  • Which is the bigger priority for a nontraditional premed-getting your GPA over a 3.0 or crushing the MCAT? How many credits of good grades do you need to show med schools you're ready? Let's answer a question from a student who's deciding on their path before applying to med school!
First, be sure to check out mappd.com for Mappd, a premed app that's changing the premed landscape, especially for nontraditional students!
As always on the OldPreMeds Podcast, our question this week is taken from our nontraditional premed forum. (Ask your own questions at premedforums.com.)
Our question comes from a nontraditional premed with a completed bachelor's degree and a 2.7 cumulative GPA. They have completed all the med school prereqs in a DIY post-bacc program, getting a 3.9 GPA in those classes.
To raise their total GPA the rest of the way to 3.0, they'd have to take 14 credits each semester in the next year, leaving not much time for MCAT prep. Since they're also working a full-time job, should they prioritize this further GPA repair or MCAT prep?
I give my feedback and also mention a 3rd potential option of what they could do. I share my thoughts about deciding when you should apply and when to push back your application a year.
Also, how long does your "Upward Trend" really need to be to consider your low GPA "fixed" and "overcome"? And how do you decide between these different paths?
Lastly, I share some overall precautions about MCAT prep, application prep, what to be ready for, and what to avoid!

3.19 ---> 3.45 after a DIY postbacc. I have 4 invitations so far. All DO, but medical school nevertheless.

Have a MSc in ex phys, well cited pubs, lots of research xp and time with a clinical population, solid post bacc pre reqs but my culm GPA from ug was like 2.9 rip my life (3.05 w/ some pre reqs) although I need more pre reqs for med. Now, I'm in my first quarter of PT school and doing the whole whatttt if medicine, who ammmm I stuff. Why am I like this! haha. Great channel. You've made me realize that I actually could get into a medical program with 1-2 years of hard work and developing my identity in medicine.

Yay! I responded to this person on the forum a week ago because we were on the same boat as far as undergrad GPA. I'm so glad you're covering this.

Great video! I feel like a good number of students relate to this. I'd personally advice to only take the MCAT when you're hitting close to your goal score on practice exams. Don't settle for a lower mcat cos that can boost your stats. As for gpa, I shared a couple super helpful tips on my page on ways to get and maintain a 4.0 GPA.

I think he just randomly chooses from the post's on the forum. I read this post a week or so ago and talked to that person about their situation since I'm on the same boat. I could be wrong but I think you simply make a post on the site.
