This video 👌👌👌 I couldn’t agree more and it baffles me that people don’t understand the difference. I’d even add to what you said with a few points. Firstly you do not get any thrill for buying the cards, people like sealed because they want the thrill of pulling it yourself, they want the gamble that comes with it. Secondly I work in the motor industry, all classic cars are terrible to drive nowadays, people don’t buy them because they perform better, they buy them for the nostalgia! And the same applies to cards! Sometimes it may be a poor set but if that was your first set in the hobby it means more regardless of the individual cards value. Love the content man keep up the good work 👍
Brother if Alex has an extra $100 on the side it's going towards a booster box not a mic, THATS WHY HES AN AWESOME INVESTOR **Rolls eyes while loudly chewing bagle in my boxers**
Great video…again. I want to point out an important thing. The box breaks contribute to the success of the hobby in a large way. People will always participate in buying a few packs on live streams in hopes of putting less money upfront for a chance to obtain a major chase card worth MORE than what they are willing to risk. This also affects supply and demand from a sealed product perspective. People will continue to buy sealed for breaks and the cycle will continue. It’s a win win for almost everyone
Deals are still out there. Stopped in at one of my lgs’s and was surprised to see two Battle Styles bb’s on the shelf. They were $90 when they sold out months ago so I asked how much they were….shocked when they said $90. Owner found three somewhere and put one in their gravity box and other two on shelf. Yes I bought the other two….
Bang on 💯👍. Definitely, a good refresher to watch. I am still relative new to Pokémon investing, have you seen a reprint of any set(s) or other TCGs after the 2-3 year released period?
I don't remember which one, but there was one that got reprinted in a 3,5 year window. Roaring Skies? Don't remember, but there is some sets. But I wouldnt worry to much about it if you're holding, what people will rip in the future is much more important. Like CZ. Printed to the ground, but will be ripped alot as well many years in the future
@jellypete2338 I'm 32 and I've never seen any Pokemon anything more than I've seen giant boxes of CZ at Walmart. When I think about Pokemon I imagine the CZ ETB. I actually think everyone saw so much CZ for so long it'll definitely have a nostalgia element in several years.
Saw a pic from pokehive’s story of Paldea cases they got. They all said not for sale until June 9th 2023. So it’s def a restock from the look of things
I can say that you are correct about how opening any booster boxes or literally any Pokemon card-related thing only results in you only losing your money. If you're in it simply for reselling then most of your stuff should be sealed and put away. Almost none of those cards will ever be worth the price of that booster box or any Pokemon card-related item as you had said yourself. It doesn't matter if the box came out today or tomorrow under no circumstances is opening it up worth it and the chances of getting that card and the chances of it coming back as a 10 are slim to zero.
I just starting to collect sealed, but I'm a singles guy all the way. I have over 6k worth if singles from all eras. That charmander ir from 151 is popping off. Maybe I just have the right ones, but my collection keeps going up in value, I have them all in the tcgplayer app to keep track. That moonbreon is doing amazing too even still. Great videos, man!
That isn't the case for every card 4:25. When we were kids me and my sister would open up a ton of Legendary Treasures Pack and you wouldn't believe how many times we pulled that full art Mew card and it sells for 60 dollars... It's one of the most common EX cards and it sells for a dumb price. At most, it should be 40 dollars.
Great open and honest discussion with objective reasoning and I appreciate someone who can clearly explain their thoughts and welcomes criticism. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
This is exactly how I view Pokemon vs Stocks. A stock can always be sold after it was purchased. Sure some people hold forever but the supply can always be sold. With Pokemon, once a box is opened it’s gone forever.
Good video, but there's so many times you would argue with the vintage collectors who would talk about pop reports in modern and you would say population reports dont matter, people dont look at them or care, but your whole (correct) argument at the 4:10 mark and on is that exact argument that population reports do matter. Its the entire supply side of the equation. You talk about fighting the supply side curve, which is correct, I am just confused as to why you used to always say that was a non factor when arguing with vintage collectors.
Alex I know you don't really do Japanese/other languages but have you seen the new drop for the 5th Anniversary Traditional Chinese Premium Box? The Pikachu promo in there looks pretty nice. You think it could be a play?
I think the true skill in investing in singles is too find the undervalued cards, such as the latios latias from team up back then or even cards like the pikachu secret rare from cosmic eclipse that was easy to pull back then, but very popular and cheap
Couldn't agree more. There's very few I've invested in, but I've made out huge each time. That pikachu promo from sword and shield box that's like 50 bucks now, I was buying in bulk for a buck a piece. Sold em once they hit 25, but made big. Next one I'm going for is mewtwo 052 from UPC
Imo, sealed products investment has in its favour that your market are both sealed colector and cards collectors. Yeah, probably It Will not sell in the highest price as a card, but you still can make lots of profit with a quicker sell
Card prices are based on what's in fashion & sealed is based on how many are left, two are different markets that is how i explain it to people anyways
Appreciate the reply, and yeah I was thinking this because back then I had a gengar/machamp level x deck from the platinum series and remembered how nice it was to play in game. Not sure if it’s because of playability the value of those singles are crazy high but I guess it’s pretty obvious that it’s due to scarcity over time that brings value to some singles
The Obsidian Flames Pidgeot UR is $10-12 which is a lot more than most UR's because it's super playable. It doesn't seem to have much of an effect on the SIR though (or maybe the SIR would be $3 otherwise and I'm the only person that likes it)
I like the cards but I love the sealed box. I much prefer having that to most chase cards. I would rather have a base set box then a base set Charizard. common sense says long term the sealed product is worth more than the top chase single in the set the thing is most people don't stick around in the hobby past 5 years before we get a new batch of collectors so with that being said just look at evolving skies moon kitty is worth more than the booster box however not by much especially if you got in at retail prices on evo skies booster boxes means your $300 investment into only 2 boxes is worth more than a moon kitty) eventually over time just 1 booster box will be worth more than double a moon kitty mark my words...but yea moon kitty will forever be a grail that everyone wants its one of those singles everyone wants it'll sadly only go up in price every year with slight market corrections...now with that said short term the singles are superior pickups vs sealed; long term 2+yrs the sealed starts climbing and will eventually surpass singles
