Doing quests to make people worship you is actually a really smart way of fixing the "why am I eternally a lowly helper being a dogooder" problem almost every MMO has. Turning it into agency is great. More MMOs should copy that trick.

Also helps explain respawning without having to actually explain it. Otherwise, the player is left thinking, "Why can I respawn? Oh right, video game."

@@bloodlustshiva1 I honestly prefer they not explain deaths/respawning personally. I can handwave it as a game mechanic, but if it's integrated into the lore it kind of kills my suspension of disbelief, a world without dying in the lore undermines a lot of the usual narrative drives like protecting people from dying, etc.

Legally, Disney would have no leg to stand on. But America is a corporatocracy. Corporations very often auto-win cases they shouldn't even be able to file simply because the people they're suing can't afford to fight it. So, unless this game is owned by another multi-billion dollar corporation... Disney would "win".

Wow, back when I played it, the personal temple was _an actual building_ you could visit and walk around in. This game has taken quite a few steps back.
I played with friends. One major issue was the weekly limit on exp gain, making sure I could never catch up to my friend who had started just a week earlier. And when we went into dungeons together, the level difference was high enough that he didn't get any rewards. We played up to the point when you gain god powers - and it turned out that you can only use those in certain missions. So much for "Become A God".

    It wasn't always like this.
At a certain point, Skyforge's progression system was actually the thing that hooked me to the game. They had a fairly basic equipment system, but one that still worked. There was also the temple, where you could gain followers, send them on missions, and build some buildings. Guilds also had progression, and all the members contributed resources to strengthen themselves and the other members.
But the best part was the Ascension Atlas. It was the most unique skill tree system I have ever seen. Yes, it was grindy. Yes, there were paywalls. But it rewarded you for actually thinking about your build. Some players could even one shot enemies that should have been way above their level...
But after the Ascension update in 2016, they switched to the current mobile like progression system. So, technically, the game was developed by the same team. It was simply developed twice. One time as a pc game. And one time as a cash grab.

You had a skilltree you could grind and unlock the classes on (or pay to skip to x classes starting point on the tree to unlock them and progress the tree from there instead), but in general it felt pretty solid, f2p players that I knew at the time got ~2-4 classes for the most part unlocked in relatively decent order.

P.S. Also the content is mix and matched and new and old dialogues are mixed up and that is why the audio levels vary severely, the voice acting is by different actors or missing at places and so on.

Fortunately for Skyforge (unfortunately for you in this video) Disney doesn't have copyright on Thanatos, or any of the Greek deities for that matter. They have specific copyrights on specificly imaged characters - Blue-flame haired Hades, Annoying Smiling Herc, Danny Devito disguised as a goat-man, and so on - but they don't have copyrights on the original source material. If they did...Greece would either never have money problems again due to royalty fees, or the entire nation would probably go to war with the House of Mouse because you can't actually copyright cultural history like that.

VAs have said time and time again that they put a lot of faith in their directors - if the director tells them that a bad take is okay, or if they are intentionally told to put less into it, they will do so. They don’t get to hear the final product and say "nah, let’s redo this take", they need to trust their directors that their audio will sound good in the final game.

The thing about the dialogue audio variance around 16:30 might actually be related to camera position. It seems to be quieter when far away and louder up close. It's possible that the game is coded to vary the dialogue audio based on proximity, which could make some sense in a player-controlled environment, but is pretty bizarre in a cutscene.

I haven't played this game in years, so when you said you'd have to pay for all but three of the classes, I was like "What? Pretty sure I unlocked almost every class available at the time just by playing...", it's such a massive shame, because the ability to freely unlock and easily swap between so many classes with varied playstyles was one of my favorite things about the game. I loved being able to quickly swap back and forth between the minigun/rocket launcher class, the archer class (which had pretty hilariously OP DPS, if I remember right) and the berserker, or any of the other many classes to keep the game from feeling too repetitive while completing the quest chains in the big open world zones. I think that, more so than any other changes I've seen in this video compared to when I last played, paywalling all but the starter classes is really going to be what ultimately kills Skyforge, because that fairly easily available variety was the heart of the game to me and basically the main thing I enjoyed. If I would have had to pay for all but the 3 starter classes back when I started playing, I probably would have abandoned it within a week. Can't imagine any new players will stick around long.
I also remember the shrine to your character wasn't just a menu to get stuff every day, there was actually a room you could go to, update the statue of you on the shrine to match your currently equipped class and outfit, and as you increased in followers, more and more NPCs would be gathered around the shrine and would praise you and stuff, it actually really reinforced this idea of your character going from just an immortal to being an actual deity in the world, with mortals coming to pray at your shrine and whatnot.

