I started at age 21 (25 now) and a lot of the songs and knowledge I’ve learned was found through the internet and RUclips. It amazes me how people were able to just ear solos like this back then

If you were lucky, you might have been able to find published sheet music for popular songs, but the chords on the music were rarely the same as what the artist played on the record. They were simple piano arrangements with guitar folk chords written across the top. So if you wanted the chords to a song, you just had to listen to it until you could hear them. Learning solos was even harder, at least it was for me, but at the end of the day, it made your ear better and therefore made you a better musician.
Your method in your tutorial is EXACTLY the way I like to see it...giving the chords and simply showing your lead...it is the least cumbersome and most informative and enjoyable to watch, presented in such an ideal format. Thanks!

This is the best lead solo I've seen for One Of These Nights. Great job! I'm trying to put it all together now on my Fender American Tele its a very complicated rundown but this has helped as I attempted to play it by ear. Thanks for the great lesson!

Well it's hard to put in a short description. There are tons of settings you can adjust. Of course it also depends on the type of pickups in your guitar. For this video one thing I did different was put my pickup switch in the middle to use both pickups. That gives it more of that warm body tone a little more bassy (probably not a word but I think it should be LOL) I think that helps the distortion not be so obnoxious. Of course it also depends on your amp. On my videos I'm actually not playing through an am but recording directly you can read about it here... But if I had to summarize for a basic setup I would say a moderate amount of gain or distortion should be on, and if you have two humbuckers like I do use them both so you get the lower tone rhythm pickup sound as well. If not just set the tone on your amp and guitar to cover the full range - that is be sure to include enough bass and mid-range as well as the treble.
There is a little descending chord progression in the end of this tune that to me is the almost the most difficult to figure out and time out. It's almost in the background of the mix,very melodic,never seen anyone break this down.Great tutorial vid btw
I don't remember the exact settings. Just playing through a boss gt-001 tabletop processor, into a recorder. On the rhythm I was using both pickups and on the SG I think the rhythm pickup just kind of a nice sound. As far as the lead though I'm thinking I switched to the treble pickup which is what I use 99% of the time
Fantastic tutorial and thank you so much! You make it look easy......but I'm struggling. Only one question.......would you tell me what brand and gauge of strings you're using? These bends are killing me. I'm not a lead-type guitar player, but I'm going to work THIS out if it kills me! :) From all the comments, it sounds like you worked harder on the sound than learning the song........totally worth it! :)
I use extra light gauge .09 -.42. Honestly it's been so long since I changed them I'm not sure what brand they are LOL. They may be Gibson or ghs boomers or elixir. Besides the gauge of strings how low your strings are to the fretboard can also help a lot with pressing the strings. Lastly if you just play 5 minutes a day, especially on those thin string bends, your fingers will get enough of a callus where it won't bother you. I think the key to toughening up your fingers is just playing a little everyday versus playing a lot in one day.. Oh and then again having some distortion and sustain helps as well. Lastly even though this is not a fast solo the little nuances make it rather difficult so don't get discouraged. I cover a lot of solos and the first time I tried this it didn't sound right. So I had to grab my Taylor Mini and rebuild them (ouch). I rarely play my Telecaster as I'm totally inept at setting up an amp :( I just bought a Spark Amp hoping that will help.....cause it HAS to sound at least close! I know my strings are Elixir, and are of a light gauge....but not "what" gauge? I will re-string to yours and see if it helps :) Thank you again, and I will subscribe!
One of Don Felder's Great solos before Hotel California. I believe Glenn Frey does the sliding licks. Bernie Leadon is in there somewhere also. He stated he used his Les Paul through a modded Tweed Fender Deluxe, wont say how its modded, claims its one of his tone secrets.
I use .09 for the high E string. Not sure if you have thicker strings but if so, thinner strings may help. Not sure what I did for the tone exactly. Just tweaked it a lot I'm sure.

The part from 4:28 - 4:33 is the trickiest part, trying to get from the bent-up A to the G on the high e string to the A on the g string in a fluid motion in time. Tricky skip across the strings. Killer lesson!
Hey, loved the video. At the end of the song in the outro I hear a chord solo being played when its going from a Gmaj7 to Cmaj7. Is he just playing those chords back to back or is there something fancy going on?
I think I know what part you're talking about . I believe he does it in the middle of the song as well during the chorus. I don't know the part but I think it's a little more than just the chords, probably harmony notes out of the chords and scale that he's going down. 'll have to give it a listen to see.

I honestly don't remember. I just played with the tone at the time for that sound. I think the biggest thing is I have the neck pickup on as well as the bridge pickup to get that fuller sound, but that was during the rhythm only. On the solo I'm pretty sure I would have just used the bridge pickup.

I've broken three high e strings trying to get this right. .... This is the best tutorial on this solo out there. Still how you get that tone?
