This game always makes me think of that "They butchered my boy" line. It was so good on release, and got almost completely wrecked not long after by their decisions. Such a sad fate.
Exactly. In my opinion TERA used to be one of the best non-wow mmos, now it plays like a mobile game. As if the developers decided to sabotage it and make it as unenjoyable as humanly possible.
Man I remember first playing this once-fantastic game. Even though my PC was complete trash and the game constantly crashed, I played it to the death. I would wait for hours something to be spawned and dungeons' to be reset. And since I'm not native in English, I couldn't understand the game, yet I played it with immense joy. It was truly amazing. Quests, lots of grinding and dying... I miss it so much. When you said 'the game reached its limit', I totally agreed. You couldn't have said it better. Also, your reviews of games are fun. The way you tell about the situation of games are... let's say 'rich'. Thanks for the reviews.
I used to like this game so much. While somewhat repetitive progression, the areas were so beautiful, the music great, and soloing some of those BAMs was very challenging and fun. And the Nexus -- which at first I was so afraid to join, once I got my first taste of it... OMG, every day I would drop whatever I was doing in RL and start looking for a group I could join to play through it. My only regret was not discovering sooner how much fun it was. I was never a really good player for endgame dungeons, but I would always find people willing to accept my less than perfect skills, and we all had fun. And it was fun finding newbies and helping them with the "Blast from the Past" feature. I think the highlight of the game came with the Wounded World patch. Once "Fate of Arun" came out, I had the odd feeling that it was the beginning of the end. Dungeons got way harder, community got more elitist, the grind became an even bigger pain in the rear. By the time I could get my gear to a somewhat decent stage, a new patch would come in with new gear and more grind to level it up. I finally had to admit to myself that it was time to leave. I recently began playing again (solo) to do the Apex quest line more out of curiosity than anything, but now that I did as much as I could about it (not good for those 5-man dungeons), I stopped playing again. If a permanent, classic level-60 server were to appear, I would be back in a heartbeat.
My issue was that the gameplay didn't worked. I was a healer in a dungeon but either everyone dodged and I was useless or everyone got hit and was dead.
It's not so much the graphics have aged. After a while during f2p (after removal of Island of Dawn) they also downscaled the graphics. This game DID look extremely good and older versions of the game still do relatively speaking. But the downscale in graphics really brought it to a point where the graphics look aged.
@@sorax2871 I'm not sure the actual reasons, if I were to guess I'd say server based memory reasons. But the graphics were absolutely scaled down from initial release.
Man, this video brings back some nostalgia. TERA was one of my favorite games of all time. In fact, even nowadays the combat system has ruined Tab target games for me. I legit can't play them anymore. I picked up TERA when it first went free to play, dropped it cause the combat felt slow, then picked it back up and stuck with it. The combat got absolutely frantic and I loved it. Got hooked ever since. The main problem with TERA was the developers or publishers, I'm not sure which...Simply didn't have an end goal in mind. The game used to revolve around open world PVP with it's Vanarch system. Crafting used to play a key role and the world used to be bustling. Leveling wasn't lonely because you didn't run dungeons to level. You did the main story quest and side quests and then grinded BAMS in groups for the experience bonuses and safety. You had drama between guilds which started conflicts, people fighting over gathering spots and pvp gear actually had a use...Then they decided to add arenas. This was the beginning of the end. The update cycles after that removed the vanarch system so pvp became useless. Then they removed crafting and made gear start dropping in dungeons creating the gear treadmill, then finally removed it so you can only pvp at max level and marked everywhere as safe zones. The game really lost its soul with those changes imo and now..It's just a hollow shell of itself. It always had optimization issues but my god the combat was sublime...Fighting on Lake of Tears server with 7 of us Order of Enyo folks fighting against 30+ B R A Z I L guild members was the absolute highlight of my time in TERA. Such a shame how they massacred mah boy...Such a shame..
This just shows that the game was initially briliantly designed (from ex Arenanet devs I think - or was it from some ex OG Blizzard devs that split into multiple companies one founded Arenanet and the others Tera I think it was something like that), anyhow and then obviously someone else took over (Gameforge etc) with no fucking idea how to run the game and ruined everything. THE ORIGINAL DEVS ARE LONG GONE thats the problem and they were the only ones that knew how to make a good game, this game. Edit: Indeed it was Patrick Wyatt who was none other than the core part of OG Blizzard and one of the three co-founders of Arenanet later moving over to En Masse Entertainment as COO for Tera, very likely he had a big influence as to why the original game was good while still under his direction. He is truly one of the original pioneers responsible for several of great games of the past, just like Dustin Browder for example who was also involved in almost every good RTS you played from C&C to Starcraft - it is actually incredible how a one person can have such a big impact on the gaming industry. Yes, EA bought Westwood and ruined the franchise but people like Dustin and Patrick kept making good games, just elsewhere. And now of course notning makes sense anymore because some random ass greedy company with no creative freedom and passion bought this and is now ruining it because it has no fucking clue and does not care about a good game it only cares to make some money. When Tera had a soul and it was a good game, it was only when the original devs created it what you see now is just greed by investment companies. It is not about the games anymore, only profits.
As soon as I heard Gameforge took over I stopped the video, let me give you the answer, it's not worth it, Gameforge is the greediest European gaming publisher. Absolute subhumans.
Biggest mistakes of Tera: 1) Removing Island of Dawn intro. 2) Gender locked classes 3) Fashion coupons which removed the free cosmetic customization system of the game. Gameplay and combat was over the top and the graphics still are beautiful. By the way i was lucky enough to play the game before they make the road to level cap so easy. It was an amazing journey...
let me add more. outdated graphics, unreal engine 3, bad performance, elins race exist to please pedos and most weebs, female characters clothing is so stupidly oversexualized, voice acting, cinematics is so bad, glitches, gameforge launcher sucks ass,bad game support and lastly disgusting community.