The whole "jiggle" thing when starting conversations is actually a thing you can see in like 70% of all games. Has something to do with trying to get the best performance out of your game. Basically, characters don't have their physics activated until needed or if out of view turn to a no physics mode tpose and when they come back in view they reactivate. Dark Souls is infamous for that scaring the living shit out of people cause you think the mass of dead enemies behind you suddenly reanimates and wants to kill you (apart from the parts were that actually happens ofcourse).

There are many other games were this happens sometimes though. Horizon and Assassin's Creed for example. I don't know the exact conditions. 27:38 "Skyforge feels like two games, [...] one was making an action combat game, the other a city builder time-gated mobile game [...]" That's exactly how it went. The first Skyforge was the good part you have played. The monetisation was also way less predatory, with some level of time-gating, but bound to a flat subscription, and some minor aestetics in the shop (the model felt like free-to-play, subscribe-to-fully-enjoy). Questing was linear, but solid, the temple was a real place you could visit, the overworld map was a... overworld map, where you could select open-world areas or specific dungeons from a world-sized globe.
They literally ruined the game by inserting some overarching story in the midst of the previous questline (this is also why half the dialogs are broken), clicky progression, and a shameless pay-to-win plug. The took an early but very promising game and turned it into a shameless cash-grab. Very sad.

The game has taken so, so many steps backwards during its stay. On release, the "Atlas" of abilities was somewhat reminiscent of Atlas in PoE, at least by looks alone, and classes to unlock were nodes on that atlas. But on release my PC was bad... And when I returned a few years later, Atlas became personal for each class(instead of an interconnected web) and ENTIRELY linear. Not to mention that godhood was always a letdown but at least you used to have an actual building. I'm just watching this to reaffirm my disappointment...
By the way, has there been an episode on Allods Online? It's made by Allods Team, one of two devs for this game(the other being, ugh, Obsidian, somehow), and while I have a lot of love for it... It really needs a lot of fixes to be actually good and not just "I promise it had good intentions".

So I’ve been binging these videos and I actually play this game quite regularly on psn. Lemme tell you, it has massive potential but the devs just don’t care anymore. I’m in an endgame guild and since the player base is so low we’re the only ones that can run the content with ease. Everything you said in this video, the critiques and the praises, are spot on. Hell, in my guild we have the only two players that are “elder guardians” on psn (pipeline from the players to the devs) and they’re at their wits end advocating for change amongst our behalf with nothing coming to fruition. The mechanics have been the same since release across all platforms and there’s little to no new content dropping. Most we’ve received is two new missions 6 months ago that everyone hates and everyone complains about cuz they’re that awful. Every two months we start a new “invasion” which is just a change of boards and mobs we need to fight in the endgame. The invasions have been the same 6 since release and they haven’t added a new one ever. So after a year what’s the point of even playing. We have a season pass for each new invasion costing around 20 usd, and while then rewards are a decent deal for the cost, it’s always hit or miss whether their worth it. PvP is broken and the same 10 people are always at the top of the leaderboards, not due to skill, but rather exploitation of glitches that haven’t been patched in years. Even our guild wars are so broken that an elder guardian for the EU server on psn or pc (can’t remember which) was caught on video in the fight exploiting her heart out and received no repercussions from the devs. I love/hate this game but the only reason I’m still around is because if the community and friendship from the people I play with. Keep up the good work man

One example was Abilities and progression, Progression was originally this massive web of classes connected together by nodes of stat boosts, abilities and skills, you could essentially make a hybrid class if you progressed far enough, would be very hard and take a long time, but it was possible, then they dumbed abilities and skills down to what you see now, it used to be so much more complex and interconnected with other classes.

