      Soooo when I see the title/thumbnail I of course click, and then when I'm less than 3 seconds in, I see your comment and it probably goes without saying that my immediate reaction was, "what in the name of all creatures big & small has this comment have to do with THIS video?!?!?!"
      😂
      (Subsequently, naturally a classic, "OOOOOOOOOOHHH, NOW I see...," was something I also said as the vid wrapped up hahaha)

    I work frequently with otters and would encourage everyone to leave wild otters alone. Yes they are cute, they are also in the same family as the mongoose, badger, and wolverine. They have the same temperament as well. If you find an abandoned wild Otter pup do not take it home. They are not dogs or cats. Call a local authority or leave them alone. They will most likely hurt you, and you will most likely cause them to be malnourished.

      Otterly historical fact: Ancient Persian Zoroastrians believed Otters to be sort of devine or sacred. They called them water dog and dogs were already very important, in combination with the sacred element of water, well, let me say this for killing an otter you would get 1000 leashes. Basically a death sentence. Extremely based if you ask me.

    Even though it may make you sad for wild animals to flee from you understand this. Wild animals are dangerous, even the tiny cute ones. They should all be encouraged to fear humans for the safety of all species involved. Most importantly, do not pet wild animals. Just don't, if you want to pet a deer or something find a petting zoo with tame animals.

  • @Jurttle1337
    @Jurttle1337 10 месяцев назад +3

    For a video dedicated to the endangered Sea otter, I am disappointed to see many images and silhouettes of river otters instead. They're distinct species with many different behaviors and attributes. River otters tend to look to have 4 "legs", weight a lot less, smaller shape, and have less fur. Sea otters are much larger, weighing in between 30-40kg and can be up to 5 feet long! (tails are not as long compared to its body). Sea otters lack fat compared to other blubbery marine animals, and compensates with very thick fur!
    The Southern Sea Otter has had a very rough history, thought to be wiped out by fur traders. It wasn't until mid-1900 where a raft of 50 sea otters were founded near Monterey Bay. It has taken many decades, but now we are up to 3,000 sea otters, and it remains ever important to continue protecting them as sea otters are important to the health of kelp forests near our shores. I hope to raise awareness of our furry friends and help us distinguish them should we see them in the wild! According to Sea Otter Savvy, we want to maintain 5 kayak lengths away from them at minimum.
    Fun fact! Sea otters fur is so dense, it is the equivalent of all the hair on a house cat condensed to the size of a postage stamp, and without the fat insulating them, they need to eat the 25% of their body weight every day! Thats like trying to eat 25 hamburgers every day :0

    Dude! I've got to know when Otter 723 was active in Monterey bay!!! Here's the story:
    I've only been to the US once, in March 2004. I was there with 2 friends (one of whom is now a specialist in cetatian intelligence), and their friend, whom I shall refer to as G. I had wanted to see the sea otters since I was a kid, and my grandmother went to a medical conference in Monterey in the early 80s. She brought back a book, framed print and very realistic plushy, all about the sea otters. So when our road trip took us to Monterey, I was very excited to go out in tandem kayaks to see the sea life up close. I stress the tandem kayaks for two reasons - first, I'm visually impaired, so generally I only see wildlife in the wild if they've been run over by a car, and secondly, because I was NOT the one deciding which direction to paddle in. G was the pilot, and they were heading right for a raft of sea otters. I pointed out that the guy who rented us the kayaks said to stay 100 yards away from the animals. G replied, "No, it was 100ft", while paddling up to about 25 ft from the otters. One of the otters caught our eye, swam over to us, and proceeded to attempt to hitch a ride on our kayak. She (I'm assuming it's Otter 723 or her mum), tried to climb up the front, but couldn't gain purchase. So she swan round the back and tried to boost herself up right behind me on the kayak. I could see her, she wasn't road-kill, it was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. But we totally shouldn't have been that close to the wildlife! If it turns out that the otter in question was a known criminal / celebrity, it would make me happy for the rest of my life!!!!!

      She's protecting her territory.
      She recognises the potential danger posed by humans and their surfboards and wants them gone from her breeding ground - perfectly understandable.
      It isn't just about the direct danger posed by surfers - it'll also be about resources - will the presence of humans impact the availability of food?
      Which for a sea otter, (or any other wild animal) is a perfectly valid question.

    Wisely and lovingly told! This is an immediately engaging story to anyone familiar with otters, because it's so unlike them to be violent, so it's understandable that the mellow surfers saw the otter as persecuted, even when she was dangerous. Pretty confounding. Otters are one of the few animals that are friendly, curious and playful, even around humans. While it strikes me as crazy to try to pet a wild animal of any kind, I could hardly imagine an otter pursuing people and exhibiting such jaws-like aggression. Has the misguided sentimentality of human feeding ruined this animal spectacularly? Is the otter rabid or otherwise mentally ill? I wouldn't have guessed the bizarre disposition was hormonal, but that makes sense too. Pregnancy counts as a serious illness of a sort, both for humans and animals -- think of postpartum depression in people, or otherwise vicious predators that will sometimes baby animals that would otherwise be their prey, because they meet them at the time when their bodies tell them to care for something defenseless, small and cute. Hormones cause animals to behave with other animals and humans in ways utterly different than they would otherwise.