@@fg2002id Adding to that: The entire start of the endgame at 65. You grind 3 dungeons you can enter 1 (or was it 3?) time per day to then finally have enough gearscore for the next dungeon that opens up and lo and behold: That dungeon drops the same gear you have already and the mats you needed to get to where you currently are at. I immedietaly quit. But lets be more general: 1. Elin gets any and all clases 2. cosmetics look ridiculous and not fitting 3. bad optimization 4. GameForge 5. All older dungeons are irrelevant 6. New and super out of reach upgrade system just dopped onto the game 7. GameForge 8. Constant server merges to the point there is only 1 left 9. Neglecting the story and all quests past level 18 and making them irrelevant and last but not least: 10. GameForge
@@PinxPer17 I got to play that very briefly back in the day (not that I knew it at the time) right before they removed it. I didn't go the full way through and I regret that every time TERA is brought up.
This used to be my favorite game back when I first played it. I was a complete beginner to mmos and casual player and just the scenery was enough to blow my mind. I never read any of the text and I dont know if it was good, but that's one of the reasons I enjoy mmos sometimes. I just go on and explore the world, seeing all the different places and monsters and cities and imagine why they are here or how they came to be. I hear Tera isnt that good for hardcore players but for a casual experience, I would reccomend it.
You might like bless unleashed its combat isnt as good but its not bad it gets really grindy as you get to level 20 and upgrading gear is a pain but other than that its not bad at all
I remember there was one achievement, the only way to get it was to NOT level. I remember you had to kill some Basilisks (early level BAMs) and if you did the math, the XP from them alone was almost enough to outlevel the achievement. So if you had account XP buffs or other bonuses you were screwed. I was managing to do it with an alt I created just to get thatachievement, but then I accidentally did something stupid like turn in a quest or something and blew it. Yeah, I really actually liked the slower levelling process.
Dayum I remember playing the exact moment it became f2p, prob the best mmo I've ever played. Then I think it was Tera Rising patch in 2014 which started the downfall in leveling experience as well as ever so growing item shop. Too bad, I wouldn't mind if it stayed p2p. Vanilla (2012-2013) server would be like a dream come true, I think I saw somewhere on github files from pre-f2p Tera waiting for someone to pick up the idea of pserver.
@@madscialex9030 They fucked up basically at the time where u drive by all early areas. Just getting the relics for the weapons and so on. Whole map deserted. Not one single person to level or quest with. Side quest suddenly disappeared.
My friend and I started TERA and loved it. The zones were beautiful, the storyline was cool and experience was just fast enough to keep us interested, but not so fast that we felt rushed. It took me months to get my first character (Celay a priest) to max level. We did dungeons multiple times because that was where the best gear was and it took multiple runs to get even half of it. Then the changes started. Faster levelling. Near the end for us we made a pair of new characters to see how fast to max level. Laughable. And all the dead zones. Beautiful zones, evocative zones, totally empty because well we out-levelled it. Add the best things to do were dungeons (3 runs per character) and that Isle of Monsters (rinse repeat) and it was a boring snooze-fest. We left just as they introduced the levelling system for armour and we were saying "yep-we're too casual to get to that top tier." And finally we were starting to get those elitist people who would look at your set and kick you because your gear was below "their" acceptable level. NOPE!
Sadly, the best days of tera were in 2014-2015...the game was way harder and different regions existed, it was an amazing journey....but its nice that you had a good time
All the empty leveling zones feel so hollow and sad. All that space, all the design effort.. no one sees it. So many stories from past patches I, as a max level character doing high end raids, knew nothing about. Nothing nothing.
The moment some other game models it's combat after tera and does it better is when it dies. It's like it's waiting for that final push into the grave.
I loved this on launch. I even got the collector edition with the pocket watch and stuff. I really wish this mmo was taken care of properly. The combat felt so fun back on release. I loved playing my Castanic warrior, flipping and spinning around like some terrifying bladedancer.
Same here, started when the game came out, first class was a warrior. What a hoot soloing BAMS (they weren't called that then), it would take 20 mins to kill them, miss one critical dodge and you had to start over. PvP was awesome too.
The combat was so fun.. I tried going back to it last week and my account had been deleted as En Masse was closed. Tried making a new character, but the game is obviously on life support. Once busy areas like Lumbertown are completely empty. Really sad.
Hearring that Lumbertown is empty made my day sad(lol)....I have a melancolic feeling about this game..it was such a good game back in the day..I loved it.In Lumberotwn and Crescentia, I met so many people and partied with them, and had so many 1v1's(especially when I was not max level)....I miss those days..but its dying sadly...
I have a funny story about Tera, one time I got lost while trying to do a quest and not just a where am I lost I accidentally went to a different continent
@@starluna03 yeah it was very early in the game and I couldn't defeat any of the monsters so I just went up to random people asking if they can help me
i remember when tera had loads of ppl, back when the lvling took a while and you pretty much learned the lore as you had to do the story quests to lvlup. damn it was funny back then at every point. now its all end game and there are some poopy ppl at end game lvl. havent played it in a few years, but its a decent enough game still...if you have friends to play with cause as i mentioned, there are some poopy ppl you have to run dungeons with >_>
Yeah, back before warriors had the ability to block. It was a hopping community. I think the Priest in TERA was the best healer class of any MMO I've ever played.
60 cap lvl was best the years when u spamming manaya's core & wonderholme Hardmode ((the crazy shandra manaya & one eye jack & bandersnatch)) for NightForge PVE gear and spammin corssairs stronghold for NightForge PVP gear i remember i had full Nightforge PVE gear and was rushing for PVP gear on CS.. then new cap came and game totally screwed... old but gold days
@@tyliokhudon3134I always loved creating new mystic characters and as soon as I unlocked the totem and minion then I went to the highest level and just kited monsters for a long ass time until I finally killed them.

@@JoshStrifeHayes He is but you actually give a level of detail he doesn’t. You look into the systems while he doesn’t, I have respect for the man but you keep up with what’s happening in the game you’re playing while he just lazily goes through it
I was a founder of this game, I remember being so incredibly stoked about how awesome it looked! It met all my expectations with the exception of crafting, which was crap, but it was still there. I loved beating up bams and running dungeons. It was the game I really learned to tank, I ran an elin lancer and had tons of fun. I played for nearly 2 years before I was lured away by some other games and a friend that quit at the same time as I did. I tried to go back a couple times but it wasn't the same, things changed, bams got overhauled and the level cap went up. I miss the fun times I had in Tera, good memories and lots of friends I had there. As I got older I've learned to just appreciate the past and not lose too much sleep over not being able to go back. Now I focus on making more memories in other games, lately playing FFXIV. RIP Tera, you were a great game.