You used to be able to get all the classes in the game by just playing regularly. There were time gating mechanics in place, but I never managed to hit the the thresholds even during my most active play time (they were honestly a lot less strict than the artifact power increase "wait three days" thing WoW pulled during Legion for the first two months). They also increased manually if you didn't hit the max in each time frame so you didn't lose out much.
As some others said, the temple was a regular place, the overworld existed, same for large questing zones. You had an overarching power level that you could increase independent of which classes you focused on and gained points to fill in a huge skill tree and unlock more stuff. There were some issues with this as some classes weren't really made for being individually weak on a "stronger" god (namely that one thing advertised as healer that could shoot laser beams) but it was still a fun experience.
Then, they updated it to be a bug riddled mobile game. With broken dialogue, jarring scene transitions, terrible voice acting, less freedom to progress how you want and pay to win. What's still good is what they were too lazy to "innovate" into a pile of crap.

Honestly this game had excellent potential back in 2015, 16, and 17, the world is so unique and the design was also very unique, but I never understood why they made progression harder and made more activities team based in order to get stronger and there would be no point if that team keeps failing the quest, not to mention not a lot of players are barely active. It's hard to start out as a newbie nowadays because it's usually tagging along or recruiting vets to help you out and the Skyforge community is great, but after you become a god you are left alone pretty much and everything becomes 10x harder and enemies scale up to or way above you its so dumb and stupid.
I just got some help on the last few stages and I got by to being a God and getting divine form. Its sad to see this game become a failure, they're essentially throwing it all away. If they ever sol this game to DE or Bioware or Fromsoft or any other gaming company that knows how to create a proper MMORPG so people can have some damn fun.

The Temple to your character actually used to be a location you could zone into and observe the improvement of your statue and the difference in it from your classes. I remember very well that it was actually a nice place to go to.
Like I'm sure others have said in the comments but I'm too lazy to go look, it used to be that you could unlock the advanced classes by progressing through a talent system like Path of Exiles, increased the grind but at least gave people a target to aim for and regular progression to keep players hooked in.
I stopped playing a long time ago but it's a shame that it turned so bad.

I played this game a lot of time ago, and you reading reviews made me go back in thoughts to that time. The game wasn't perfect then too, it had many similar problems. But what it did have, is actual visual that you had a choice. I remember a lot more open world zones, still a bit linear, but much bigger, and I remember other players there. But one of the best things was this giant tree of perks, Path of Exile style, which had multitudes of different directions to go and even though most of them provided just stats, once you reach a large place in the tree(Far away from the start, obviously), you were given a class, as you called them here Premium Class.
Getting there was hard, but you saw, that as you got resources, you actually progressed towards them. I actually got so into the game, that I paid one month premium and even got a pack, which allowed me to choose any class to get instantly. I chose the Witch, and it was truly unique and made me fall in love with witch-class idea as it was presented there. Your charge was you jumping on your staff-broom and riding with it was the coolest visually thing that I remember, for some reason.
In a similar to this huge POE-like system of overall leveling, also each class had their own tree with branches which intertwined. What you saw with Cryomancer with you just going from Ability 1 to Ability 2 to Ability 3 had an actual choice, you could choose a more direct path to an Ability that you maybe wanted and so on.
I recently tried to try the game again, and wanted to get my account back. But it as if didn't know my accound, and I even found the credentials for purchases I made in the game, on my email but the Support didn't even answer my request to get the account back. Real sad.

This game was so amazing before they released the 1.0 version. You could build out your character how you felt, with all the skills and traits you could swap around. All classes were unlockable eventually if you were patient. Every part of the gameplay and environments was great looking. The temple where you could interact with your followers was engaging and a genuinely fun mechanic.
It feels like they went in to develop a monthly sub game, then in the beta decided people wouldn't pay for it (I absolutely would have, it was so fucking fun) and added a layer of mobile game trash to...make it less fun I guess? Because it was really really fun and I was telling everyone to get in on the ground floor. Then it released and my character builds were gone and my gamepad no longer worked at all. This game had some incredible gamepad support before they made it lesser.

