Favorite jazz tune? Mine is “All Blues” by Miles Davis with Jimmy Cobb on drums ;) Intro [00:00] Influences [00:54] Sing, Sing, Sing [02:08] Drum Boogie [02:53] Idaho [04:22] Tiger Rag [04:52] Big Noise From Winnetka [05:16] Caravan [06:31] Gene’s Blues [07:15] Outro [08:06]
That's such an elegant record. Perfect lineup and not a wasted note by anyone involved, even "Trane" played very economically and Jimmy Cobb was so understated.
I'm a hardcore music newbie and haven't been playing drums much, so these semi-documentary vids exposing me to different drummers has been such a cool thing to keep me motivated to keep at practicing. Thanks so much, getting better with each video!
Paolo Vinaccia, who sadly passed away in 2019, was my favourite jazz drummer here in Norway, though he was Italian in origin, worth a look, very musical. Thanks for posting these great films Cob! I enjoyed the tail end of your live session, will look out for the next one. You come across as a very well rounded individual, best wishes!
My favorite Krupa pieces are the lead-up to and the ending of Avalon with Benny Goodman and the pauses and stick-twirling in one of his films on "Leave us Leap". Great stuff.
Alex is such an avid, lifelong student of the drums I've got to think his eyes would light up and he'd go on at length if we asked him about Gene Krupa.
Peter Criss from the Rock Band KISS sites Gene Krupa as his main influence and you can definitely hear it in his playing… especially the way he “ swings” on the drums… “Detroit Rock City “ is a great example of that!!!! Thanks for sharing this video I have been trying to play jazz for years lol 😊!!!!
Good video. Nice to see some brush work. I've mainly focused on Philly,Max,Blakey,Elvin and Morello, but every Jazz drummer from the beginning till now interests me. I've studied Krupa somewhat and have some of his music on CD. One of the things that interests me the most is the wide variety of drummers who cite him as one of their major influences. From Buddy Rich to Peter Criss, the list goes on and on. Every drummer out there should study Gene, regardless of genre/age !
They might have been around the same age, but I wonder if he was an influence to Hoyt Curtin, who's primary love was jazz. Whenever I hear Sing Sing Sing, I think of the opening theme to Jonny Quest done by Hoyt Curtin.
Escuchaste el solo de Gene( el primero de los dos que hace) cuando está por terminar el tema Don´t be that way en la versión en vivo del Carnegie Hall de 1938?
Something that Gene did was to draw a hoop with his right hand, for show. then play a roll finishing with a thump of his kick drum. Look for the 70:s version of sing sing sing. Maybe you can show how he did that? 👌🥁
sorry commented before the video was finished. sing sing sing is where i know him(this is my fav even tho its not him ruclips.net/video/79vtRZSLvfw/видео.html ) was great to learn more about him thru you. thank you for all the drumming knowledge

Bester Mann, Schulprojekt gerettet! Weiter so men Jung 👍 👏
You can really hear how Gene influenced Rock drummers. Not sure if Alex Van Halen studied him but they have similar ways of using the toms.

Alex Van Halen Loved Buddy Rich & Ginger Baker
@@T.C.Clarien Makes sense. Ginger was one of the first Rock drummers to use a big kit, him and Moon.

Great video. Your show/tell-ratio is at good balance.
Nice one. Thank you 😊
Krupa is my favorite drummer, too. Video was great do more!
Great video! I am trying to learn about and listen to an influential drummer everyday, and this video was perfect. Thanks for your content!
Nice bro👍
Try to grab a vintage Slingerland kit, for that Krupa sound..
Share the magic

sweet video dude!
When requesting your pass to peruse Cobb's library, be sure to specify "recordings" or "printed material."
Om Sing Sing Sing, he is doing a bunch of doubles on the FT

If you don’t mind me asking… what is the drum kit you’re playing? I love the sound of it! Thanks 🙏!
Sonor Safari. Thanks for watching!
Id be interested to know if you have found a transcription of the intro to ‘leave us leap’? Josie let me know
How about the street drummer playing a plastic bucket in the film Taxi Driver.
