I was only here to see how the 100-400 performed on the G9. This video nicely shows your amazing articulacy. Plus your photo, audio, video and wildlife knowledge. Then there's your skill at capturing it all to perfection from a very difficult viewpoint without being a typically narcissistic, in your face, YT "compere." That's an amazing accomplishment for one short video about Cockatoos. Thank you for sharing all of the above in such an accessible, entertaining, educational and interesting way.
Really nice detail in the still images. Very impressive. I look forward to future videos and exploration of the outdoors as well as the Lumix MFT format.
Marvelous work Ian and thanks for the great tips. Getting sharp focus when shooting smaller birds that always seem to be on the move is my greatest challenge.
Nice bird photography and video. Good tips on focusing. I bought a G9 and the Panasonic-Leica100-400mm lens. I sometimes use the Panasonic app with my cellphone from inside my house with the camera focused on the feeder or birdbath. I can focus using the cellphone and Panasonic as a bird arrives and get some great photographs from inside my livingroom. Beats using a bird blind.
great video - I liked it - and I liked the quality of the lavalier mic - no noise around you but only your voice predominant and it was great to listen it was much better of many USA Hollywood movies on outside scenes where you don't get to understand the words while here in your videos Your audio is perfect - so I read in your descriptions it was Rode Videomic Go microphone - so make ckiccable link of your gear so we will find them easily and Amazon will be very pleased to give you the little feed you deserve . Yes you have written the name of your gears but they are not cliccable . I subscribed to your channel and I put a thumb up so the 229 thumb up is mine .
Hi Tony, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I've thought about putting links to Amazon or B&H for my gear. Will investigate for future videos. Cheers, Ian
Nice lens, I could only go to the 100-300 Lumix Vario G but even so using the Panny Image app and also the touch screen options i'm well happy. I use a 7 in monitor rigged to my tripod with my GH5 to make sure i'm hitting the sweet focus spot. You are lucky with your indigenous birds, you have a lot that sit lazily in the trees enjoying the munchies but here in UK the little lovelies are always flitting about unless you ambush them with a bowl of goodies but then that ruins all cred in taking the natch pics and video. Nice post .
Great video and photos. Beautiful birds, especially love their hair/feather styles. Kind of like a mohawk look. Love your tips and will try some of them out with my own G9. Keep up the great work!
Really great film Ian of both video and photo. I am also a fan of Panasonic, owning both the old GH4 and the G85 and I have found that pinpoint focus has come in handy on many occasions. Joan
Thanks for watching - glad you're enjoying the videos. Sometimes I don't even know where I'm going next ;-) For this one, I got the heads up that the Gang Gang Cockatoos had arrived this week so couldn't resist the opportunity. Cheers, Ian
Great video, a real refreshing change from landscapes and genuinely useful information, it is good to see your bird work with the new gear, the stills and video seem rich in colour and sharp as.
As a new-ish owner of a G9 (since Nov '19 plus firmware upgrade) and considering the 100-400 lens this is just what I was looking for. Thank you. I've been bingeing on your videos, but I (and I'm sure other G9 owners) would really appreciate a video on YOUR video settings, especially since the Nov '19 firmware upgrade. I find many of the current crop over-complicated and not up to date with the firmware upgrade. Please? Stay safe!
Another great video, Ian, thanks. Thank you for this video as I love seeing wildlife and birds from other parts of the world. I'm still debating whether to purchase the 100-400 but I have the 100-300 mark ii to learn the G9 with for now. I'm really loving the G9 as I sell the rest of my Canon gear off on ebay. I recently started a remote job so I find myself able to take a walk after work with my G9 and sample our local wildlife in the neighborhood such as dragonflies, herons, woodpeckers, and bluejays. Please keep the videos coming, perhaps a video about back button focus on the G9 might be interesting.
Thanks for those top tips. You began by visiting a university over Easter, far from the madding crowd. I'll practice those settings with my G9 with our local lorikeets. A top vlog, as always; thanks Ian. Mike in Oz
Thanks Mike. Yes, it was serendipitous that the birds were there late last week so I had the opportunity to be there while there was almost no-one else on campus.
Great video and some excellent shots. Just wondering why you suggest switching to MF when you're using back button focus? Wouldn't lifting your thumb do the same thing?
Hi, can you tell me - shooting from your tripod, did you turn of all stabilisation or did you shoot with lens or camera stabilisation turned on? I have just bought the same gear, moving from OMD EM1mkll. Also please do you ever shoot hand-held with this camera lens combination, and with what result? Cheers fellow Australian.
Hi Hanz, thanks for watching. Yes, when on a tripod, I turn off stabilisation. Re handholding, I shoot a lot of my wildlife stills handheld - particularly when on bush walks (which for most of last year was the only way I could get out as we were allowed to be out of home for exercise). The stabilisation is excellent. I haven't done much video work during COVID but I do have wildlife shots from the last 12 months on instagram, all shot handheld: instagram.com/iansmissen/ Cheers, Ian
Thank you Ian. Excellent photos and video! I just bought a G9 and Leica 100-400mm lens last week. Today I was shooting two pair of birds at their nests; Killdeer at about 30 meters away and Mute Swan at about 75 meters, both with 400mm. I could not get both of each pair in focus even though they were standing right next to each other. It looks like the lens was beginning its depth of field too soon or too late by picking up the grass in the foreground or the stalks and leaves behind the birds, kind of sloppy. I will try pinpoint focus with your suggestions to get the depth of field landed right on a bird next time, instead of the lens averaging a guess where I am focusing while the birds are fidgeting about. Does the Leica 100-400 have a shallow depth of field in your opinion? I upgraded from Nikon P530 bridge that seemed to have a much longer one. Thanks man!
Hi. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Depth of Field is inversely related to focal length, so at 400mm there will be very shallow depth of field. You need to close down the aperture to widen the depth of field but (of course - everything in photography is a compromise) this means you'll get a slower shutter speed so you may need to raise your ISO to compensate. Best of luck. Long distance focus can be tricky at the best of times but is much more difficult with foreground interference. Cheers, Ian
Hi Michael, it is a Jobu Design Algonquin tripod. Jobu Design is a Canadian company. I bought it directly from their website jobu-design.3dcartstores.com/Algonquin-Carbon-Tripod_p_122.html as there were no distributors in Australia.

Switching to manual after you gain focus is a great idea. Thanks!

Thanks Phillip. Much appreciated!

Thanks Bruce...I look forward to getting out too. 😀
Marvelous work Ian and thanks for the great tips. Getting sharp focus when shooting smaller birds that always seem to be on the move is my greatest challenge.
Thanks Bob, yes, small birds moving in trees and bushes are probably the hardest subjects to photograph.
Just wonderful, Ian. Stunning results, both in stills and video with that lens & camera combo. I loved watching them through your lens!
Thanks Derek. Glad you enjoyed the video. :-)
Nicely done. Beauuutiful plumage.
great, thanks

Красиво!
Lovely looking birds and environment. If only birwatching spots could be this quiet all the time!
Steve Ferneyhough Yeah, I got lucky with Easter. Couldn’t have done this the day before 😀

Rachel Lerch Thanks for the kind comments and the sub - greatly appreciated 😀 Still can’t get over that beaver on the beach! Cheers Ian
Brilliant. Worthy of a spot in Blue Planet
Thanks Jeremy :-)

Peter Yates Yes, you are correct for video. It’s just a habit from my landscape photography when I bracket.
