like myself in a very personal manner. Diseases are biological - autism is a different way of thinking. For example, autistic people who can't speak don't have vocal abilities because their brain simply isn't vocally wired the way a neurotypical person's brain is, not because of some voice box rot. I love your channel and its exploration of existential questions - my favorites are videos on the possibility of aliens and the Fermi paradox - but I would encourage you to refrain from such misconceptions in the future.
