  • The way we get our food in the United States is completely messed up. When you go to the grocery store, especially in a city, most of the fresh fruits and vegetables you see have been trucked in from somewhere else, losing crucial nutritional value at an environmental cost. This is a huge problem, but Elon Musk’s brother has a solution...in the form of a shipping container.

      Hey I just noticed that Kimbal Musk has all the advanatges over his older brother Elon Musk. Like he was born in September so he is more smarter than his brother, his birthday number is 20 while Elon's birthday number is 28, he's born in the year of a Rat which is the first chinese zodiac, while Elon is born in the year of the Pig which is the last chinese zodiac, his name starts with K which tends to make him more smarter than Elon whose name starts with E, the day of the week he was born in was Wednesday which makes him even more smarter and his communication skills tend to be better than Elon whose born on Monday, and his star sign is a Virgo which tends to be a better star sign that Elon's star sign Cancer. This makes me understand that Maye Musk wants to make everything equal for both of her sons by giving all those advantages to her younger son Kimbal and all the disadvantages to Elon because Elon is the oldest child so he gets all the disadvanatges.

Recently I began growing vegetables and have much to learn, but this is the future for much of agriculture. In southern states where sunshine is plentiful and solar power and energy storage is cost effective, these farms will become profitable. In the summer you will overproduce electricity from solar panels, you store some in powerwalls or use energy direct from the solarpanels. If you batteries are full and you still getting more power from solar panels, you send the extra energy to the grid and get paid. In Sweden if you sell 20kW and then buy 20 kW you are still winning in economic way.

    I love that they can take a large area of land and grow the same amount of produce in a fairly small volume of space. Expanding on this idea, these 40 foot containers are designed to be stacked quite high as well, taking further advantage of vertical space. This solves a massive problem that comes with a growing population and depending on how plants react to growing conditions in low/zero G this could even be taken to space. If I wasn't renting I'd have something like this in my back yard, providing there were enough solar panels to negate the electrical consumption.

Stack up the containers close to each other to create a thermal reservoir. Lets hope Kimbal reads this lol.

    Instead of shipping containers with uninsulated thin walls- they could grow underground.. they need the insulation that the Earth provides. My Mom used to work in a mineral plant and they used the limestone caves for some storage because it stays 55 degrees Fahrenheit in them all year in Illinois. They could also use a combination of geothermal, solar and wind for energy and get power for off grid.

    This is exactly what I want to see technology used for and where I love to see innovation happen. I think an important issue will be getting the energy costs down, but this has a bright outlook in my mind. If I think of where I'm from, many farmers are giving up on farming because of the high risk of farming, especially with the drought we experience. On a separate note, it is interesting as a South African to hear a mixed SA Texan accent. If you go to 2:44, I hear an SA accent on the word "outdoor" and an american accent on "farm".

    What a great idea. Think about the following to solve the energy problem: 1. Put the container close to heating equipment. Reuse the backcoming heat from water heating to get the right temperature within your containers. 2. Use recuperators to get energy. 3. Use tiny water wheels to collect energy from the flow of the water nearby the sinks. And: Do not stop doing experiments. Did you already include a fish farm nearby for a closed circle?

      Keep in mind more goes into how we get food now than shipping. In terms of energy there's packaging and farming equipment. If you want to go even lower, think about the resources needed to make the farming equipment (of course, this method requires resources as well). Not to mention opportunity cost (giving up the next best option) of the land. What could we do with the extra space if we replaced some farms with this method? How much money could be saved from government subsidies which protect farmers financially if they lose crops? Now they can precisely control the conditions so environmental factors would have less of an impact. Not to mention that (I assume) farmers don't really use the land outside of the growing season, inherently making it more expensive to operate since they still need to pay taxes on land they aren't using.

    That is a great vision! Trucks wouldn't drive so far if they were growing the food enroute. The quality would be much higher too! This may circumvent the whole grocery system entirely. You could have fresh produce delivered to your door! This could be the Amazon of produce! You could even grow small fruit trees in there!
    One possible solution (although isn't renewable energy) is to hook up the shipping container outlet to the battery of the truck that is transporting it (while the engine is on, of course). If you have a few more storage batteries onboard the crate to feed off the truck's engine, then you might have enough energy to grow food year round! You could also retrofit the truck's heating system to also heat the greenhouse!
    Sometimes the next environmental step forwards involves being such a small step that you overlap your previous steps. Non-renewable energy, used efficiently, can often meet our needs better than solely renewable or inefficient use of non-renewables, respectively.

    Vertical Indoor Hydroponic Farming has been around for a long time. At least now there is a (relatively) famous spokesperson supporting the movement. Ironic how Elon Musk's brother says sustainable electricity is the issue haha. All communities will eventually grow 90%+ of their food locally, and each community will be self-supporting. Matthew Davis She never even mentioned how much nutrients they lose. If the nutritional loss was signifigant then Im sure theyd brag about how local food has 50% or 80% more nutrients then importes but they dont. This leads me to believe the nutrient loss is not signifigant.

    • @MajorChachi
      @MajorChachi 6 лет назад +2

      Anderson88G22 sure. I guess it's depends on how you define significant. Even a 20% nutrient increase is meaningful, especially for people in poverty, who are in food swamps/deserts. I'm also concerned about nutrients lost because they aren't using soil. I'd love to see more research on those indoor farms. That style removes many pollutant issues, primarily fertilizer runoff.

    This is how they also started farming in the very dry parts of the middle east, because of the efficient water usage.
    If we want the world to be able to live the living standard that we have in the US, then we are going to have to utilize this system. We can't possibly have +1billion more people as rich as the average American (I'm talking about all of China, India, Brazil and African countries, just the all of the world you get it) with the way we currently produce our food. I think Vox made a video about how we then would need 7 and half earths to support humankind.

    nuclear power - NUCLEAR POWER IS THE ANSWER!!! ONE of those shipping containers could be a molten salt reactor running predominantly on thorium or the waste from other reactors, reducing the waste to a HUNDREDTH of its prior volume (liters of waste material go in, mililiters come out) and a THOUSANDTH of its prior quarantine period (300 years instead of 300,000 years). If you keep the exterior surfaces of the reactor container jacketed in water, it'll absorb ALL of the hard ionizing radiation and turn it into dissociated hydrogen, dissociated oxygen, and heat. You can store the hydrogen for use as an internal combustion fuel (It's explosive? No shit, that's why it's a candidate for internal combustion) and release the oxygen into the atmosphere, then use the waste heat to warm the farm pods. This could be all its own self sustaining little structure.

      Can we though? Notice that the energy usage is unspecified. Poor countries have very little energy as it is so that already makes it useless to them. Not only that but shipping containers run about $2500 per pop. Then there's transporting these big ass containers into rural areas via dirt roads? I don't see many semi trucks in West Africa, feel me? Then there's also the chemical fertilizer and nutrients that aren't infinite. Just like every selfish company, this product too will require you to constantly reorder these nutrients to even have the thing work. Then to top it off, they've made it as complicated as they can. There's tubes, water pumps, wiring, lighting, dehumidifiers, all of which can and will break down rendering the system inefficient or unusable until repairs are made and parts replaced. AND THEN if they want their plants to not suffocate in there own oxygen, an air circulation system will have to be added as well, or I suppose you could just have people sleep I'm the containers... Adding the necessary air circulation system will then undermine the temperature control system by requiring air from the outside to enter the system... Hmmm...
