Astle was the most dangerous batsman in the New-Zealand line up in those days,I grew watching those matches and always praying against India that he would get out early
@@nadeemshah5273 vs pakistan only this innings good and they drop catch also. Other match vs pakistan not good average but vs india good average astle have
I still remember 222 in 168 balls with 11 sixes and 28 fours .Hoggard the bowler and how he got out . Nobody will ever forget that day. He hit boundaries like he had a flight to catch. Every ball almost went for runs.
You have to acknowledge Fleming as well in this clip. 100 run opening stand in 18ish overs. They complemented each other brilliantly when one if them was hitting out, the other fed the strike. Nothing quite like knowing the bloke at the other end is just helping you out.
Indian cricket fans in 90s and 2000s were always afraid of few players.. Astle, Flower brothers of zimbabwe.. I think it was very difficult to take wicket of Andy flower😄
Nathan was a great entertainer great knock super batting against the best of that time Akram waqar n Shoaib with saqlain was a deadly bowling attack miss those days
Few observations: - Shoaib Akhtar was very quick. Lightning quick. At that pace, any delivery that's half decent could cause batsmen a lot of trouble. Don't know if he chucked, but he sure did give it all - Nathan Astle's highest score at the time, 120, came against India at Rajkot in 98 balls (?). NZ managed 349 that day. India scored 376 in the next game at Hyderabad with Sachin scoring 186*. - Can't understand why Astle's strike rate's 72, but then again he struggled to get them away when it wasn't his day. On his day, a double century off 153 deliveries in a Test match wasn't out of reach
Observations about Astle, as I watched a lot of NZ growing up in 2000s. 1. Best square drive. Even of good length balls. He had that trademark jump as welo to stay on top of the bounce. It's why he played McGrath best of all, even better than Tendulkar and Lara and Anwar! 2. Very inconsistent. A fab 100 followed by single digit scores. Check world cup 1996. 3. Underrated bowler. Took a 5 wkt bag against Pakistan once in Mohali, along with 100. Highest 100s for NZ until Taylor overtook.
@@ajinkyamane7004 yes inconsistent but not weak against bounce: career average 37, he averaged 38 overall v Aus and 43 in Aus, yes weak against SA but two centuries in his first series in the WI facing Ambrose, Walsh and Bishop.
Choco Boy Looks ! 😊 Arguably the finest cutter in cricket ball 👌🏻👍 Nathan Astle was right up there for me along the likes of M Waugh , H Gibbs , M Trescothick & S Anwar !
Think Shoaib akthar playing for teams like Australia or south Africa he could bag more than 600 wickets at Odis... Such bad fielding efforts by the Asian teams that time
I am lucky as I have seen 90's era cricket. Real cricket where real competition is there with ball and bat. Where every team we can see the match winner. Even in Zimbabwe there are Health streak Campbell Andy and Grant flower were present.
Remember reading the scoreline and wondering how the fuck can any team other than Australia be able to beat Pak with that star bowling line up chasing more than 280... Answer simple: Endless dropped chances, luck luck and lucky...
Yes, dude. 100%, I will agree. His batting style is very similar to an Indian batsman Virender Sehwag. Nathan Astle is my favourite NZ cricketer. My childhood Kiwi batsman. He left in cricket in 2007. Now, 2024, no one can bat like Nathan Astle. No one can copy his batting style. 👈🏻 Would you agree?
I was at the this game back in my uni days. I was also at the ODI the next year in 2002, Astle also got a 100 in that match against England to win the 5 match series 3-2. Good old days.
Watched it live and was over joyed when Shoaib akhtar dropped him early, theek se yad nahin but I always pretended to be unwell and had an off from the school, this happened atleast 10 times every new year when teams toured Australia and Newzealand😂, greatest days of cricket and our lives late 90s early 2k
Guys..., just watch his 222 out of 150+ balls Vs England test match, chasing 550...., NewZealand finally lost by 90 odd runs....in that chase. Absolutely a treat innings to cricket lovers. It's not wrong to say this player was underrated.....
Astle was very stylish batsmen...with useful part time bowler.. He use to score quick fire 30's 40's..but ws unable to score big runs.. However this was classic innings with lots of luck
Part of that is because for much of his career the wickets were quite green in NZ. Stephen Flemings test batting record in NZ was only higher than in Australia, he scored higher in every other country. Naturally players normally score higher at home, so it indicates that it could be pretty difficult. Albeit I think they were less green in ODIs. They're not green at all now, it's the same as overseas, I think this is part of the reason NZ players averages have raised and why they're now more accustomed to overseas conditions.
During his playing days Astle always castle out opposition players with his masterclass batting. A complete batsman with good technique.temparement, style and dangerous of his era
Well after seeing such hammering Viru before making a full-time comeback in the team must have seen Nathan Astle's bravado kinda hitting he must have said to himself that ke he is gonna put a show like this one or a better one that noone ever will be not be able to forget & that is exactly he did against the NZ team by crashing a century up in this fashion but had some orthodox cricketing shots too.
One of my favourite batsman.

Look at the bowling lineup wasim, waqar, shoaib, azhar, razzaq, afridi, all legends yet Astle made them high school bowler, superb
poor fielding costs them. 3 drop catches and one inside edge. Astle was just lucky on that day
