Fun fact, the script originally had the remaining two agents fight Neo after he beat Agent Smith. But the actors playing the two remaining Agents fled the set after witnessing Keanu actually dive into Hugo Weaving and obliterate him into light before warping reality.
This is one of the greatest endings in the history of film. Everything built so perfectly to this moment, and it was so unexpected and satisfying to watch it play out.
Screenwriting 101- What makes this scene so satisfying is that up until this point, the agents were still practically unstoppable. Their overwhelming strength, speed, and relentlessness made them an unbeatable adversary. Neo's eventual abilities were teased, but he spent most of the film trying to sort himself out. At at least two points, he was helpless. This allowed us to become invested in his struggle. His struggle had stakes and insurmountable obstacles. When he finally overcomes those obstacles, it's euphoric.
Yah, rather than killing 400 nazis in 10 seconds with nothing but a samurai sword and mind powers, the matrix actually had a real struggle and the enemy was brutal, relentless, scary, and highly skilled and it showed. An obstacle, like you said. The fact neo didnt immediately cut through every agent like butter the second he took the redpill is what made this moment so good
@@AudioJeep I always thought it was a slight disappointment they nerfed him so heavily for the sequels. He should've been a kind of deus ex machina for the other characters(like he was at the end of the motorway lorry collision). Instead we had some beautifully staged fight scenes, like the burly brawl and the Merovingian sword fight, but they were: a. without any real tension, because Neo is always going to win, and b. disappointingly tame given that by the end of the first film he can parry blows almost at the speed of light and destroy the most powerful enemies just by jumping into them. In the Merovingian fight, I'd have found it cooler if he just ended the battle in the space of ten seconds by doing something super-special...instead of just fighting like a very good fighter for four minutes or whatever it was. It all looked pretty, and it was better than a lot of other films' fight scenes, but it was kinda pointless. The sequels had all these fight scenes that, unlike the original, were only there to look cool. Whereas all the original's fight scenes fulfilled a purpose: we gradually saw Neo get more and more bad-ass. And that made them not just look cool, but _feel_ cathartic too.
@@thesprawl2361 I don't know if you've watched the Stars Wars Rebels animation, or any of the Stars Wars titled works for the matter, but what you've said reminded me of the very last fight scene between Obi-wan Kenobi & Maul. all that decades of clashes & feud with each other, as well as their personal struggles leaving both old & broken in more ways than one, culminated in a fight scene that lasted just like 10 seconds from start to finish. nothing really flashy as far as Stars Wars works are concerned, yet every move made had the weight of both characters' separate & intertwined histories behind them. the sheer amount of emotions before, during & after that one fight is simply unreal.
If you remember the oracle said he wasn't the one. That he had the gift but he was waiting for something. One of the things she suggested was his next life. At this moment he was basically reborn and had the knowledge that Trinity loved him. He did both of what the oracle mentioned. His next life and what he was waiting for. Love.
I also feel like there is another important aspect of what the Oracle said. We know from early on that Neo doesn’t believe in fate, he doesn’t like the idea of not having control. The concept of an Oracle goes against that belief, so no matter what she would tell him, he wouldn’t believe it. So, by telling him he isn’t the one and telling him he has to make a choice of his life or Morpheus’, his skeptical mind can accept that she probably doesn’t know shit and he shouldn’t be beholden to it. It is what gives him the drive to prove her wrong. She even says “you are gonna walk out of this room and not believe anything I say.” If she would have told him that he is the one and destined to save Morpheus, he wouldn’t have had the drive to actually become the one. It’s why Morpheus cuts off Neo when he is about to tell him the Oracle said he isn’t the one, by saying “the Oracle told you what you needed to hear.” He needed to be told he isn’t the one, therefore he could prove that fate isn’t real by becoming the one and saving both himself and Morpheus. I remember as a kid when I first saw this movie, it really bugged me that the Oracle was wrong and nobody seemed to care. I thought Morpheus was making an excuse for her being wrong. Now, I realize the Oracle just knew exactly what Neo needed to hear in order for him to become the one.
@julianbell9161, all very good points, but as a kid, even without thinking of all that, I always knew the Oracle lied to Neo. One, probably because Neo was the hero of the movie, and was a likeable guy I was rooting for. Second, because of how sarcastic she sounds when she tells him that he would feel better after eating the cookie when he remembers that he doesn't believe anything she says anyway. Third, because of what you mentioned Morpheus said to him “she told you what you needed to hear". And also even though his philosophy pushes him not to believe her, later in the movie, when Morpheus is kidnapped he still understands that she's somehow right, because now he has to decide if wants to save him or not, and he's more determined than ever to save him. Plus, in the end Trinity finally reveals what the Oracle has told her, and we understand why she was embarassed to reveal it, but also why it made everything click.
I saw this as a kid in theaters and I'm 36 now but I STILL get chills when Neo is revived, gets immediately shot at, and he simply turns and quietly declares "No." as he puts his hands up and slows down the bullets into harmless floating pellets. So....damn....good.
This was the coolest shit I ever saw in my life when I was thirteen. Just simply amazing. Stills gives me chills after aaaaall these years. True magic.

