The melody for Lucid Dreams is a LITERAL SAMPLE of Sting’s 1993 hit: Shape of My Heart. Sting owns 85% of the rights to Lucid Dreams. Juice WRLD physically used the melody from another song, and did his own thing on top of it. Artists do it all the time. Yellowcard did it too. They need to get over themselves
@@kaywee4200 He definitely should. Sting said that Lucid Dreams was his favorite rendition of that melody. And that was before Juice Wrld died. Yellowcard knows this, they’re just desperate for money since they haven’t been relevant since 2003.
Drew looks like he’s on the verge of passing out throughout the whole video Edit: tell me why I only got ONE notification from this comment wtf anyways I just wanna add, I WAS READY TO SEE THIS MAN DROP !!
Fuck any artist that tries to sue another for "similar" sounding songs. We've been making music since we learned to use tools, it is IMPOSSIBLE to be purely "original" at this point
and yet plenty of people make music every day that doesn’t sound similar enough to that of a world famous band they almost definitely listened to to get them sued. bear in mind Yellowcard has a very good legal team, and if their legal team thought that this was not a valid, viable case, they would never have initiated the lawsuit. the lawyers of a band that’s been famous for over a decade probably know more about how music plagiarism works than you.
Nah, plagiarists exist. Inspiration and immitation are distinct and if someone blatantly lifts something I'm not gonna lose any sleep over them getting a bill. This case does seem like a stretch though.
@@gothboithickWhat do lawyers know about music? All they know is that sometimes these cases go in the plaintiff's favor, and after the Blurred Lines lawsuit they likely felt more confident in winning these kinds of cases. It's weird for you to say that the lawyer must've had a good reason to sue since he's a lawyer, but this lawsuit would've never went their way with a competent jury.
Roody Call it’s frustrating as hell. Like yes I understand stealing lyrics because that can be blatantly obvious but god I want to smack the hell out of people who sue others left and right for “stealing” their song because it sounds similar when in reality it just has the same key or whatever.
It's not him being dead that makes it egregious. It's what they're suing over. If Juice whirl had actually done something to seriously profit off their work, it would be understandable for them to still want to be made whole. Otherwise, by your logic, I can rob as many people as I want as long as I die before anyone can take it back, then all that money should go to anyone I want to leave it to.
how the case is gonna go now: yellowcard's lawyer: were you familiar with the band yellowcard? juice wrld: *is dead* yellowcard's lawyer: how about the song "holly wood died?" juice wrld: *continues being dead* yellowcard's lawyer: i rest my case your honor
Sunburned Albino that sounds hella sad. Music is the best. And just don’t rip them off lol it’d be the same as if you didn’t listen bc you could come up with something on your own that matches someone else’s but you did it on your own. Jeez listen to music man lmao. The Internet is a great band to get into.
So weird that Drew got “a strangely strong flu” around the same time my whole office did. And this was right before COVID. I don’t think that’s a coincidence lol
the yellow card melody in the beginning is literally “mi do re mi do do so fa mi do re” and the juice wrld is “mi do mi re do do so fa mi do re do” . any melody that only uses the first 5 notes of the scale is gonna be similar but the big similarities are literally just regular music theory tricks to making good songs, like staying on the triad or walking down the scale
this video is like 2 years old but I really appreciate Drew’s ability to recognize that something he once really cared about no longer deserves his respect. i think most people have experienced the blinders you get from fanaticism and i hope if my favorite bands ever do something scummy I’ll be willing to see it for what it is.
Dying doesn’t absolve you of all the things you’ve done if your life. It sucks he died. But if the judge finds them entitled to compensation, then that’s their money.
dean I mean we don’t know that. There is precedence for artists winning similar cases. I, personally, don’t think they sound similar enough to merit compensation. But you never know with the courts 🤷🏼♂️
Good news everyone! Yellowcard ultimately dropped the lawsuit against Juice WRLD's estate. Bad news is they're still gross and reading more details about the case made me even angrier. Yellowcard was pursuing a $15 million dollar amount, as well as royalties to the song "Lucid Dreams." From what I read, the $15 million amount was excluding additional damage that Yellowcard wanted to pursue. Those additional damages would have been from Juice WRLD's concerts and appearances because they alleged that the song effectively launched his career. While that's likely true, the implied reasoning behind all this is that, to some extent, Yellowcard alleged that _their melody_ and thus _they_ had launched Juice WRLD's career and thus deserved a slice of his success. Absolute leeches. Disgusting.