I've been playing this game for 8 years as pvp player and i can say "It is love and hate at the same time". It's a love that you always miss, it's a hate that you can't leave
I started playing Tera with my friend not long after launch, back before it went free to play. we were a mystic/priest combo and it took us forever to level, but it was a lot of fun and we never had trouble getting a into a group for dungeons, back when mystics were considered more of a support to the priest rather than a healer on their own. we hit level cap of 60 around the time it went free to play, and made some friends in game and started a guild. it was so much fun, struggling through the Nexus frights despite how laggy our old pcs would get, 3-manning lvl 60 BAMs whenever we wanted to just hang around and chat, and getting way too competitive in the battleground. then things started to change... BAM's were nerfed, the cash shop felt more and more intrusive, new classes were added that just didn't feel balanced... we all slowly left. I miss those times, but the game has changed too much, degraded too much... and my friend and I have been searching for a game that feels similar, but we've yet to find one whose combat feels as satisfying
Same here I played it when it started, liked the combat and the story that was there then. Going free to play has ruined the game, as they added all the weird cosmetic stuff. Then to keep it all going they added more and more over the top classes. I look into it from time to time,as I still like the combat. It is satisfying to take down a huge BAM on your own. Played Lancer, Mage, and the Swordfigther. Tried a bit some of the new classes like the gunner. Enjoyed the Lancer the most, can easily solo and with his blocks and stuns a big help in a group.
@@thomaskurz5617 haha, I hated the Lancer, but that was because I'm in Australia so the best ping I could ever hope for was 300ms. it was just too hard to get the block timing right with that, especially as I was on an old laptop at the time. but yes, taking down a BAM on your own back then always felt like an amazing achievement. I've never been one to complain about games being casual player friendly, but it felt like with changes to difficulty they just made it too easy... there was only like one or two BAM's that were mandatory for continuing the main questline if I remember correctly, so making them soloable made sense... but all the others? they should have been left as a challenge for those who wanted it. after the BAM nerf it was only worth it to get a group of three and take on BAM's 10 levels higher than you, because the exp gain was nerfed too, meaning that a fast kill from a group or a slower kill from soloing one wasn't even worth it when you could just get far better exp by gathering up a large group of mobs and taking them all out at once. for any experienced player the BAM's were reduced to set dressing
A very nice video, but wanted to clarify one potential issue with your point made about the Steam player count. If you checked steam charts then there are 2 Tera games there. One indeed has like 2-3 people online as an average, but the correct one is doing much better (700ppl on average online). Not that it makes Tera an extremely popular game, neither really changes the conclusion on whether the game is worth playing or not. However, this inaccurate information may scare off potential players from trying the game so thought it makes sense to point it out.
As someone who played Tera back around 2013-14, having played for over 2k hours then stopping, I lost my account during the migration, so everything is gone, achievements, pets, mounts. At least I did not pay a penny. So I decided to restart and play with Mystic(support) as it was my main back in the day: The game has become so boring. I remember when they introduced the new starting area(which I do not like), now even that is cut in half mission wise, as it can be done really quickly. And that can be said about the game. Back then you had to do quests to level up, to progress. The dungeons were hard, you had to do the tactics, boss mechanics etc. Getting better equipment was important even early on. Nowadays its all fast. between level 20-60 you do a dungeon once and you already have your equipment/XP to advance to the next dungeon, The dungeons went from 5 party members to 3. Good luck finding a tank, as barely anyone plays it. Not like you need it as 2 dps can easily steamroll the dungeons. Heck you might not even need a healer. It is sad. I am sad. I really liked the leveling process. The dungeons, the bosses, all the different mechanics.
the only real tanking was kiting since there wasnt a single tank knowing how to aggro because they had no brains to think of their own playstyle and were just following an incovenient for partying one from the forums
Tanking & healing felt so good in the game, don't remember name of the class but a healing class just threw out healing orbs & you had to shout at people to pick them up.
That dungeon grinding at 65 on console has to be the most tedious shit I've ever done. And free players can only do so many dungeons a day. Wtf kind of mobile game bullshit is that?
Man this game was awesome from 2012-end of 2015ish. Then it kinda started going down. I miss the old remodel system and Nexus. It sucks that if you didn't migrate to gameforge your character got deleted (as in my case). I've been looking for a decent MMO for a little while now, might go back to Vindictus.
I would definitely come back too. I miss running along as my scanitly clad mystic next to my friend's grizzled man priest dressed in completely gold robes XDD
For me was the tipping point when they changed gearing system to upgrade only. It was nice to get into the game, get the casual gear and be able to join all dungeons for the hunt of the better casual gear, while the hardcore players did the VM path. Now everyone is forced to do these extremly expensive upgrades and new player need to farm lower dungeons to get decent gear. But you often get left behind in these dungeons because no one wants to deal with your low damage.
This game looks fun. I'd love to play it beyond the tutorial but I can't get invested in a game that doesn't give you enough character slots to try out even 1/4th of the classes and 4 of them are gender/race locked, and that doesn't really look to have any prospects for the future. I'd love to be wrong and to have the developers creating something amazing that would revitalize it, but that seems beyond unlikely.
Tera Veteran upgrade solves that, you still have to invest all your characters of all possible classes in at least two servers. I personally barely manage one character at a time to enjoy.
I just decided to download it and play a little. I remember playing Tera back when I was 14 or so and hopping from one free to play MMO to the next with my friends and we had a lot of fun. I still have shitty old art of my Elin character somewhere. Recently I've been craving a flashy MMO something that looks cool and Tera is exactly that coupled with a tiny bit of nostalgia. I kinda miss the games I used to play but I also really really don't.