Arguably, this is Keanu's greatest movie ever. This movie made him a global icon. I remember queueing a very long line for a ticket in our local theater and stood for 2 hours to see it because there were no vacant seats in the theater. It was that good
@@tornadospin9 Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation is a huge influence on the movie (even if it's somewhat incorrectly applied). The book even appears near the beginning, and "desert of the real" is a phrase used in the book.
3:38 Theres a moment when time slows down during hand-to-hand, where Neo looks at his own hands for a split second. In that moment I feel him thinking... "wow this is... easy". Pure cinematic joy
Let’s add some respect for Smith. He watched a man come back to life, stop bullets in mid air, and beat him with one hand. All three things are not possible…yet he still wanted the smoke.
This is one of the best scenes I've ever experienced in a theater. That part where he flexes and bends the world around him still gives me goosebumps to this day 🔥🔥
I love Keanu's acting of how apathetic Neo is to fighting Smith, like he sees right though his programming, predicting every move. It shows a man truly enlightened.
Neo only says one word in this scene, ”No”. And at that moment, as Neo finally realizes the truth, that one word is so incredibly meaningful. He’s not only saying ”No, you won’t shoot me again”. Now he KNOWS. Now he BELIEVES. In that single word he encapsulates ”No, this isn’t real”, ”No, nothing I believed in for my whole life until now was real”, ”No, you or your bullets can’t hurt me anymore”, ”No, I won’t be lied to anymore” and ”No, this isn’t how things are going to go from now on”. What a powerful and satisfying moment!
When he says "no" to the bullets. The acting is perfect. Seeing through the veil. Calm and collected and a touch of curiosity/disbelief/wonder. Keanu Reeves is perfect for this part. binary code on the walls is also fantastic. Chills
This is still till this day, the most satisfying moment in cinema history, just seeing neo struggle in the first half of the movie then seeing him stop bullets and fight an agent with one hand is just ugh.
The Matrix had such a philosophical impact on me at 15. I'm now 39 and every time I've watched it since then till now over my mini generations and phases of life it still empowers me to this day in a good way. This scene is the pinnacle of the film.

I think you maybe right. Ironically the role of Neo was written for Will Smith but he turned it down. What kind of movie would this have been with Will Smith as Neo? Sounds like a question The Oracle would ask.
When Agent Smith was behind the door and shot him, I remember the entire movie theatre gasping. It was a bullet into all our hearts, we didn't know he was literally about to go super saiyan a few minutes later LOL.
"No" -- simple, yet means so much. Up until this point Neo did not realize he had choices. Was working a job he hated, was not getting sleep, was basically told what to do. Even though he knew he was special, he did not really believe. Anytime I get stuck in life, or my career I come back to this movie and it always help!
He might have been exaggerating a bit. We don't know what the oracle told him, but going by the Merovingian in Reloaded, the abilities of Neo's predecessors were not advanced enough to stop bullets.
@@Nick-jb4xi What if Merovingian was previous "the one" and survived the reload. Would explain some of his abilities, also he talks like he knows what Neo is going through.

