Oh my, it's hard to argue with the choices of Larry Young & Henry Laskau - but no Ron Laird! I mean, really, Ron Laird was the poster boy of USA race walking for years: long article on him in Sports Illustrated; a 60 Minutes segment on him, battling with the Russians in those golden USA/Russia duel meets during the Cold War ( the great USA runner George Young gets a nod here in that regard - sadly he died recently died). As great as your 4 choices were, only Henry Laskau could match Ron Laird in terms of awareness among the general public about race walking. I think Ron should have gotten an honorable mention for at least giving race walking a much higher profile among "the masses" than it has had since then.
Did u watch the video where we discussed it? Ron was highlighted, but the goat was determined by vote and if ibrecall he got the least votes. I agree he raised race walking profile, but IMHO it's hard to argue that two bronze medals at the Olympics doesn't also raise the profile. This of course is what makes the conversation so interesting
🎉🎉🎉oooh Sassy!! I think everyone is a GOAT because I am in awe of all race walkers!! ❤❤❤
Can't argue with that!