I would love to see a video like this of CABAL Online. It is pretty old but there is so much ppl playing it.. Keep the great work gentleman, greetings from Argentina.
This game should have died 2 years ago. Now it's just trying to stay relevant. All they are doing is continuing to recycle the same shit over and over. If you look through the dungeons as well as the weapon skins themselves, its literally the old ones with new names.
tera is a game i've always had a passing interest in but never felt confident enough to dive deeply into. i've only ever made it to level 35 or so before getting distracted. but hearing the way you talk about it, highlighting more of the positive aspects of the game and reasons why someone could enjoy it, that's given me a push to try again. thanks for making such a cool video about an older mmo in 2021. 💯
This looks like peak mindless MMO play that would be super enjoyable when chilling with friends on discord. Outside of that, seems just okay enough to keep veteran players. Sad to see a game stall/fall from any former popularity.
Ask a game publisher if they'd rather have a thriving community of free players or a tiny community of loyal pay whales, guess which one they'll choose.
@@LikaLaruku thriving community of free players has a huge chance of having whales in it without breaking the gameplay. take Azur Lane for example. the game is still thriving after all these years.
it was on life support before it even got launched when it was in enmasse since enmasse was charged billions as fines for stealing the codes from ncsoft's lineage 3 and launch it with bluehole studios as tera. good thing enmasse got shut down, they reaped what they sowed
Some of the best memories I have ever had were on TERA. So many friends and great people I met there. I send you all my respect, love, and all good wishes. Shit, what was the name of the server I used to play now ? It was in EU, then merged with some other servers.
Some personal stuff I’ve noticed playing good/bad -haven’t waited over 4 minutes for a dungeon -personally had a bad experience with players, just rude if your a new player you’ll get absolutely ignored. -grinding sucks that’s basically the endgame -new updates, they at least add new or different dungeons. -new events fashion coupons are gone but a lot of people don’t do the events, or don’t like to do gathering mining etc to get the halos etc for free. -pvp kinda sucks the people who will pvp are usually just all they do. -I will say though the recent events have sucked (no actual outfits) -if you want clothing -it’s expensive the prices they put on their items (yes it’s ftp but they legit have a 50$ bundle that basically offers a mount and a title lmao) Overall I think tera will be around I estimate 2 years until a new mmo will then even take away the veterans who play tera. Until then, it’s still fun to play even without people .. you don’t have to be friends to get Dungeons. P.s it’s funny because tera needs new players but many will tell you how bad your rounds etc are in surgeons, however they’ll never tell you a good setup they much rather belittle and make you not want to play at all, and you can’t say much- because if they do they will literally stay in whatever Dungeon you have with them and they will purposely do bad, even though you didn’t intentionally mean to, and that’s probably gonna happen, be prepared, don’t smart off just ignore it. I forgot to mention for outfits there is brokers where players can put up items for coins, if your new it’s so tempting but you neeeeed those coins for your gear and most of the broker items are unrealistic prices for newer players, which is why many quit it seems impossible to get to the level or look cool like other players, it sucks because you wanna look cool like them but not pay hundreds...
My brother and I boarded the TERA train when it first came out - perfectly coinciding with a shared WoW lull. I played... whatever class had the shield and lance, he played something ranged. Memory fuzzy. Anyway, we discovered pretty early how bananas the game mechanics were and how easy they were to push outside of intended use. We had a blast 2-manning all the 5-player content for a decent challenge, (I even soloed a fair bit of it on the side,) and we also terrorized the early world pvp scene together. Well, like, reverse-terrorized - we killed gankers and avenged guild mates. I'm not sure why we got bored of it, but we stopped for awhile. When we came back some months later, the game had been heavily patched, and we couldn't get away with half of what we'd done before. It felt neutered, afterward, and that novelty was gone. It was great fun for those first few weeks, at least. In my MMO history, it burned the brightest and fizzled the fastest.
This saddens me, Tera is one of the most beautifull games i ever played, yes character design is,well, south Korean and we all know what that means, but the world is one of most well designed worlds i ever seen and it still holds up and Tera is out there for a long time. back then the story wasn t to deep but it could hold and, as you said, the combat was great, in dungeons, world events and even in PVP, and there was a lot to do in endgame....a lot of that is not even ingame now...i feel about Tera what felt about Aion, long ago...there was a game, a good game...then Gameforge came in and then there was no more, end of story
@@biome3 well, i m not sure whatever GF has control over but i ve player both TERA and AION, both with GF now, both ruined by their p2w, but not only that, when it cames to AION i actually tried the chinese verson of the game and it s so diferent from what we are playing it actually hurts (im not talking about both EU and USA are behind in expansions/patchs), so...
@@sophiastorm8616 yeah tera isnt much different, gameforge have no control over the gear or what dungeons are in the game, and it's only one patch behind korea
many years ago I played tera. absolutely loved the game. Mained healer, and the job of the healer was to NEVER EVER get hit, because if you got flagged as "in-combat" your mana regen went down, movement speed went down, and cast times went up, making your heals essentially useless. While everyone else in the party was playing generic beat-em-up mmo PvE, I was playing bullet hell with micromanagement, I loved it. A class with two big-ass gauntlets and a lot of punching came out that more-so focused on the "perfect block" mechanic than any previous class, tried it out and absolutely loved playing it in PvP. I lauded it as possibly the most balanced "new class" on-entry (requiring the least hot-fixing on release to make it not OP or even viable at all) of any MMO that featured pvp. Enjoyed that for a couple months, but then because reasons, I quit playing. 3 years later I hopped onto tera again, planned on jumping STRAIGHT into pvp to get my sea-legs back, but, oh what's this, a giant jumping "EVENT!" icon? clicking on it, it was PvP, "PERFECT!" I thought...... it put me into a 4 way 3v3v3v3 matchup where you were transmogrified into a baby ogre in a diaper, if you got hit you'd get stunned, and sway back and forth crying, you could throw a binki at someone, reach into your diaper and throw.. dirt.. at someone, or try to knock away their binki/feces with your baby rattle. I stopped and stared in awe at how far the game had fallen, speechless for over a minute, slowly moved my fingers over to the ctrl+alt9del.. force closed the game mid match... uninstalled, and never looked back.