This scene can be very motivational, it shows that when we leave behind our self-deprecating thoughts and self-limiting beliefs, we can accomplish more and become greater. The next time you have negative thoughts plaguing you, telling you that you're a worthless failure who can never amount to much, be like Neo; say "no" and stop those thoughts like Neo stopped those bullets, then proceed to defeat your anxieties like Neo defeated Agent Smith. Neo became The One after he began believing in himself, it's time to see what you could become if you start believing in yourself. We all have potential to be great, start believing in yourselves. Beyond self-doubt, destiny awaits.
Alex lin, what you're saying sounds nice, *but that is not what this scene is trying to explain.* This is not about a "motivational speech". It's trying to explain something very significant. The statement "believe in yourself" has both a *blue pill* 🔵 and a *red pill* 🔴 meaning. The blue pill meaning is to identify what the things of this physical world, including the emotions that you're referring to, a person's skills or intellect. Neo's death and Resurrection put all of those things to death. What the scene is showing is a death to oneself, *the old man,* which means the evil people speak of you is not about you at all, it's about the old man, the man of the flesh. When a person dies to himself and walks in the spirit, he becomes one with God, *in Christ,* and the only reason why a person's identity is relevant is because the identity of the new man is connected to who Christ is in The believer. This is not about believing in one's self (the old man) 🔵, this is about believing in Christ in you, in which your true identity is connected (the new man) 🔴 Galatians 2:20 - I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 5:24 - And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Ephesians 4:22-24 22That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 1 Corinthians 6:17 - But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. John 17:22-23 22And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

The build up was intense, the marketing fantastic (what is the matrix?) the trailers giving away nothing but building suspense... pure magic. Weve lost that art.
The moment where Neo just says "no" and stops the bullets and they drop harmlessly to the floor always gives me chills, but the moment where he put one hand behind his back and was still fending Smith off at a quarter of top speed made me roar with laughter.
I love the look on Morpheus' face at 1:37. His entire belief has been shaken to the point that he couldn't care less about the Sentinels breaking into the ship.
The whole scene here wouldn't have had half the impact it did, if not for Fishburne's amazing performance here. It's only when you literally see it in his face that all hope is LOST.
The chemistry between Carrie Anne-Moss and Keanu Reeves is almost unreal. I like how sparks were flying in the background when they kissed. Everything about this film is divine.

Instead we had some beautifully staged fight scenes, like the burly brawl and the Merovingian sword fight, but they were:
a. without any real tension, because Neo is always going to win, and
b. disappointingly tame given that by the end of the first film he can parry blows almost at the speed of light and destroy the most powerful enemies just by jumping into them.
@@thesprawl2361 exactly. Spot on.
Quite a simple point. You made a big deal out of it.
If you remember the oracle said he wasn't the one. That he had the gift but he was waiting for something. One of the things she suggested was his next life. At this moment he was basically reborn and had the knowledge that Trinity loved him. He did both of what the oracle mentioned. His next life and what he was waiting for. Love.
Great observation!!
She even says, "... maybe in another life", heavily foreshadowing this scene
'He's the one" probably one of the most legendary quote in the history of cinema
neO is the One
I saw this as a kid in theaters and I'm 36 now but I STILL get chills when Neo is revived, gets immediately shot at, and he simply turns and quietly declares "No." as he puts his hands up and slows down the bullets into harmless floating pellets. So....damn....good.

This is the moment Thomas Anderson died and Neo was born. One of the greatest cinematic moments ever, truly timeless. Like Neo, may we all learn to take the "me" custome off and embrace "myself".
I love it when Tank says "How"
He was reading the lines of code as they were being executed and could not fathom that Neo was breaking every rule within the Matrix. Easily my favorite minor character.
Arguably, this is Keanu's greatest movie ever. This movie made him a global icon. I remember queueing a very long line for a ticket in our local theater and stood for 2 hours to see it because there were no vacant seats in the theater. It was that good
A Buddhist teacher told me that when Neo sees the Matrix, it is a good example in pop culture of someone attaining enlightenment.

Let’s add some respect for Smith. He watched a man come back to life, stop bullets in mid air, and beat him with one hand. All three things are not possible…yet he still wanted the smoke.

I know exactly what you mean 🙏🏽
I love Keanu's acting of how apathetic Neo is to fighting Smith, like he sees right though his programming, predicting every move. It shows a man truly enlightened.
Man vs The Machine(s). Man or a man can win.

Google "The Grace of Keanu Reeves", amazing article about his career and how his limited range is actually his greatest strength.

Wow Alex, well said 🙏🏾
Everyone knows this truth but did you know its not easy as people think or say it is
Eloquent
Alex lin, what you're saying sounds nice, *but that is not what this scene is trying to explain.*
This is not about a "motivational speech".
This is not about believing in one's self (the old man) 🔵, this is about believing in Christ in you, in which your true identity is connected (the new man) 🔴
Galatians 2:20 - I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Galatians 5:24 - And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Ephesians 4:22-24
22That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
1 Corinthians 6:17 - But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
John 17:22-23
22And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

I remember watching this in the movie theater when he stopped the bullets and flawlessly and effortlessly blocked all of Smiths punches. the place erupted and popcorn was flying all over the place lmao