That drughead soundcloud rapper was sued by Sting for the same song, lost, and he's paying him royalties from his grave. Where's your criticism of Sting?
@@gigiizzy5651 Sort of a strange non sequitur retort to OP's comment. The fact that other people have done similar things or worse is not exactly a defense of Yellowcard. Whataboutism doesn't really help anyone. I don't know if OP in this case knew about what you're saying, but I sure didn't. Knowing this new information doesn't make me dislike what Yellowcard did any less. It just makes me dislike Sting in the same way.
@@gigiizzy5651Sting didn't sue him. He owns 85% of the track due to the interpolation used but this was an amount that was negotiated and agreed upon by both parties.
Being broken up has nothing to do with the fact that someone could be making money off of a song that they feel is a rip off of theirs. Royalties are a big part of financial stability in the music industry. Even tho Juice is dead his estate will still make money off that song, and Yellowcard doesn't want someone making money off something they feel they wrote first.
It makes sense when you're a broke megalomaniac. They're willing to sell their own legacy for what amounts to $150K, max, once the lawyers are paid and it's split between the writers of the song.
@@KIager Except, after the case is settled royalties made in the future are split. And if they win, their image remains intact because they would therefore find Juice guilty of copyright infringement. So in the grand scheme of things, it only benefits Yellowcard more to continue.
Wow, what do I see? Someone who is willing to critically examine their favorite artists and did not hesitate to drop them when they did something terrible despite being a longtime fan??? Can we have more people like Drew in the world?
If you look at the history of most artists they will have done something janky in their past, for instance John Lennon was a wife beater. I mean don't get me wrong the principle is great it's just if you only consumed art made by the virtuous then there wouldn't be much left worth consuming.
Artists need to learn that there’s only so many melodies that can be created and eventually you’re gonna have one that sounds similar to one you’ve done before and that doesn’t mean they stole it!
I think most of them who try this shit actually know that already, they just also know that they might get away with their bullshitery and get money for it
The melody and keys are insanely similar. There are many variants that can be used in an intellectually diverse way. This was straight theft and nothing more. To capitalize on another persons work is no different than people complaining about how you can screenshot someone else’s post and get more upvotes for it. Imagine working on something for months, if not years and having someone make free money, using next to no work to do so. It’d be frustrating. Yes he died and, as he said, they postponed the lawsuit. I’m sure the lawyer then assured them that they are not actually suing the family and/or the deceased but much rather the estate earned off of the capitalization of a stolen idea.
kenny the simplistic nature of the melody is deeper than just the key tone and melody. The legato and staccatos of the vocal notes are similar. The notes are similar just in different octaves. There are many forms of drum patterns that are used in songs but the application is used differently. The 4/4 structure is the most common so anything used in that structure can mesh well with other songs. That’s true. The issue here is it’s a replication of the song. If it was a parody then things would be different but this was a song introduced as an original when, in fact, it was not. Bo Burnham covers this topic extensively in his comedy. Music is introduced as an original, all the time, when in fact it is a repetition of the same subject matter that is already in place as popular music. I understand what you say to an extent but there was much more that could have been done to improve the structure of the song but this was not the case. It’s like the whole Vanilla Ice ordeal where he claims he added an extra note to improve the song. That’s not how intellectual work is made. There needs to be a vast improvement upon the original to claim a difference when, in this case and others, that is not the case.
@@valkyrie7304 Oh gosh, that was in his first few months, before he blew up on yt. There was this a video of "math proves this is the best way to cut a bagel" or something and it is utterly stupid, so naturally Drew made a video three times as long as the original one to complain about it.