The PC and console version are damn near 2 different games. TBH the console is better but. its console that's the bad side. Unless you have a next gen console
I remember leaving after they butchered the consumables and completely removed Alchemy (I was a maxed out alchemist). It was really fun back then but endgame boils down to "grind dungeons to grind more dungeons and wait for more dungeons to be added".
i played this game with my friends in 2016, way before they removed alot of the leveling process and it was sooo much fun.. to this day i dont know any mmo with a combat system as fluid and exciting as this one. the zones were also rlly atmospheric and pretty, i wish i could relive that time :")
I've been playing BDO a long time and been looking for a bit of a switch in scenery (not quitting BDO). This is nice vid to kinda tell as i was thinking about Tera. I think i'll give it a shot. Not exactly looking for a story just something fun and flashy. :D
Peak TERA was 2011-2016. Back when you had to do all side quests to level up slowly, back when campfire dungeon chats were a thing, back when BAM's took group and minutes to kill. Back when Wonderholme was great. Still one of the best tanking and healing experiences is any game. Good times.
Ninjas of Love leader here. An amazing game that I left once the rest of the guild did. Then I come back to find En Masse gone and seeing all these comments, it hurts my nostalgic heart to see it fall like this. What a great game in its prime and one day we’ll get the sky castle.
In my opinion, TERA is the best dungeon oriented action combat mmo. And this game isn't actually suited for casual players since most of the actual end game dungeons require a lot of mechanical and mental skill. Most endgame dungeons can't be cleared efficiently without reading a guide or dedicating hours of time to learn it. I could also say that this game is by far the least p2w game I have ever seen. Money literally can't get you anywhere. People with starting lvl 70 gear can out dps a person who has max gear with just pure skill. This is because casual players usually dont learn their class properly. They continue using spacebar which is completely unreliable in endgame dungeons. I'd say that if you want a game that gives you mechanically challenging content, flashy combat, and if you are willing to spend months to learn a class propeely, TERA is definitely worth playing. But if you can't take dying a lot in dungeons getting 1 hit by bosses, and just want to fight sandbag enemies and roam around doing quests in the open world, TERA isn't the game for you.
least p2w? have you actually played game yourself? only thing you are required to do is to lvl until lvl 70, then go to broker buy gear, buy enchant mats in cash shop and you are maxed out without doing a single endgame dungeon. It's not about being a good player it's about in game content giving you trash as a reward or if there is a good loot its rng and you can run 20+ dungeons a day and get nowhere. People don't mind the grind if at the end of the day there's progress, you can grind for weeks and lose all mats and gold by enchanting bczu of the rng and you are back at where you started.
@@jmbeam by not being p2w i meant that you can get the same gear and power as people who blow cash by just grinding. 5 months is all it takes to get max gear. The game does not force you to pay, and you don't actually have to. Especially now in the latest patch, they fixed rng. I played this game for 10 months now and i have 4 characters with almost max gear in the previos patch all being geared simultaneously, and i havent even spent a single dollar.
@@Crowscare829 maybe you are blessed by the rng, cuz from half year of daily playing (and having alts too) grinding all 16 tasks on 4 alts, during enchant event couldn't pass +13 on main, let alone alts. Getting +10 Kaia is easy, but getting +15, the amount of gold, feedstock, improved feedstock, repair items that you need is a lot if tera isn't your second job. So I will agree with you, if someone wants to play game and invest time in it Tera is good cuz that someone is gonna be in for a lot of grinding and with bad rng grindning won't end ever. If someone wants to have fun and log in after work for few hours of fun, avoid tera at all cost.
Excellent content. Your way of in depth analysis is top-notch and has really helped me make up my mind about several mmos. Could I nominee two games for your worst mmos series? Skyforge and Champions Online
My wife and I used to play this all the time. We fell out of it for whatever reason about 2 years ago, then wanted to pick it back up only to find out all of our stuff was gone from the migration. =( sad times. Still a fun game, but wow to how many things have changed in here!
I just hit my 800 quest achievement :D and also there is... somewhere in the forums a complete story for the Lore, which is actually really interesting.. :D there is so much to this game and ive played for so many years and still find new things to this day :D
[Edit: Keeping in mind this was years ago and I might well have totally misread it back in the day much less remember it right now] The biggest thing I remember from the lore that sticks with me was the idea that the Elves used to be racist empire builders thought to be unstoppable. Then they finally ran into an alliance of Poppori, Elin and Humans that fought their army to a standstill and utterly shattered their pride in the doing. Causing them to abandon the world due to a crisis of identity, faith and culture that lasted a long time, so the next time their army marched it was to face the alien invasion and by then their prowess was an old legend in the vein of Gilgamesh today. Again, a seemingly unstoppable force was halted, and (ironically) again it broke them. But then they signed on to the Valkyon Alliance and people actually thought "We might really win!" That rough idea sticks with me as a great example of what many fantasy settings need to do with their elves, take the classic trope and make a point of breaking it without abandoning it. Hell I put together a character backstory I still remember for my Warrior centered on the idea of a Sorceress giving up all her magic for one last mortal lifetime to make up by fighting the invasion for all the horrors she did back in the expansion days. Got some fun RP in when random people found me sitting by a campfire and asked why I was there. Was good times years back.
@@Sorain1 yeah it's quite good for an mmo story, although when you write it all out like that it starts to sound like their budget versions of the elves from the Witcher.
Returning NA players! You have to download game from steam, but you have to download Gameforge version. Then at the start up you get to chose NA or Europe server. EME is dead, Gameforge took over Tera in late 2020.
I played years ago until they added the +15 system and i spent 2mil gold failing +11 over a hundred tries. Name was Megiddo i was quite well known on my server. They did this to themselves, until then it was all cosmetic but without selling those cosmetics in game for gold there was little to no chance to full upgrade your gear. I didn't sell anything, i played the market and was a juggernaut but even that was too much for me failing so many times. TLDR They instituted an upgrade system with no top so there was no limit on how much you tried upgrading, you could literally fail indefinitely.
