  • In this video, I discuss 4 options that you have to make sure your overdrive on your automatic (46rh) transmission works when you need it to. I do not dive into other issues that can affect overdrive such as crank position sensor, vehicle speed sensor, speedometer, and ASD relay.

      I did the TPS delete kit for now. It is really nice how you can adjust when it shifts, right now I have it tuned for racing. It shifts around 2300 rpm if you take it easy, but if your going full send it shifts a bit earlier. My D250 was bone stock and now it has a fuel pin, governor spring, 3 turns in on the power screw, adjusted timing, and a BHAF air filter, so it makes 24psi of boost in overdrive full throttle. I don’t want to push it more than that with the automatic.

    Also if you've tried the tps, but have no speedo or odometer and have changed your speed sensor make sure the speed sensor gear is engaging on the tail shaft splines. If you look at the housing where the sensor connects to you'll notice the shaft is not centered on the housing it is offset and it has different retaining clip grooves on the housing you need to make sure A) your sensor works easy remove sensor leaving housing in the tail shaft get a drill turn key to on dont start engine and spin away if speedo works your good if not well change sensor test again if still not working you have deeper issues and need to start checking wiring and connectors or pcm is bad, B) clock housing until the gear contacts tail shaft splines and install sensor and test drive. If tps is adjusted right and speedo is working O/D should engage around 40 with part throttle if your full throttle it should hold in 3rd until you let off. I figured this out after 7hrs of tearing apart the wire harness and testing things.

      Any reason that I would be losing transmission fluid as a result of this problem? Transmission rebuild twice... TPS adjusted to 1.0V-3.8V... Fuel pump rebuilt...
      Symptoms: Intermittent OD, works sometimes only when fluid is low... intermittent speedometer malfunction (not often)... Pulsing headlights... Transmission fluid needs topping off between 500-1500 miles depending on conditions... no burning of fluid, just evaporation.

Worked for a while and then went to crap again. When I put the rebuilt VE pump on, I also replaced the 3 wire harness that connects into the TPS and checked that all the wire integrity was good. Still the dam thing wont shift into overdrive until about 65mph. I rarely even drive that fast! haha. Tomorrow I am going to do exactly what you did in this vid and hope for good results. You can do the momentary push button on a relay loop that is broken when the brake pedal is pushed. That takes the forget out of the equation for unlock but puts the remember part on the OD lockout side. Your reminder there is that it never went to OD. If there was a 3rd gear pressure port to tap in to you could make it all based on 3rd gear pressure and brake pedal.

    • @decentgarage

      The problem with this setup is if you are running 80 on the freeway and have to tap the brakes you'll drop out of od and rpms will sky rocket

    Hey Decent Garage, fello Utah first gen owner here. Great video as always! Just wanted to add one thing with the tps senor. One issue that was causing overdrive on my truck to not engage was not that it was out of adjustment, but rather giving the wrong voltage at about 1/3rd throttle. So watch carefully with your multimeter that there are no voltage spikes.

    if you have a 91.5+, you MUST check your low temperature coolant switch located drivers side under the intake nearest the brake booster on the block.. it kills the whole loop if that sensor is bad, same as the transmission over temperature switch.

    Tim, Great info. Right before I started my conversion. I had an issue with my TPS. Luckily bought a new 1 from MOPAR. But thanks to you I'll know how to properly set it up. I am curious though. Can you do a follow-up to this vid involving passing gear. I had my trans rebuilt not to long before. But during my tear down I noticed that the trans shop had installed a spring on both ends of my passing cable. I had been having issues with since the rebuild. Thought It had been tied to the TPS. But seeing the springs kinda bothered me and I'm sure it wasn't "Factree" Curious how your trans acts now that you re-installed your TPS. Depends huh ;) That's a pretty cool sponser.........Thumbs Up !

    • @nickmiller9537

      people have no idea how to build transmissions anymore, and the springs are sometimes put there including extra spacers and nuts (nuts) to build pressure because the rebuild was as successful as a condom with holes in it..

  • @tobylou8
    @tobylou8 3 года назад +1

    I did the adjustment on my 91.5 this afternoon. The nut and plastic piece had to be removed and cleaned it was so tight, it couldn't be adjusted. When I got that straight, the volts at idle were 0.44!! WOT was 4.98!! So I adjusted idle to 1.00 with no problems. WOT is still at 4.98!! The transmission shifts into O/D at 40 if my foot isn't in the pedal. If I keep my foot in it, it won't shift until 60. Any speed over 40 and I let off just a bit, it goes into O/D and so far, stays there. I'm taking a longer trip this afternoon so I'll see if it stays in O/D at 70!! Any thoughts on 4.98 volts at WOT?? Thanks! ALWAYS enjoy your material and it DEPENDS on nothing but great material!! ;-)

    • @decentgarage
      @decentgarage  3 года назад +1

      I've had a few people ask me about the nut being stuck and not adjusting. How did you remove it to clean it?

