It’s a VERY old prank. Your grandpa and his buddies would take you and your friends on a camping trip and tell you it was a “snipe hunt”. There is, unfortunately, no such bird (at least not in this case i know there are real snipes but this one isn’t real) They’d send you all off in different directions in the middle of the night in the woods and watch you all stumble around like dumbasses til they got bored and then either scare the hell out of you or just tell you it was fake and everybody has a nice laugh about it

We call them timberdoodles in northeast Oklahoma. I love hearing the whistle as they take off ,when my beagles flush one.