I missed out on playing TERA but I've been playing on a private server, Starscape, without using the level up voucher. It's been really enjoyable so far, genuinely sad it's been shut down.
If only they hadn't removed like EVERY piece of awesome content of the game (like the whole leveling zones, and every zone/part of the zone to be relevant, using gear for transmog, Nexus, Older dungeons, the original starting island, having to do dungeons for gear (and NOT items to upgrade the gear you get for free, etc, etc, etc) Yeah if that was still in the game it would be worth to still play.
@@Sabriell Even in years past, for as long as I've played the game acquiring gear takes virtually no runs and most runs are spent enchanting it. The same goes for every other MMO I've played afaik.
@@Sabriell back in the days when awakening and enchanting weapon from +13 to 15 was hell lot of fun, especially with those edgy weapon glows. And we will need to craft our own weapon by gathering mats such as lucid set
I played it for few weeks (in 2010, but my account was 6-7 years old), and I had some fun I have to say. I mainly played dungeons, and I've been surprised to meet a lot of new players. When I said "new player here, tell me if I have to know something" (before a boss), someone else almost always replied "I'm first timer as well". Playing dungeons was fine, nice combat system, the difficulty was at the right level to let you feel cool, without never really asks you to be knowledgeable of any particular mechanic. Distributing the loot at the end of a dungeon was terribly boring though, it took more than the whole fight, especially if someone quit the instance. The story... yeah, I completed all the main quests but I didn't really follow it. I've been quite annoyed by all the NPCs that kept teleporting to talk to you, every few meters, while I seemed to be the only dumb on that planet, unable to teleport me. Definitely fun, for a week, especially if you play it with other 2 friends (most of the dungeons are for 3 players), but after reaching the level cap, the real grind starts: only 1 real dungeon is available, the others are either too hard with your equipment or the bosses die with 1 single shot. GamgeForge is currently looking for a game designer for TERA, so probably they want to try to revamp it a bit.
Just noting that I am one of the "jaded veterans" mentioned here. If anyone wants to know anything about the current state of NA PC I'd be happy to answer any questions.
@@mortis3732 Slowly in decline, I recently joined Tera, but you're actually playing instances with cross server matched teammates. Tried BG once but due to lack of people I never tried again. There's a blow of fresh air once in a while when is the monthly double gold event from instances, some things take a week or more to sell in the broker though. It has problems. My mate is constantly complaining on gear failing to enchant, but it's a grind as in any game. He can't grasp the concept of getting more materials and enchanting in bulk. That somehow gives more satisfaction than doing it on the moment you get the materials. He's consumed of the game nonetheless. Got at least 5 characters and doing all sorts of stuff with all of them while I concentrate on my Berserker fully. Hard instances are veteran exclusive, last night he got kicked the moment he got in as he was rookie. And it's hard to find good vibrant guild. Tutorials online are of no use as it's always old content. Not sure what you got used to, I like the current state of the game, maybe you remember something else. There's also shutdowns on the go and server maintenances out of schedule all the time. I can't believe they just pull the plug like that. No notice, no sorry. Sometimes even in prime server time.
great game. Used to play it back in 2015-2017 as warrior & archer. The end game content was boring thought so decided to leave - but the "fights" are what's best in this game. The "none target" system compared to WOW is amazing. If you love combat system, TERA is one of something you gonna enjoy - not sure about end game atm because you need quite a few people to actually get on dungeon. Currently playing Black Desert Online and has no dungeons so really enjoy this :)
Played it back in 2017ish, and it was fun for a while. I really wanted to explore the lore of it and follow storyline but like I got really confused by the game itself. Kinda wanna give it another run now though! Thanks for the video!
Elin Tank Warrior was my religion and main playstyle at the time. I remember training for those combos and everything hating on the spacebar players for playing mindlessly. Kind of sad to see the game at this current state. It's comparable to BDO's combat but much more casual. It's what opened my eyes to action combat on PC and I have yet to see another game match it (besides BDO). Glad to see a video on it in 2021!
This game's exploration was so mesmerizing the world and regions felt so large, and the visuals/designs/aesthetics/atmosphere was incredible. Imagine the potential if they added stuff like random encounters/events and hidden chests/loots, kinda like Skyrim... Other than Aura Kingdom, FFXIV and maybe 1 or 2 other MMOs, there's never really been much of an MMO that surpassed Tera in exploration for me. Most MMOs either have outdated graphics or generic looking areas. They only have content no more than the regular main or side quests
As far as exploration goes, I'd highly recommend Genshin Impact. The first time you explore any area, especially at the start of the game, it's absolutely amazing - the verticality of some areas is a joy to experience (and you never get a mount/flying mount, so it's always a challenge to get high up for the first time). That said, fair warning about the gatcha aspect, but if you have a strong sense of F2P (i.e. you can control your spending), you'll do fine. Also, waifus/husbandos.
I feel ,like any game that has a reasonably coherent visual design, but _also_ has completely random cash shot bullshit cosmetics, should also include a "no bullshit cosmetics" toggle, which causes all characters wearing items flagged as "bullshit" to end up in some more generic fancy costume piece instead. GW2 almost has this, but it only applies to PvP, and is more about making sure that tiny characters aren't harder to see.
I am thinking about downloading it. I want to play a mmorpg where there’s people to interact with. I feel like a lot of mmorpgs don’t have that anyone. Every is just playing by themselves and afking in town. I want to play with others, engage and interact. Playing alone is boring

Actually just started the game a week ago ! And yea..the combat is amazing but u rly just outlvl everything ! There are quests in the area u get to after the " tutorialarea" ..and its from lvl 10 to lvl 15..but when u leave the Tutorialarea you are alrdy far above lvl 10..its strange :( And i would really recomment to do the yellow quests ! They are a lot of fun and u rly get to discover the different maps and areas ! If u just follow the main story u legit just see half the game and reach max lvl after 2 days of playing :/ The people that ive met so far are all suuuper kind and fun tho :) amazing community !