    • @tobylou8
      @tobylou8 3 года назад

      @@decentgarage I removed the two Allen cap screws that hold the sensor to the sensor frame so the nut and plastic adjuster piece could be removed. I then took an 8mm for the bolt and 10mm for the plastic adjuster piece and s-l-o-w-l-y worked them loose being careful to not crack the plastic adjuster. Once they were loose, I removed the bolt completely, then ran it back in all the way several times until it would move easily once reassembled. I was careful to put it back with the long adjuster tab being positioned where it was when I removed it. Adjusting was much easier then. In my opinion, it seems that the reason these go out is because they do not get adjusted periodically and at WOT with volts above 3.25-3.80, the resistance builds up, they get hot, brittle and fail. Combine that with all the "wonderful" Mopar electronics... LOL. A weird perk is that now that my idle volt reading is 1.00, my lights no longer flicker at idle!! Carquest now offers the sensor with a limited lifetime warranty. TPStool.com offers a tool that hooks to the sensor and allows testing and adjustment. If I was a mechanic, I would buy it. I may just buy the generic pig-tail. Thanks for all your hard work with these videos.

    My 1993 Cummins downshifts from overdrive into 3rd gear and when it does the speedometer bounces around very erratically. In fact if it’s driving fine at highway speed and all a sudden I notice the Speedo starts bouncing around like crazy the next thing that happens is the overdrive issue. It’s like an erratic speedometer is predicting the downshift issues from overdrive into 3rd gear. I tried adjusting the TPS, but it’s still happening.

    Hey man I've got the newer transmission in my 93 so I just put 2 switches in it after seeing your video with the white truck. This video has made me think about something. First. Can I have the transmission hooked up and shifting all the gears and I just have 1 switch for lock up? Second question. My dad has a 93 with a brand new transmission and overdrive. The mechanic says he can't get the overdrive to work because the speedometer doesn't work and he can't find one to go in the truck. Can the speedometer not working keep it from going into overdrive? Thanks oh yeah I fixed the problem with my lights getting bright and dim. It was the ground going from the battery to the core surport. Idk about dad's it's still in the shop.

    • @decentgarage
      @decentgarage  3 года назад

      Great question. If your truck has a TPS and has a 47rh, you can definitely run overdrive off of the TPS and put lockup on a switch. The reason I ran them both on a switch on the white truck is because even after adjusting the TPS correctly it still would not shift in and out of OD.

    • @decentgarage
      @decentgarage  3 года назад

      Sorry I forgot to address the question about your father's truck. A non-working speedo will 100% affect OD working or not. The speedo has to be working for OD to work correctly. However, i'm actually not sure if you can bypass that issue but putting OD on a switch and having it work despite the speedo not working.

      @@decentgarage okay thanks! Yeah putting my dad's on a switch is definitely a no go. He needs something to do it itself right or a standard. Thanks again I was hoping we could do that bypass for the tps and be okay but maybe we can get a speedometer cluster.

    • @decentgarage
      @decentgarage  3 года назад

      I must have confused that with the 47rh. So if you leave it in and slow down it will downshift to second? If you speed back up does it automatically switch in to od again at some point? Seems like that would burn up the overdrive unit.

Everything is done super clean on it and it a got a newer 6spd (not a 5spd) manual in it. They completely rebuilt the motor 8k miles on it and put a smaller turbo on it for more boost. The interior was completely done also. It’s 4x4 and comes fully painted and big winch up front mounted on a custom front push guard. He’s asking 38k for you. Thoughts?

It will not shift into overdrive at all we have adjusted the TPS and are getting a low voltage reading the most voltage that we are seeing is 0.24v at full throttle and 0.12v at idle. I understand these are very low readings does this mean the TPS is garbage? Also it has a factory tachometer and is not working if these trucks came with the factory tachometer, do they need to be working in order for it to kick into overdrive? Any info helps!

      Interesting. Do you have working AC. If not I would suspect that your crank position sensor is back. CPS sends a signal to the ECM to control OD, AC, and tach. You've mentioned 2/3 that aren't working.

      This is not true. The true statement is "don't tow in overdrive under significant load based on transmission temperatures".
