I also read somewhere that the Beatles reached for the sky, the Stones aimed for your crotch, the Kinks wanted to tickle your funny bone, but the Who went right for your throat.
Saw the Who in 1967...Townshend smashed up a Telecaster while Moon kicked his drums all over the stage and they knocked over dummy amps with smoke bombs in them...Entwhistle was the usual calm in the eye of the storm and being the last man on stage after the chaos he simply dropped his Jazz bass butt-end on the stage and walked off...perfect exclamation mark!

This is the one song by The Who that gets stuck in my head the most for some reason. Maybe it's the cadence or beat to it. But my favorite of theirs is "Squeeze Box".
As a 13 yr old upon it's release, I LOVED to shout out "Hope I die before I get old!" Now 70 yrs young, I STILL feel like I'm but a teenager... Those were the daze! Thanx Beth.
The Who is definitely obe of rocks iconic bands. What I enjoy about your reactions are all the information and breakdown of the vocals. Very thorough yet understandable! Benjamin Tod doung Using Again please.
Nice to see a vocal coach give The Ox his due, on bass guitar! Also of note, John Entwistle sings the high harmonies, as well as very low growls. He sings lead on a number of songs and is worth a listen. He's the band's secret weapon.
The Who and Led Zep have so many similarities in personnel and roles it's easy to think is many ways Zep copied the Who. For example, Entwistle was probably the best overall musician in the Who as was John Paul Jones in Zep.
@@billbitterman9487 They are both my fav members of their respective bands... fav zep song is the rain song... jpj serenades us with the mellotron! I think John is my fav musician, period!
Great review. This song blew my 11 year old mind back in ‘65 & made me a Who fan to this day. Probably the most iconic track that sums up the sixties 🎸
First time i heard this something burst in my head. Chaos broke out even though i didn´t understood a world of the lyrics. I live in sweden and was about 6-7 y. o. What couth my attention was John Enthwistle and Keith Moon making this song epic. I nagging on my parents till they had holes in thier haed i wanted a bass. This was the first song that made me interested for music.
Great analysis Beth, and well-researched as usual. I'm proud to say this was my generation, and I'm glad I didm't die before I got old. like Moony and Mr Entwistle..
A great reaction to a stone cold classic! Thank you. I’ve heard the songs that you allow up here, and I am going to get your album for sure. Great work, Beth.
I was 14 when this came out, loved it, bought it & am now on my umpteenth copy as it is a favourite when dj-ing. Though at this years Glastonbury Festival I played their "Won't get fooled again" during a "Rock with a Message" set.
Maybe just because it was new and exciting back then, but didn't stand the test of time. I am a lot younger and listen to music from the 50s until almost present day, but The Who just doesn't move me at all. Like Santana, can definitely play but doesn't cut it for me. My best guess is that you grew up and left the hype for what it was... :-) I'm sure I'm pissing off a lot of people, so be it.
First group that we ever heard that used both bass and drums like lead instruments, which was interesting because Pete Townsend seldom did guitar solos of any kind. John Entwistle is generally acclaimed as one of the best bass players ever. Four phenomenal talents. Long before anyone ever used the term punk rock, they really were.
Thanks, Beth, this is great. One of the songs I knew growing up. Was always fascinated and curious about those stutters. So many great songs from the who but the one that is my favorite is "Behind Blue Eyes". That could have been one for your "Songs that touch the soul" Patron Party.
Just FYI (for any other Brits also) Packard is pronounced "Packerd". They were one of the top American luxury car makers pre-World War II. Think of it like a Bentley or something like that.
Greetings from Scotland. Thanks for doing this. Since I was 7, 60 years ago The Who have been my favourite band. For many years Who's Next was my favourite album. These days I think Quadrophenia has surpassed it. Hopefully you might get round to Nanci Griffith and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Would like to sponsor a Nanci Griffith reaction. Regards and respect, Howard.
Good tips 👍🏼👍🏼 I will add motion sensors to my under counter lights, for those later night trips to get water etc, nice touch with enough ambient light to do what I need then get back out of the kitchen
I saw the comment on the screen about The Who being the loudest band in the world for a time. I don't know if that's right, but I saw them in the 70s outdoors at my college and I can say they were the loudest band I've ever heard.
Anders Colsefni of Slipknot claimed to have gotten over 120db in concert which would be 3db over The Wo's official loudest.. Can't really find any proof, wouldn't shock me though.
Lifelong Who fan here, and like you I've read and heard so many explanations for the use of the stutter in Roger's vocals. I read an interview with Pete many years ago where he stated that it represented angry and insecure youth finding their voice. Given the nature of the rest of the lyrics, that always made the most sense to me. I never believed the "happy accident" in the studio version. Not only does the stutter sound measured and deliberate, but Townshend was too much of a perfectionist and taskmaster with his songs and the performance he wanted to record.
I remember watching the notorious performance of this song on "The Smothers Brothers", and Daltrey's stutter was so... unique. It is my favorite performance of this song. It wasn't Townsend's, due to the large number of fireworks Moon put in his bass drum; Townsend blames that blast for part of his hearing loss.
Addendum to the bass solo story: John actually went through several Danelectros before switching to the Fender. The strings were so thin that he broke them on the first take, so he went back to the shop to get new strings … but they didn’t have that string gauge in stock. So he simply bought another Dan-o bass… broke strings again; bought a third… same result, and now he’d bought every Dan-o they had in the shop! Thus, the Fender, and the completed take of the song that we know and love.😅
In the '70s Pete Townshend said he was seriously considering changing those lyrics. He matured enough to realize that dying before you "get old" is not a good thing.
Beth, тогда вообще никто не заморачивался как он звучит, большинство были авторскими, или импровизациями))) Спасибо тебе))) я пишу по русски - переведёшь) будешь знать кто я) Я - Беларус
For me the Who were at their best in their rock opera stage. Tommy and Quadrophenia where very insightful and packed with iconic songs that meant something. The rest was more like generic classic rock, and mostly wasn't that deep. A lot of their stuff might as well have been written by the Beach Boys.

It's been said "The Beatles wanted to hold your hand, the Stones wanted to get in your pants, and The Who wanted to burn your house down."
I also read somewhere that the Beatles reached for the sky, the Stones aimed for your crotch, the Kinks wanted to tickle your funny bone, but the Who went right for your throat.

The Stones was onto something.

Benjamin Tod doung Using Again please.
It's ironic, the line "I hope I die before I get old " The surviving members of the band are about 80
Distortion: If you listen closely to the scream on “Won’t Get Fooled Again” you’ll hear Daltrey generating enough volume to overload the microphone.

They were The Detours, then The High Numbers(had a minor hit with the song Zoot Suit, which is in the movie Quadrophenia), then became The Who.
Definitely listen to, Love Reign o'er me. One of my favourite Who songs.
Pete loved key changes and uses it a lot in his compositions

Remember when it first came on the transistor radio.