I played Skyforge a few years ago on PS4 and I loved it at the beginning, for all the good reasons you covered here. I bought the Outlaw class and loved the game even more. At the time I wanted a game with lots of grinding to do and systems to invest in and I thought Skyforge was going to be that game for me. The love affair lasted until I completed the main story and got the first god powers, then it was like hitting a brick wall. I couldn't progress at all, enemies became so hard all I did was die. My fun died as well.
I looked for advice online, thinking I had messed something up. The general concensus was: have veteran players carry you. That killed Skyforge for me, I don't want a game I need other people to play for me. I uninstalled immediately and to this day Skyforge is one of my greatest disappointments in gaming.

It took me several months to get near to the end game, having to struggle the game with revenant class because other classes had no heal tankiness to withstand too overleveled mobs and bosses. I'm not talking about +5 might mobs and bosses here, no no... I struggled with 60+ might against 120 or more. It gave enough to actually stay on tip toes to do anything impactful.

Of course this alone doesn't redeem any of the game's flaws, I just think it's interesting trivia.
Also, I'm not sure who's developing the game now, but I was introduced to the beta via its association with Allods Online; the same Russian development team. So -technically- not an Eastern MMO. I can't speak for whomever is developing it now, if it's not Allods Team.

I'm like 99% sure the issues your having with the option screen at the start are scaling issues from having a 4k monitor/desktop resolution. It was the same issue with your last video (Worst MMO Ever? - Metin 2) and the tiny UI.
If your going to play old MMOs on a 4K monitor that never would of tested scaling/4k properly, when you start having issues you need to change your desktop resolution to 1080p (or maybe try 1440p) before you start the game. Otherwise I feel like this is going to be an issue a lot.
Can this be upvoted for visibility because I know at least on the last video this was the issue and no one else seems to be mentioning this.

You can also manually super-sample Anti-Aliasing and apply FXAA postprocessing effects. It having no effect in the game is fair criticism, but it's not necessary to suffer through the game without.
You can also sometimes work around a lot of the scaling issues with 4k with "Borderless Gaming" ,free programm and I suggest it for every PC gamer with more than 1 monitor.
And for future reference, more than 60hz monitors can really fuck up old games that have animations or physics tied to FPS. And because some devs work with outdated rigs or just do console ports for PC, these problems even happen in newer games. Yay, undervalued PC gaming, that points out issues consoles don`t know they have ,makes some new ones, but for every one there is a solution

Was watching other videos of this series and wondered if you would cover this one, and then it showed up as a suggested video. Played back in 2015 and boy howdy was is a damn blast to play. You didn't even showcase the skill tree with nodes so... I assume that's gone for whatever reason. Comments seem to confirm that. Back in the day you could grind out up to a cap on the skill tree where you'll gain power with each node and eventually unlock classes. You could buy those classes with real money sure, but you could still unlock them F2P if you wanted to. I was around for them adding new features and new raids into the game and it was just so enjoyable. No other combat system in an MMO has pulled me in like Skyforge did. Later me and my guild felt the oncoming wave of microtransactions slowly building up and that made a good chunk of us leave the game I'm pretty sure. I don't mind playing for literally most of the day in order to win challenges against other players on 'who can clear this dungeon the most times in X amount of time' as that's at least a battle against other players, but not even allowing you to work towards the other classes anymore? So lame...

