All my autistic son ever wanted to do was be a Paleontologist and was obsessed with dinosaurs, biology, and geology. He went on an interview and told the woman at Vocational Rehab that he was looking forward to going to college and was looking for help and advise with that. She was rude and condescending, and told him college was not in his future "he was not college material" but he could be trained to stock shelves at TJ MAXX and learn to ride the bus. My son would rather take a beating than be in a retail clothing store around tons of shoppers. He started crying and I told him to never let anyone stand in front of his dreams or tell him he was not capable of anything he wanted to do.
I took him and enrolled him in Nashville State Community College immediately after leaving her office. Since he was on disability he was eligible for Pell Grants so his tuition was close to free and he got an apartment in public housing. He graduated with an Associates Degree in Biology and a minor in Geology. Now with one more class he will finally finish after 8 years and be getting his Bachelors Degree at MTSU in Biology and Geology. He has come a long way and has even started wearing kilts for his Scottish heritage and learning to play the bag pipes. He loves the mens choir and has worked harder than anyone I know in my life to accomplish his goals, even though it has been a long road. He will be going to the La Brea Tar Pits an active paleontological research site in urban Los Angeles this summer to dig for prehistoric bones.
Thank God we did not listen to that counselor. I told him when he gets his diploma he needs to find that woman and tell her that she almost cost him his whole life of doing what he had always dreamed of. Don't ever underestimate an autistic child. My son was diagnosed with autism at Vanderbilt University when he was three years old. He was in special education throughout elementary and did not say a word before 8 years old. He was in special education in junior high, and had para's in High School. All of his teachers loved him and are so proud of him. To bad that woman at Vocational Rehab could not see any potential in him.🤔 Don't give up on your dreams.

I'm glad he has you for support. Congratulations to him. I'm working with VR and they also made me cry when they said I couldn't do animation.

@@13crimsonangel You hang in there crimson angel and find someone, anyone who will advocate for you. Even though it is hard to muster up the courage sometimes you stand up for yourself! Cry if you must, get angry if you must, but keep reaching for your goals no matter how big or small. Sometimes it takes baby steps and you might fall down but you get back up and keep trying, and trying, and trying. Be stubborn, be brave, be strong. I will be thinking of you and sending a little prayer for your wellness, peace of mind, and success.🙏
There are so many good video's on RUclips about animation and many community colleges have art degrees. If you think you might be interested in college take a friend or family member and go to your local community college. Just walk around or find a bench and set for awhile if you get overwhelmed. Even if you have to visit several times to feel comfortable. If that goes well talk to an advisor about technical certificates, degrees, classes, and funding. Sign your FASFA "Use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)."
I hope VR goes well for you, but you can do all of these things without VR or a combination of both. There are many campus support systems and colleges have a disability resource center. So good luck and I wish you strength and happiness.🌎☮

Voc rehab was a complete waste of time over the last 2 years. All they did was blame ME for being bullied at work for having a disability and being labeled "autistic". There was zero point to meeting with the job developer when no jobs were ever developed, no certifications were discussed, and whenever I did draw out a plan on my own initaitve, they would try to keep making me second guess myself or bring up "policy" despite my plan actually fitting within policy quite well and taking it into account at all times. Yet all they wanted for me was either slave labor in a packaging department or dishwashing. Which was insulting and nowhere near the jobs I landed on my own before voc rehab despite that being a stated requirement for them to help you obtain by law and policy. When they never pulled that shit with their other clients from what I had learned from others during internships that went nowhere. I'm not asking to be the president of the US. I just want some god damn common courtesy and basic respect at work. "Doesn't matter that some stranger held you at knifepoint YOU were the common denominator." despite not even saying anything to them. Its fucking crazymaking bullshit.
The voc rehab counselor just didn't like me for whatever reason and kept blurting out about how I need therapy when all I needed was a friend and a little bit of social acceptance at work. I was fucking traumatized with PTSD for the last several years on top of documented lifelong disabilities I was born with and had no friends or anyone to talk to. All they did was blurt out platitudes about "needing to advocate for myself" while never explaining how and refusing to listen to anything I had to say. When I have explicit documentation and explained both in person and on paper/email that therapy is not what I need and pills are just swallowing poison hoping someone else will change. I CAN NOT CONTROL OTHER PEOPLE! ITS REDICULOUS TO TRY AND BLAME ME FOR COMPLETE STRANGERS CHOICES. This was nothing more than a formal degradation ritual and I have half a mind to complain to my governor about it.

Lol, they will gaslight and lie to you, I have experienced the same. They're so terrible, you should keep them as a PLAN Z and you need to track EVERY correspondence you have had with EMAIL from them. Otherwise they will ignore your phone calls and voicemails or lie that they didn't receive them.

That is great that you have those services. I know we have Job Network Providers in Australia & Dept. of Human Services, previously known as Centrelink: known to many as centrestink... lol for the unemployed people and people on different disability pensions. Depending on what your situation is will determine as to what type of assistance is available to you but as ya'll experience there in the US it's not easy living on a disability pension. I dropped my hours after experiencing trauma (this is when I fell into a really bad depression and didn't cope very well) while away in Japan last year so went from full time to part time.
Congrats on the job Emilia 😄 I am still with the same company after 4.5 years, grateful for my job! ☺

It takes 60 days in north carolina. I applied and now after the 60 days never worker with a counselor or anything. I receive a letter thinking it will be my determination letter only to tell me "due to unforseen circumstances" they are asking for another 60 days that would be a total of four month.

I was in the California Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in the 1990’s they pick for you, they told me that it is too much competition to be a History teacher. I was told to go to a community college or join the US Navy or go work a minimum wage job I had to go to a public sector employer, so I can have decent career, I graduated high school in 1997, most of my classmates are still making low wages

You should always apply to companies yourself and not rely on someone else to do it for you. When advice is given, it is still up to you to do your due diligence to verify the information. The web is full of tutorials that are free. One way to stay in control would be to ask for your counselor to send you a draft of an email that YOU will send to them. This way, you can proof read and add/delete incorrect information. I'm glad it worked out for you in the end... I've seen that it takes SEVERAL applications and searching constantly for new ones. Each Resume should be tailored to each individual jobs. Stay pro-active, volunteer or school are good uses of your spare time when unemployed and job searching!