Their newest addition is if you return to the game with a max level character: 1. they throw the gen1 of the newest equipment what you can upgrade with new materials (but you can turn your old mats in for new ones so its still easy to go till gen2-3) 2. run the only dungeon what is unlocked for you like 500 times to gather materials to upgrade your gen2-3 gear (then you can unlock more dungeons but the first is still the best because it takes like 5 minutes if there is someone fully geared) 3. idk got bored in the 2.
I am still playing TERA with Gameforge and it's fun. Hmm pretty sure any or most MMORPGs lore are a bit vague or all over the place because of the many quests but if you follow the story in Tera it's actually good. Almost on par with Guildwars or FF XIV or Lineage. And by the way, how it is called "questionable character designs'? when in fact this is an eastern MMORPG and its fantasy lol. What was your basis of it? I think the character design is what made this game shine as well. It's prettyu anime-ish with westernize influence at least on the armors but damn, that's what makes titles awesome. The game tend to experiment because Tera is not your average MMORPG with generic designs unlike other MMO out there.
The combat was the best I've ever experienced in a game. Especially as a healer! It was SO much fun! Loved this game. Played it since CB and had the best time. Kelsaik and Queen wow that was some fight! My group was the first to kill it on our server.. we were kings back then LOL. Loved hardmodes so much! Then the nerfs came and it was all too easy. Good old memories! :')
I used to play Tera from f2p launch for a few years. The combat was good. Really, really good. Like, I still consider it the best of it's kind. And the style I had no issues with. But there's only so many times one can run the same dungeons. Removing some of them to cycle in others sure didn't help.
I'd love to see you do a similar video for Black Desert Online. It seems very niche as an MMO given its focus on grinding and pvp but it manages to maintain mostly positive reviews and a growing player base. It has its issues though, "p2w", punishing rng enhancements, no traditional endgame pve, etc. I'd love to see your thoughts on it some day!
@@biome3 Dunno about the NA version but if we're talking about EU: Not plural, its not servers, its server. There's only one left. At least the last time I played it in.......2019? 2018?
I remember back when I played me and my buddy were at the end game grind and we were ready for the next set of items, only I needed gloves and he needed boots. So of course we do the dungeon that drops these items and it had already taken us about a month to get the rest of the set, and cause loots is based on a dice roll system, some elitist hardcore player was hogging most of the loot and getting lucky rolls too. Both the boots and the gloves dropped during that run and he took them both and when we complained that we've been grinding for a while and he was already a full two sets ahead, his response was "you shouldn't expect to get everything instantly, I need gold." We spent a whole two months trying to grind that set because of that one elitist player and it practically killed the game for us, on top of the ridiculously time gated grind as well.
I've been playing this game for 7 years. It has unique combat system. If you want to play it, i can tell you " Mystel is most crowded server". Play there. Other servers seem empty
This game always makes me think of that "They butchered my boy" line. It was so good on release, and got almost completely wrecked not long after by their decisions. Such a sad fate.

"Look how they massacred my boy"
Haha yeah I miss old school Nexus too. What were some of your char names?
My issue was that the gameplay didn't worked. I was a healer in a dungeon but either everyone dodged and I was useless or everyone got hit and was dead.

oh damn, the graphics are starting to age more than I anticipated. TERA looked so good in the past..
It's not so much the graphics have aged. After a while during f2p (after removal of Island of Dawn) they also downscaled the graphics. This game DID look extremely good and older versions of the game still do relatively speaking. But the downscale in graphics really brought it to a point where the graphics look aged.
@@gboybig why downscaled
@@sorax2871 I'm not sure the actual reasons, if I were to guess I'd say server based memory reasons. But the graphics were absolutely scaled down from initial release.

the graphics definitely looked better than this before.
HAHAHAH THE LAST PARAGRAPH. brilliant comment

I played this once a looooong time ago, the game has changed so much and I'm not sure I wish to return, although I do miss it.
I'm glad you gave an honest review:) Really enjoyed the video!
Lul
I downloaded it today and I hope it will be a pretty good experience. A lot of people say it’s bad but I’ll try it nonetheless
As someone who played Tera back around 2013-14, having played for over 2k hours then stopping, I lost my account during the migration, so everything is gone, achievements, pets, mounts. At least I did not pay a penny. So I decided to restart and play with Mystic(support) as it was my main back in the day:
The game has become so boring.
The tanking in this game was amazing.
everything in this game was amazing, but they ruined it ):
the only real tanking was kiting since there wasnt a single tank knowing how to aggro because they had no brains to think of their own playstyle and were just following an incovenient for partying one from the forums
"but getting materials is SOOOO Easy for endgame weapons!!" Literally the excuse i get for ALL of them.
@@Zarryon12 id rather have higher rarity for materials and no limit in entries. screw you modern asian games and your mental stamina feature
I remember this game fondly it was the MMO I put the most time into. If they ever do a classic server I could see myself coming back...
I personally barely manage one character at a time to enjoy.
i was honestly downloading the game while watching the video, and then i got all my vibes killed and uninstalled it :'c
Relatable "I kinda miss the games I used to play but I also really really don't."
Great analysis as always Josh. I wanted to jump back into Tera and you helped me not waste a bunch of time.
Sad to see a game stall/fall from any former popularity.
i still have dreams about the island of dawn intro sometimes :(

Shit, what was the name of the server I used to play now ? It was in EU, then merged with some other servers.
Some personal stuff I’ve noticed playing good/bad
-haven’t waited over 4 minutes for a dungeon
-personally had a bad experience with players, just rude if your a new player you’ll get absolutely ignored.
-grinding sucks that’s basically the endgame
-new updates, they at least add new or different dungeons.
-new events fashion coupons are gone but a lot of people don’t do the events, or don’t like to do gathering mining etc to get the halos etc for free.
-pvp kinda sucks the people who will pvp are usually just all they do.
-I will say though the recent events have sucked (no actual outfits)
-if you want clothing -it’s expensive the prices they put on their items (yes it’s ftp but they legit have a 50$ bundle that basically offers a mount and a title lmao)
Overall I think tera will be around I estimate 2 years until a new mmo will then even take away the veterans who play tera.
I still can't believe you single-handedly killed this game.
