Well done Nathan! You met and overcame that challenge. This will certainly help someone out. I appreciate your videos and the work you do. Thanks.
A tip for you, if the tie rods are OK, undo them at the rack end and leave in place, much easier to get the rack out and steering alignment is not disturbed.
Thank you Nathan
Nathan, thanks for all you do. Very informative. Hang in there.
Oh the memories of working on my 97 E39 528i... That car changed my mind when owning BMWs newer than 1995. Now I own a 91 318i and 1995 325i both are manual transmissions. Remember use green lok-tite it's the best stuff to piss off your mechanic....
Thank you for the video and your nice english ☺️
I like the e60 videos. Anything with a v8 is also cool
good video
You sir are a legend. Keep it up. Need some more e36’s in there tho. Maybe a convertible. 😉
Yeah this is my nightmare right now I'm going through the same thing and I personally think if I could just take off the motor mount it would slide right through but I don't know if it's going to be that easy
Not just bmws that are put together like this, most modern cars require lots of unnecessary labour on seemingly menial items.
I’m eventually gonna have to do this on my E53. This things been a world of problems. So much for a “cheap bmw” 😉
E53 has a similar setup, have to take down the crossmember too
Is there something you don't know about E39s? Wow..Genius
So drop of the subframe on R6 engine needed as well?
Hi Nathan,
Is it possible to replace the steering rack by only lowering the subframe and using an engine support bar? The car is a '99 528iT. Thank you in advance.
I have a question on this power steering stuff w my 525i e39
First, i replaced my inner n outer tie rods, and the bellows about 3 years ago and had 0 issues until about 6 months ago.
Out of nowhere one day i ran out of ps fluid quick. When i looked i noticed the passenger side bellow popped off and i didnt think anything of it i just assumed my doing a full turn to the right mightve just over extended the reach enough to fall off.. i know it should stay in place regardless. So i just reclamped it w new clamps to see and sure enough, same issue. Unless i install it and dont drive, i cannot keep the passenger side bellow on no matter what ive tried... it is over 200k miles and the suspension is getting soft so i thought maybe to pull the inner n outer tie rod in to each other just enough to eliminate it stretching as a temp fix to still drive it further than a mile before losing all ps fluid.
Now i watched your video on the rack n pinion removal and the other one about what seals go bad on the rack..
So my question is... am i right to assume the bellow is coming off because the seal on the rack on my passenger side is bad therefor it leaks into the bellow, filling it to the point that when i turn to the right and then back straight it just forces itself of the clamp mounts due to the pressure inside the bellow?
Does this model have the steering wheel angle sensor inside the steering column like the e90? I made the mistake of rotating the steering wheel 360 degrees with the steering column disconnected from the rack and i snapped that fragile ribbon wiring harness because it was stretched too far in one direction. It can only go 5 full turns in any one direction before you run out of ribbon. Its like deja vu for me watching you run into nightmares like this
U shure taking out the engine is faster? Can u maybe do a video of how to take out the engine? Thx
The way I do it is to undo inner tie rods and lines, I do the rack bolts then pull the rack from driver's while twisting on it and it comes out. It is not as hard as u think.
Andy S no way that will happen on this one, like others were saying depends on what year and engine , this is a 03 so last year, a lot of things are different on this car than earlier years
Looks like the underside of my E46 . No garage though so buying parts over winter ready to strip it on the driveway in spring
Window regulator and door panels on E36/7 please. I have a 1998 Z3 and the power windows dont work, not sure if its the regulators or just need cleaning and lubricating. Seems hard to get in there.
Take the panel off and look is all you can do
Yeah, e36 and e46 steering racks are on the bottom and are a piece of cake to swap compared to this. Also, e36 and e46 racks are interchangeable but you do have to make a hybrid steering column coupler to put an e46 rack onto an e36. I put a e46 330ci rack in my e36, I was told it was closest you could get to an M3 rack without spending that kind of money. If I had it to do over again, not sure I would have done that. Keep wrenchin’!
1.9 Z3 racks are the best for e36... 95 M3 are the worst. I use stock for my 325i
@@earnestbunbury2103 is correct. The 4 cylinder Z3 rack is the quickest ratio rack that you can buy for the E36 chassis.
Did you consider a rebuild of the rack? After watching so many of your videos, I've decided to pull the front end off to install the engine on my 03 e39! Previous engine drank a brake booster compartment full of water and put a rod through the block. (Was not even running, the starter did all the work!) Do you have a recomendation for a replacement radio? (It has the basic stereo and no navi ) Sorry for so many questions, but just one more! (Please!) Do you have a recomendation for ABS module repair?
