Red Allison had an excellent rookie year and then a cheapshot knee on knee hit by Trottier ruined his knee and Allison was never the same player. He evolved into a checker but as a rookie scored 64 points as a healthy player.
@Eilliw Nodrog Very Wrong, This is a big whopper! Ray Allison was drafted by the Whalers after playing with Brian Propp, Laurie Boschman, and Brad McCrimmon with Brandon. The line of Propp, Allison, and Boschman was awesome in the WHL in 1978/79. They were all first round picks as was Brad McCrimmon a defenseman. Later Allison was traded to the Flyers and never amounted to what he did in Junior. He sucked in Hartford and had one good year and one decent year in Philly. Mike Red Allison was drafted by the Rangers in 1980 out of Sudbury in the OHL in the second round. He was a surprise making the Rangers as a 19 year old in 1980 and scored in his first game in Boston. The Rangers got killed 7-2 but Red scored from Phil Esposito. I can still see ole number 14 Red Allison with the Rangers. He set a Ranger rookie scoring mark with 64 points later broken by Mark Pavelich and appeared to be a solid physical checking/scoring center. As I wrote the next year Bryan Trottier hit him a cheap knee on knee hit and ruined his knee and Allison was never the same. He evolved into a 3rd and 4th line checking center who killed penalties and played physical hockey. The poor guy was always injured as a Ranger! His older Brother Dave Allison was a goon defenseman who had seasons of over 300 penalty minutes in the AHL and later briefly coached the Ottawa Senators. Mike Red Allison was a center and was the younger Brother of Dave Allison. They had NOTHING to do with Ray Allison a right winger? Very bad!
haha thanks for the correction. I can't believe I did that! I used to play at a rink in St. Louis called "Matteson Square Garden" and that must have crept into my mind. I'll fix it when I get the time!
