Music makes us happy. Millions of people can agree on that. But heavy metal? A genre that is often described as deafening and aggressive, how is can that make people happy? Are the headbanging, beer-drinking and blackclad metal fans even happier than other people? Surely, that can't be.But psychologist Nico Rose argues the contrary. In his book "Hard, Heavy and Happy" he describes the effects of heavy metal on body, mind and soul. He also explains how what heavy metal opponents often call "noise" helps cope with anxiety and depression. On this episode of Arts Unveiled, we will explain how the notorious festival venue of Wacken became a sanctuary for metalheads' well-being and how the heavy metal crowd has now even managed to win over the quiet-loving inhabitants of the tranquil village in northern Germany. Heavy Metal becomes Happy Metal. - With hard rock music to a happier life.
00:00 Intro: Why metalheads are happier people
00:22 Reason 1: Metal fans have a strong sense of community
03:39 Reason 2: Metal provides an outlet for stress and anger
06:24 Reason 3: Metal leads to feelings of joy and empowerment
08:19 Outro: The power of heavy metal

Thank you 🤗
Thanks for this reaction.
While I do have daily struggles I don't have any issues of aggression, etc. I've never used violence to solve my problems. A song like Bloodywood Dana Dan is on the border or possible even over it, where I draw the line. I would recommend to react to these guys.
13:34 music is very much my drug of choice.
13:37 open minded is one of the best tools in our bag of tricks to get a universal understanding of things, to understand the diversity of something. Like understanding the diversity of metal sub-genres and how you can enjoy them. And understanding an other persons view of the world, so we can rid ourselves of misunderstanding thus prevent anger and violence.
15:22 also in the moshpit: when someone falls down, pick them up !
21:23 freedom from being judged is one thing metalheads don't need to worry about, which is a gift, far to many people are obsessed with what other people think or want to "keep up with the Joneses". Nobody needs that extra stress and pressure, their are enough things to worry about.
Something which wasn't mentioned in the video you reacted to: their are 2 kinds of music: music you put on when you are in a certain mood which fit your mood, but their is also a different kind of music: music which changed your mood. Most metal music probably goes in the second category.
Sadly I've also had a very sad & dark thought: what if this anger release valve is actually not good for society, because their are certain things which really need to be fixed and we should be angry about. Maybe a second step is needed, a positive release channel to channel it into.
PS Wacken is on my bucket list for sure.
Thanks for the response. I think we are thinking along the same lines for the most part. I think the goal is to put positive and accepting energy out into the world. My goal is to feel as happy as I can, I am not always successful but that is the goal. Sometimes the world can get to anyone but music can be used to help bear the load. Cheers!
My first Metal gig was Sabbath in 1976, when the only genre was Heavy Metal. I also went to my first Punk gig the same year - The Clash. And my first Rock concert, in Cardiff Castle, with the likes of Hawkwind, Budgie and Status Quo. I was only 15 then but what I recall about all three genres - Metal, Rock and Punk - was that it was all energetic and angry but fun too with a great new feeling of sharing a love of the music with a lot of people - and, above all, it was a great release of all that youthful energy! Slipknot were the last original Metal act I remember seeing, at the end of the last century, but I'd moved more into EDM, Techno and Trance through the 90's and into the new millenium, though I always still loved the heavier end of that genre, with live acts like Underworld, The Prodigy and Leftfield being as heavy as any Metal band I'd seen. Then, in 2015, I discovered Babymetal and their truly original genre, Kawaii Metal. Following them eventually introduced me to bands like Nemophila, Lovebites, Aldious, Ningen Isu, Asterism and others. Then, in 2017, I found the biggest jewel in the treasure chest of Japanese Rock and Metal, the always excellent Band-Maid, THE best Rock band I've ever seen (sorry, Zeppelin, but 1979 was a long time ago). They have brought me the greatest music-based happiness of all and not least because of the incredible communities of fans that exist around the world. That's where the happiness is - enjoying excellent music alongside a lot of people who share ones love of a band. Metal, Rock, any genre you can name, they all have these communities, this shared love, and experiencing the music together is a unique experience. It's not the genre but the music and the shared love of it that creates the happiness and, hopefully, all audiences get to feel that.
Looks like you were in the generation just before mine. AC/DC, Def Leppard were my first loves in metal. I was brought up in a very strictly country music household. It wasn't until my folks split up that I was able to openly listen to these types of bands. Joan Jett for instance was a huge first influence. The music helped me more than anything. Being a poor kid from the south moving to California over night due to my family disintegrating left me very alone in the world. I turned to Angus Young to get me through. I think like you that's why I love Band Maid so much, they have a different sound but a lot of the same energy. Long story a little shorter, I have used music as a tool to keep me centered and more in control of my happiness.
@@jimmysrandomAlways nice to hear how music helps heal and strengthen the mind and body and help bring happiness.

Thanks for sharing this video from Toks
I grew up on rock and disco, but I thought that country music was boring until the day I first listened to Johnny Cash, wow, that was an eye openner, now I can say that I'm listening to all kind of music and able to appreciate it, and yes I'm happier and more relax after a good trash or heavy metal song. Peace
I can find peace in many different genres of music, just depends on how I'm feeling. Cheers!

I think that people at metal shows are freer from judgment from each other. I have not been to too many pop concerts myself.

Totally agree, don't have a narrow choice of music. Your playlist sounds like mine, you might hear Rammstein followed by Mozart then Paul McCartney, then Josh Turner.......
Have a wonderful day

I want my acre and a mule 🧟
most of my spotify playlist (60-65%) is metal with some hard rock songs, the rest is pop, (mostly) old school rap and techno, but i hate german folks music aka. "Schlager"; i like listening to trash metal, industrial, (melodic) death and normal death metal +power metal with some other genres here and there (like little bit (melodic) black metal and some normal old black metal songs; i dont like the extreme genres of metal so much)
current fav metal bands are "Cypecore", "Demon Hunter", "Parasite Inc", "Orbit Culture" and "Rammstein"
