Can’t watch this video right now but I will later tonight. I really appreciate the amount of work you put in with these though, Omar!! :) Algorithm gang!
i’m kind of new to comics. i’ve read the first TWD compendium, but that’s it. your videos have really helped me with understanding how to read marvel comics, since there’s so many.
Thanks for this Omar. I know I’m watching it months after you posted it, but this and the Crushing Krises reading orders have been super helpful for me. My Thor collection is such a weird mess of whatever I can find for cover price or less. I have a hardcover MMW vol 1, a softcover Barnes and Novel MMW vol 2, Epic vol 2, and then JMS through Cates in various trades, hardcovers, and complete collections with plenty of gaps to fill in still. Looking forward to upgrading with the new omni coming out, especially since a lot of the epics now go for more than omnis.
I recently read Thor Kingdom Lost Epic and the writers played fast and loose with innocent bystanders getting killed that's for sure. I read those issues when I was a kid but never noticed people dying until now. Ah to be young and oblivious again. Great job on the reading order although I would point out some those early Lee/Kirby stories are quite verbose when reading them. You really did get your 10cents worth of entertainment back in those days.
One of the characters that I have nearly the full run for. Lots of people focus on just Stan & Jack, Simonson and then JMS and onward for Thor, but there are a bunch of good runs. We so badly need Thunderstrike fully collected. Then just a few more gaps to fill.
A brilliant and really useful run through of Thor’s reading list Omar, thank you! You’re right about Tom DeFalco’s run - it’s brilliant and IMO right up there with Walt’s run. Any chance you can petition marvel for two DeFlaco Omani’s?!?
Your timing was perfect. I was just looking at your videos on Thor, when you released this. I love these videos. I hope you will also make complete Spider-man reading order in future. Man I hope that Marvel will reprint those omniboo, but before that I hope they will release AS by Defalco omni :)
Awesome video! Also a video idea: your personal choice on the best runs for characters. Saw how you got excited with the Walter Simonson run. If you did this with some it would give new comers an idea of what stories to pick up 👍
THOR is awesome! His classic stuff is some of the early stuff that I don't mind at all. (Classic SpiderMan gets repetitve). I hope David solicits some feedback from you for the Aaron omnibus...
Hey Omar. Great video but now I'm regretting not buying the later Thor Epics as I've just focused on the era I was buying & reading. I guess I shall have to seek them out. Cheers mate.
Definitely keen to get the Walter Simonson Thor Omni!! You said the second printing was thinner, what's the difference in what's collected between the first and second printing and does it majorly affect the story? Also hope to read the Onslaught omnibus!!
Since Adam Warlock is my favorite comic book character, I really enjoyed the Blood and Thunder crossover. Part 12 in Warlock and the Infinity Watch #25 was my favorite issue. I like the fact that you pointed out Tom Grindberg's artwork. In this crossover, he drew issues 23 and 24 of Warlock and the Infinity Watch. The Silver Surfer issues were actually pencilled by Andy Smith. With Angel Medina and Tom Raney also drawing some issues, this crossover had some cool artwork.
@Francisco Pinto The stories in those Marvel Masterworks are really great! Among other things, the foundation of the Infinity Saga is in there. If you can get the two trade paperbacks of Infinity Watch, you will have all the issues of Warlock and the Infinity Watch minus the issues in the Blood and Thunder trade paperback.
Omar I’ve just found out they are rereleasing the Simonson Omnibus next year. It says “new printing.” Do you know if this means a different coloring than the last one?
Help me out here...epic Thor vol 11 is part of that 'old era' of the series when the books were thicker and the paper not glossy and white as it is now, right?
Ahhh... the Simonson run - *THAT* is where Thor really started and ended with me. I like the current Cates run, but nothing compares to the Simonson run in my opinion. So awesome. The definitive Thor of our time.
@@NearMintCondition I must confess, I lost interest after Simonson left the book and didn't pick it up again until Aaron started writing it. I liked the Gorr storyline Aaron did, but little else of his run. Based on your feedback however, I think I may have to check out DeFalco, Jurgens, and JMS stories to see if those resonate with me. Thanks!
Love your channel. But question. Why no love for hardcover marvel masterworks? Thor has tons of hardcover masterworks and another volume is solicited for next year?
Update on the JLA Omni if you haven’t caught wind of it from elsewhere: I just examined the table of contents from an overview video of it posted by an advanced copy recipient and it *does* in fact appear to contain all of the missing non-Waid and Millar issues I mentioned as well as all of the key DC One Million issues.

Thor is a tough character for me to get into. I have read the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby omnibus vol. 3 which I did enjoy. The art in that book if off the hook. Some of my favorite old time comic art. It makes for an easy read. I’ve read most of the Simonson run, and it’s ok. But I just don’t love it. It’s only ok. I’ve also read the first of the two Dan Jurgens omnibuses. And again, it’s only ok. It does have moments of awesomeness, but it also has moments that I just don’t enjoy. For instance the whole secret identity part of the story. It’s just so lame. So unnecessary. And it consumes so much of the book. I hear (I don’t know where from) that the second omni is much better, so there’s hope. On top of that I’ve read the first trade of the Jason Aaron run and that is where I found I really liked Character/story. Thor has so much potential for a really rich history and it is never explored enough. That’s where I enjoy his stories, where his past is explored and tied into his present. I want to see more of that. Anyway, I’m going to finish Jurgens run, reread JMS’s run, and hopefully we’ll get a printing of the Jason Aaron run. So there is potential for me to really get into Thor. We have the Loki series coming up which I’m really excited for. So I’m trying to catch up to the Loki/Journey into Mystery omnibus by Kieron Gillen so I have some context for the TV show. I don’t even know if they’re connected, but it’s always better to have more character context when watching these shows or movies. Let’s hope I get there in time.
I had the hardest time getting into the Lee Kirby era of Thor, but I finally read them a few years back for the second time and they grew on me. The one era that I really enjoyed was the Defalco era.