Thanks for not only sharing your knowledge, but also for not emulating so many other BMW channels that spend more time trying to prove to everyone how great and knowledgeable they are than actually providing content to learn from! Thanks again Nathan!!
A company on ebay does the abs rebuild for $100, you send your unit to them, you can use whatever replacement radio you want, now they even make a harness so you can use your steering wheel controls with any radio
Is it the same for v8s?
Complete E39 build plz
I have a 2001 530i sitting here that will be the next engine swap
Don't know if left hand drive is different but the is no way you need to lower the subframe to replace the rack on rhd!
Is the right hand drive the 2.0 or 2.3? if so the oil pan might be different
My car the e39 , like
hi i have a e39 530i that takes forever to start. it seems to happen only after the car has been driven not as much if at all sometimes when it’s cold. it makes a clicking noise under the passenger side dash until the gear indicator light comes on inside the dash, a yellow brake like comes on and the temp gauge pegs to the right as well until the gear light comes on and the clicking stops. i’ve read many forums but can’t seem to find anything on this problem, any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated because this is quite annoying needless to say. @ Nathan’s DIY Garage
Pull the carpet up on the passenger foot floor and make sure that fuse box is not wet in the floor
Do you think you could do one of these diys with an e39 with recirculating ball steering?
what e39 has that steering box ??
Stephen Dinnes all of the v8 e39s
540's just have the old school non rack steering, the center arm is replaceable, similar to a old straight axle truck
It could be, I have worked on 97-01.
2008 bmw 528i 249,000 rack loose in center when driving yes tried to adjust but worn out sooooo I marked top shaft and rack below...hehe pulled adjuster out left top steering shaft about 2” to disingage from rack then on passanger side pulled tire and both inter tie rods on passager side removed clip that holds in shaft bearing and pull shaft out yes there plenty of room to pull shaft out😃 bought rack on eBay for 100 bones and installed it reverse order drives just like new again!👍💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 Thay wanted between 1100 to 1500 only labor the car is hardly worth that now, note put grease on rack teeth or unless you like metal to metal and feel like doing it again...hehe
I just swapped the rack on my 98 528i in my driveway. I did not have to drop the subframe. I did have to lift the engine up with my engine hoist 5 or 6 inches. Old rack was taken out by removing the inner tie rod assemblies on both sides . It came out easily . The new rack had the inner tie rods installed already. slide passenger side first, then alot of wiggling around and it was in.
robert furlow what about the steering column remove? Straight forward? And did u lose the engine mounts? Thx
is there not a pin to center the rack before you fit the rack
Usually they come with the plastic guide installed to center the splines, but this one did not have that
What color is your bmw?
Lot of green down there imagine that lmao
I wonder how that Chinese made rack compares to the BMW? I am doing this nightmare job now and it ( chinese rack from ebay) seems turns a lot more to one side then the other. I have centered it prior installation. The main shaft where tie rods are attached is also a bit longer ( 10mm on each side) then the original. I wonder if I will have a problem align it. I see you had this problem when you ran out of tie rod thread. Hows the feedback. Ive done it on e36 and the steering now ( chinese one) is a lot lighter then it was with BMW rack.I can spin it with one finger. And I have to turn steering wheel about 10-20 degrees more to get the turn in compare to bmw original. Thanks.
Record the regulator.
Already done, video will be up tomorrow
Now I see why a shop wants$3k for this to be done
Lol that is too much
@@NathansBMWWorkshop I hope you're right, Nathan, cause there's no way I'm doing this myself.
Cost my friend $550 for rack replacement on e39
What I want to know is, why are BMW steering so stiff?🤔
Stiff steering could be from bad strut top hats or bad ball joints or tie rods
dunno why peeps do alignments with the tires off the ground.
This car was still on the ground, just jacked it up slightly so I can get to the adjustments and move them easier
Great video Nathan, maybe you just changed my mind the other way not to get a BMW. Getting lazy in my old age. 👍
I am not an BMW expert, but E 39 stands for the 3 series, and the E 60 for the 5? :)
Roger, so that's the code ;)
So, my son has an E 46 and his younger brother has an E 39 :)
They are both 5 series…
Not fun, how it it sits on top of frame is Lame. Thanks.
Stupid way to do alignment go take it some where to get wheel alignment dont be cheap
Stay relevant.. e39 and e60 are dated. Most people have the F series and above now. e60 if no choice. e39 too old. Too many DIYS already listed online.
F series is still to new for moat to buy, most diy guys are still doing e36 e39 e46 stuff
@@NathansBMWWorkshop Thanks for the response. I appreciate the clip nonetheless. Just hoping I could see some work on a newer car. Give us an update on the E60 please.
E39 will be relevant when the E60's are in the scrap yard
E 60 will be relevant when the F is in the scrapyard