*ATTENTION: IMPORTANT UPDATE* Yellowcard has dropped their lawsuit against Juice WRLD. A NYT article states that the case was quietly dropped without any settlement or changes to the credits. This could have been due to the appointment of Juice WRLD's mother as the representative of his personal estate. NOTE: It is possible that the lawsuit could be filed again. For now, though, it seems that the coast is clear.
I'm guessing the lawyers told yellowcard "This is probably not going to be a win, but we can still try" and then and ONLY then, yellow card dropped the suit.
They just realized they were getting shit publicity for it and it would have cost them more to go through with the lawsuit. Too late for them tho, the damage is done.
Zac Oh definitely!! If I had this kind of platform and I could play that well, I would totally try to release something. That’s just me though lol. He seems to know what he’s doing

I really admire how raw and logical drew is at explaining events and proving his point in arguments happening in real time. His choice of words are wise and professional while still maintaining the slight comedic edge that his channel is all about. Every time he thinks he gets a little too serious he pops in a little joke that completely kills the tone of seriousness and suspense. And that is why drew is a good comedic personality on RUclips and he uses his downfalls (e.g. his flu virus) as another joke that runs throughout the whole video in the background, referencing it every two or so minutes. I absolutely love this kind of content, but my limited vocabulary restricts me from expressing my true love for Drew's comedic and relatable take on real life events. Please do more ranting videos like these in the future. 💚
Here are some fancy words: Defenestration (DE-fen-a-STRA-shun) The act of throwing a person or object out of a window Jentacular (jen-TAC-u-lar) A description of a food or drink eaten before breakfast (this one is super obscure) Pneumonoultramicroscopicsiliconovolcanoconiosis (look up a video on how to pronounce it) A lung disease and the 2nd longest word in English. The longest is 180,000 letters long Edit: Pneumonoultramicroscopicsiloconovolcanoconiosis is actually the *third* longest, with second being the full name of E. Coli. The full name of E. Coli is 1909 letters long and the longest word ever published. The first is the full name of the chemical compound titin.
@@MrShifty1 That depends on how you define a word. Most lexicographers do not define a chemical formulae as an English word because they literally just combine all that the compound consists of. It is why the chemical titin is not actually used in any English language dictionary.

Artists need to learn that there’s only so many melodies that can be created and eventually you’re gonna have one that sounds similar to one you’ve done before and that doesn’t mean they stole it!
Thank you for finally saying this. Music has been around for god knows how long eventually singers and writers are gonna accidentally copy a beat

Edit: Pneumonoultramicroscopicsiloconovolcanoconiosis is actually the *third* longest, with second being the full name of E.
@JellyBabie1984 Then the longest word is Antidisestablishmentarianism (ANT-ee-diss-ES-TAB-lish-men-TEAR-ee-A-nis-im)
If i were half as good as explaining my thoughts as Drew was... well i dunno... but my life would be so different. Half the bad stuff thats happened in my life was in some part due to either a lack of or misunderstood/poor communication and it always bugs me because i know if people could have my thoughts for a moment, theyd understand what i do (and i them hopefully) and itd be so much easier to communicate.
Ah well, i guess im ok with leaving snarky and sarcastic replies to stupid comments that i find around youtube (i dont mean this one, btw). At least that makes ME happy 😅
@@JellyBabie1984 ok but by that logic... the poster above me said antidisestablishmentarianism is the longest... but you can break that into all its parts anyway...
Anti
Dis-
Establish(ment)
Arian
Ism
Those are all phonetic segments that function with a number of words to modify their meaning within their relevant contexts. That is, we know if i say theyre a vegetarian, that they are a person that eats vegetables. Or a librarian is a person who works in a library.
So why does antidisestablishmentarianism get a free pass for longest word, but pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis does not?
I say the lexicographers can suck a fat one. A words a words a word, and pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is a real thing that we refer to BY use of that letter combination. So i say its a word.
That and im sick of antidisestablishmentarianism coming up as the longest word when its kind of its own redundancy (anti + dis isnt something we generally do with language cause they cancel out) and... has anyone said it in the last 25 years and NOT been having the exact same conversation were having now? Its such a useless, shitty word... and everyone always looks so smug when they say it, as if they think "ooh look how smart i am for using it" when EVERYONE already knows it and they never use it aside from to say they know it, lol...

Juice loved these type of bands, Escape the Fate when Ronnie was in the band was one of his favourites, even tweeted lyrics from songs on Dying Is Your Latest Fashion which was released around that same time.
