  • Every little boy wants to be like his dad. But when Luke Stewart tried to copy his dad's new bagpiping hobby, no one expected he'd be this good at it.

      Yes, when you're at The World's in Glasgow, it's easy to see that there are many talented piper-children, but this is just a local news story. It's certainly not common for 7yo kids to play the pipes at a grade 4 level, at least not in the US. I think the youngest member of our band started PC at 9, and he was ready to compete at 11, and we were all pretty impressed.

      As if being self-taught is somehow not gonna make you good enough? :/!
      Sure, some real-life guided instruction/tips can absolutely help when needed, but this already sounded incredible. There's plenty of evidence that there are self-taught (or at least partially self-taught) musicians that already sound great on their respective instrument. You just have to be musically inclined and have the patients to learn and soke in some knowledge. And a lot of the information you need to learn an instrument is right here on RUclips or other websites; gone are the days where you had to go to an expensive music school or something to learn to play an instrument. This is truly a musical revolution, because learning to play something is no longer limited to wealthy people who could afford an expensive music school or who could hire an instructor for private lessons or whatever; learning to play/make music has truly become more accessible than ever before. This is certainly not to say that this will take away the hours and hours of practice you might need to learn to effectively play your instrument. That time commitment is no less of a requirement than it was before the days of RUclips and the internet.
      And yes, there are people who have RUclips channels dedicated to teaching bagpipes, in particular. Some of these also do "Zoom" or "Skype" meetings if the beginner bagpiper would like one-on-one instruction if needed. We need to step out of the old way of thinking and onward to the new.

      @@nancyirwin3150 This is interesting, I'm actually blind too! Nice to see a fellow visually impaired person on here :)))
      I don't play bagpipes and I don't really have an intention to play them, but they're certainly a very fascinating instrument; how they work is really quite interesting to me. That's an instrument that I've somehow overlooked and forgotten about, but just a few days ago I for some reason decided to learn more about how they work! :))
      Out of curiosity, what's your knowledge on bagpipes like? Do you have an understanding of how they work? There are likely some people who don't entirely understand it. And it can be even harder to understand it when your blind.

One of the other members in my band has a synthetic bannatyne Pipebad which is small instead of a regular. Also Tune is correct term to describe a piece of music on the Pipes instead of song, because songs have lyrics. Tunes are simply pieces of music with no lyrics. Do your research before trying to shoot down someone only to make YOU look like an idiot.

    The little guy needs to wear some ear protection. Piping is a lifelong passion, and the loudness of the GHB, especially indoors or with a band can cause hearing loss over a longer period of time. Keep the pipes up!

    I'm surprised his fingers can cover the holes! He must have huge hands; I couldn't even hold the PC properly until I was at least 10yo... I sure he'll be composing 8-part Strathspeys and singing Canntaireachd by now... He'll certainly be the youngest Pipe Sargeant in EUSPBA 👏👏👏... (Lol, "Traditional garb"... it's a bit much, but it sounds more interesting than "standard issue band uniform"... The "garb" is nice, but it's incidental; the precocious talent is what is rare.)

    Left & right hands of both father and son are reversed -- they will only practice their mistakes as time goes by.

    • @GuyWersh
      @GuyWersh 7 лет назад +2

      Makes no difference. being left handed does NOT promote mistakes. Are these players poor performers because they use this configuration:
      Colin MacLellan
      Alasdair Gillies
      Terry Lee
      Iain Speirs
      Ross Cowan
      Bruce Gandy
      Alan Bevan

      @@GuyWersh if he were left handed he would put his bag in his right arm and have his right arm on the top of the chanter (inverse of regular playing style), no point is being made about left handed people being inferior in any way you imbecile its just that it's clearly poor technique

    • @micregil
      @micregil 5 лет назад +1

      I thought it might be because he couldn't reach around the bag, but it turns out he's just copying his dad, if they're left handed they should get the bags set up to play for left handed, but if the boy is right handed he needs to start holding it the correct way, the sooner the better. Those bad habits will stay with him.

      Some famous pipers played with reversed hands. Look up Pipe Major Donald MacLean of Lewis, he played exactly like that father and son, pipes on left shoulder, right hand on top. Look up St Lawrence O Toole Pipe Band, they're in Grade One and they have a piper that plays like that. True that it's not as common as fully reversed (pipes on right shoulder, right hand on top) but there's no "mistake" about it.

    I've seen it takes very long time before being able to learn bagpipes as first you use a special practicing flute.