TBF i dont know in which year the changes occurred but the gameplay and class aquisition used to be way different when the game launched originally.
Back then you had a world map over which you teleported into instanced content farming for ressources which led you level up your gear, skills and let you attain new classes in your talent tree. (Also by use of the farmed ressources at the time)
You had pretty much everything from exploration missions to escort missions to escape missions to bossfights and some other things if i remember correctly.
As of now i havent touched the game in multiple years.
Kinda miss the old version but maybe thats just me.
EDIT: i forgot to mention that the world map was different and the missions were randomly generated so it didnt get repetetive for the most part

@@Vaerlayn As someone who has been playing since the foundry: the removal of the foundry stings and I'll miss the dumb ogre farming maps on flat terrain, but I can't honestly say I miss spending ages leveling and still needing to farm IL at the end of the game. The removal of places like Blacklake, Tower District and Rothé Valley, along with lowering the level to 20 and making maxing it a two-day "casual" playthrough, really helped push the player towards what mattered: the endgame. Cryptic was one of the few developers that actually cut the boring pre-endgame leveling - in a F2P MMO, I'll add - so that people can go to the meaty mechanic-heavy group content much, much faster instead of just spending days on end waiting to be able to start playing the actual game. It's just not enjoyable to spend hours trying to unlock a new power and fighting the same enemies with essentially no challenge just to reach that part of the game where it actually gets fun and messing up is a thing.
Actually, "no challenge" is a bit misleading to say, given the previous state of leveling: it was actually needlessly threatening enemies that dealt massive damage when surrounding the player and needed constant dancing to be taken out. It's actually still here, of course, but now instead of spending days on end suffering through it, people go through it in about two afternoons while getting some companions, mounts and insignias to help boost their stats. It was a drag then and it's something I only started minding now after I was going through the 7th character in a row over days of playing the same game in the same leveling process, which I'd file under "heavy repetition makes anything boring eventually".
It's a shame content had to be cut, but it was the complete opposite of removing the best and emphasizing the worst.

@@maxwellsterling The thing is, Neverwinter never really had a good endgame. I loved it's gameplay, but the campaigns were just timegated repetition, and the dungeons were either mindlessly easy, or stuff you'd get kicked from for playing the wrong paragon path, so I can hardly say that any of that was the game's strength - at least in my opinion with my experience.
However, the removal of so much of the story results in an extremely yada-yada'd story, where it ends up painfully underwhelming and you hardly feel like you earned anything story wise. With all the build up that the original story had, everything went towards a very satisfying climax as you've earned a reputation and defeated Valindra - which I've heard has also been made a solo encounter that just... happens with little context (or so I hear, I won't touch the game anymore myself, but friends who do still play pass things along). It just sounds like they've dumped any pretext of a story to just be a boringly generic MMO set in a setting too good for it honestly.

Used to play this game A LOT as a Cryomancer. About the action-combat part, it leans more onto where a majority of attacks will always guarantee a hit, but you're able to dodge those massive wind-ups. It makes you think you're moving around a lot, but you aren't.

mmm you sure about that m8?? I'm a founder for this game, and last I checked the steam merge came much later. we started in like 2014/15 in cbt 1..2..3..4. steam for this didn't come around until 2017. I smell bullshit.

@@Lemminjoose No I don't, you said you played when it first launched, and I'm calling BS on that. There were only a handful of us in CBT1 and we would know each other. Furthermore, it wasn't on steam at launch. That said, either your comment was poorly worded, or you're full of shit. So, take your pick.

I liked skyforge, the reason why we stopped playing with friends is that the game constantly didn’t allow us to play together.
    1. Mission you have to do alone.
    2. Mission only for level 4.
    3. Mission that had to have certain class besides mine.
Or other similar bullshit. Like 70% of the time we just didn’t play together. Bow compare this to Guild Wars 2, where the game actively adjust so thst you can do literally anything together.

Skyforge was still a proper MMO when I played it ages ago, so the mobile stuff is 100% added on later.

Last time I tried playing theres a super weird scaling tier system after you finish the whole map, so maybe like 20 or so hours in. I guess it's their idea of end game but like there's new tiers or something every patch so with it a new tier of gear and monsters go up a tier. Well after you finish the map you get thrown right into the current tier, when i tried it was like 22 or something. All the gear from before counted as tier 1, but all the enemys now were tier 22. You couldn't even kill a single mob to try and get a drop. Everyone said you either use your daily god mode to run a dungeon and hope for loot or get someone else who already has current loot carry you to get current loot enough until you can carry yourself in the same content.
I'm not sure if it's still like this but I didn't even bother trying because I wanted to play not get carried through raids for a week just to be able to start playing.
