For anyone confused: These two characters are from a 2004 RPGMaker indie game made by independent developer Kikiyama called yume nikki. It's about a girl named madotsuki who doesn't want to go outside and spends her time dreaming (you can research the game if you want to know more). The character in the magenta sweater is Madotsuki (the girl you play as). The lady with the long nose is an NPC called a Toriningen (roughly translating to "Bird Person"). In game, when you stab a Toriningen using the "Knife" effect, they turn into pink-eyed lunatic Toriningens and start chasing the player. When/If they catch the player, the player is teleported to an unescapeable area and is forced to wake up. The background of the video is a place in the game called the Guillotine. The Guillotine is a place with many random closet doors, and it is littered with Lunatic Toriningen. The video displays a never ending cycle, because the regular Toriningen chased by Madotsuki will turn into a Lunatic Toriningen if stabbed, and will then start chasing Madotsuki. Yume Nikki is available to play for free on steam.
i just learned today that there is a Toriningen in the Candle world that moves insanely fast when it's angry, i came back to watch this video again because when that Toriningen goes into hyperdrive i now know what that looks like in game xD

There's something epic about 8-bit music using real instruments halfway through the song or even an orchestra. Take Porky's boss theme from Earthbound. What a masterpiece.
What makes it so great is how unexpected yet amazing it is. You're so used to just these cute little "beep sounds" used as the theme but then these orchestral instruments start playing out of the blue which not only makes it more grand and epic,but also gives a huge "OOMPH" to the already intense music
my favorite is directly before that, when along with the stops in music she disappears and reappears like a phantom. honestly the whole thing together is so powerful and i love it.

Can I just real quick stop to appreciate the pile of references this animation uses to accentuate Madotsuki's inherent fear factor. From the Mini Mado (ahem, "Midget" as the game calls it) effect being used to justify that quick unnoticeable scurry, the Demon + Umbrella combo for pure fear factor, the constant use of the cat effect to open Mado's eyes, the Spirit Headband that makes Mado invisible but flickers her into view to the melody as she approaches, Faceless, Eyepalm, Beheaded and a yet unidentifiable "Tall" effect, all used to spook, and what I can ONLY ASSUME to be the knife propped up on a REALLY out-of-style Umbrella effect. Hm? Looking at the wiki? Nooo what gives you THAT silly idea???

Royce Bracket he's referring to how in the game this animation is based on you can equip "effects" that change the appearance of the character and or give an ability/ item to use.
I think it’s just a combination of several existing effects like blonde hair, demon, neon, and cat. You can also see her holding an umbrella and knife.
It's multiple effects at once. I see Umbrella, Knife, Cat, Blonde, Neon, and Oni. Note: Multiple effects is not possible ingame... save for speed glitches, I suppose? Either way, aesthetics don't merge.
the minigame works like this (pretend you're playing rhythm heaven megamix): when the toriningen comes up to you you have to press A after they tap your shoulder. if the toriningen starts catching up to you you have to press B in order to equip the bicycle effect to go faster. when madotsuki gets the knife it switches control to the toriningen and it's basically the same thing except you are the toriningen and madotsuki is chasing you.
Just can't express how much I love the music getting amped up when Madotsuki gets the knife in the second part of the song and how great it expresses the power difference there is when the player has the weapon.
Yume nikki is a very popular RPG maker game released in the early 2000's about a hikkikomori named Yume Nikki exploring a imaginary world created by her feelings of isolation. It was extremely popular for its time and was one of the biggest RPG maker games, spawning hundreds of fanmade games and even a remake published in 2015.

Can I just real quick stop to appreciate the pile of references this animation uses to accentuate Madotsuki's inherent fear factor.
From the Mini Mado (ahem, "Midget" as the game calls it) effect being used to justify that quick unnoticeable scurry, the Demon + Umbrella combo for pure fear factor, the constant use of the cat effect to open Mado's eyes, the Spirit Headband that makes Mado invisible but flickers her into view to the melody as she approaches, Faceless, Eyepalm, Beheaded and a yet unidentifiable "Tall" effect, all used to spook, and what I can ONLY ASSUME to be the knife propped up on a REALLY out-of-style Umbrella effect.

I think the tall effect is the buyo buyo effect cause it makes you squishy and she shaped herself to be taller

two of my favorite games in one? hell yes
the minigame works like this (pretend you're playing rhythm heaven megamix):
when the toriningen comes up to you you have to press A after they tap your shoulder.
if the toriningen starts catching up to you you have to press B in order to equip the bicycle effect to go faster.
when madotsuki gets the knife it switches control to the toriningen and it's basically the same thing except you are the toriningen and madotsuki is chasing you.
Am I the only one who thinks this is incredibly catchy and needs MORE of this? The whole vibe too is just 10/10.