Rest in peace TERA. I played the hell out of you on ps4 and wish i had the chance on pc now that i have one

Should you play TERA in 2021?
*Goes under the map*
many years ago I played tera. absolutely loved the game. I stopped and stared in awe at how far the game had fallen, speechless for over a minute, slowly moved my fingers over to the ctrl+alt9del.. force closed the game mid match... uninstalled, and never looked back.
ughh this makes me wanna download and play Tera again

I remember leaving after they butchered the consumables and completely removed Alchemy (I was a maxed out alchemist).
It was really fun back then but endgame boils down to "grind dungeons to grind more dungeons and wait for more dungeons to be added".
If you read the dialogue by quest characters the story is pretty cool although now it's mostly just running around helping people.
i played this game with my friends in 2016, way before they removed alot of the leveling process and it was sooo much fun.. to this day i dont know any mmo with a combat system as fluid and exciting as this one. the zones were also rlly atmospheric and pretty, i wish i could relive that time :")

Good times.
Gonna play through the story so I can see all the world of Tera has to offer (also making a sexy character)
See this is why I subbed a long time ago, even your old videos may be relevant again.
Oh wow Tera Online!
Miss those days fighting the clown....
Ninjas of Love leader here. An amazing game that I left once the rest of the guild did. Then I come back to find En Masse gone and seeing all these comments, it hurts my nostalgic heart to see it fall like this. What a great game in its prime and one day we’ll get the sky castle.
Combat in this game was a ton of fun. I had thousands of hours , multiple guilds.
If anyone has months to spare to learn a game, i would advise they learn a different game. Months invested into tera wont often be worth it.
least p2w? have you actually played game yourself? only thing you are required to do is to lvl until lvl 70, then go to broker buy gear, buy enchant mats in cash shop and you are maxed out without doing a single endgame dungeon.

Lol i honestly didnt know Tera was an acronym for this game until your video.
I just hit my 800 quest achievement :D and also there is... somewhere in the forums a complete story for the Lore, which is actually really interesting.. :D there is so much to this game and ive played for so many years and still find new things to this day :D
I agree, then put care into the lore when the fame first came out and for about 4 or 5 years after that
[Edit: Keeping in mind this was years ago and I might well have totally misread it back in the day much less remember it right now]
The biggest thing I remember from the lore that sticks with me was the idea that the Elves used to be racist empire builders thought to be unstoppable. But then they signed on to the Valkyon Alliance and people actually thought "We might really win!"
That rough idea sticks with me as a great example of what many fantasy settings need to do with their elves, take the classic trope and make a point of breaking it without abandoning it.
I tried playing Tera a few times in the past, and even as an inveterate weeb, it bored me.
The recent update gives you high tier gear and accessories upon reaching lvl 65 and you have to run dungeons for materials to upgrade it
@@minilovergirl yeah and how boring does that sound? XD
@@Sabriell Even in years past, for as long as I've played the game acquiring gear takes virtually no runs and most runs are spent enchanting it. The same goes for every other MMO I've played afaik.

Veteran here as well and havent logged in for years. Are servers and playerbase dead af?
I loved tera, still do since 2013 i don't see myself leaving...amazing game to play
Is there much active players?
@@kengkeejthao4666 Yes, It's still doing fine
do u play on PC?
I am thinking about downloading it. I want to play a mmorpg where there’s people to interact with. I feel like a lot of mmorpgs don’t have that anyone. Every is just playing by themselves and afking in town. I want to play with others, engage and interact. Playing alone is boring
If you guys are on console me and my two friends just started playing, we are nearly lvl 60 eu server
Valkyrie brawler and mystic
Looking for people to play with aswell we can start our own casual guild too if anyone wants also help is welcome as we are still learning the ropes :)
I played Tera back in the day and not that long ago, and both times I just sort of got bored and uninstalled.
when are you gonna make a MMO tier list? i NEED it!
It was good, had 4k hours on it through steam.
Their newest addition is if you return to the game with a max level character:
1. they throw the gen1 of the newest equipment what you can upgrade with new materials (but you can turn your old mats in for new ones so its still easy to go till gen2-3)
2. run the only dungeon what is unlocked for you like 500 times to gather materials to upgrade your gen2-3 gear (then you can unlock more dungeons but the first is still the best because it takes like 5 minutes if there is someone fully geared)
3. idk got bored in the 2.
Not to mention they always rework the gear system 2-3 times a year
I miss playing tera I havent played since 2019 😢. I cant play it anymore cuz I have a trash laptop.
I’ll give it a try why not. I like punching big ass monsters in the face!
Can you make an account?
I'd love to see you do a similar video for Black Desert Online. It seems very niche as an MMO given its focus on grinding and pvp but it manages to maintain mostly positive reviews and a growing player base. It has its issues though, "p2w", punishing rng enhancements, no traditional endgame pve, etc. I'd love to see your thoughts on it some day!
2 people logged in through Steam? I think your looking at the EME version that doesn't work anymore, because I see 600
Oh wow 600...what a large engaging population
@@TheBlueberryEffect through steam... more use the gameforge launcher, both play on the same servers
@@biome3 Dunno about the NA version but if we're talking about EU:
Not plural, its not servers, its server.
Both the boots and the gloves dropped during that run and he took them both and when we complained that we've been grinding for a while and he was already a full two sets ahead, his response was "you shouldn't expect to get everything instantly, I need gold."
We spent a whole two months trying to grind that set because of that one elitist player and it practically killed the game for us, on top of the ridiculously time gated grind as well.
I've been playing this game for 7 years. It has unique combat system. If you want to play it, i can tell you " Mystel is most crowded server". Play there. Other servers seem empty
What region is this server
@@junigamingtv4842 shen is SEA, mystel is INT, there is also DE and France server region on gameforge.
I play in ps4. There are no choice of specific server. It only shows for asia. SE asia and NE asia. Why is that?
@@junigamingtv4842 sorry i know nothing of that. i play on the pc version. just pick what is the closest to you.
iv never seen you do a review of perfect world which is strange as it was a huge mmo
The game died for me in 2017, I have no reason to get back in it. Most of my old friends quit too.
