    Tragic man. US Military went from almost nothing to 8.5 million people. Many people simply were not competent to do the job they were assigned. That was inevitable, creating such a huge army so quickly. Sobel was one such case. He understood physical fitness, he tried to provide leader ship but he didn’t know how to do it, and he did it badly. On top of that, he was incompetent at the tactical skills of small unit leader ship, which thankfully was found out before he was sent into battle where he would’ve gotten himself and a lot of other people killed. One of the many cruel things about any war is it drags people’s’ real character out into the bright light of day, where they can’t hide. It showed Sobel for what he was. How many of us could stand that exposure? We all like to think that we would be Dick Winters, but most of us will never know.

    • @rikk319
      @rikk319 2 года назад +35

      I know I wouldn't be Dick Winters...but I'm pretty sure I'm not Captain Sobel, either. My grandfathers were WW2 vets, and they weren't as great as Winters or as bad as Sobel, either. I'd be happy if I could have just matched half of what they did in combat in the Pacific.

    • @Immigrantlovesamerica
      @Immigrantlovesamerica 2 года назад +100

      Sobel is underappreciated. They should have depicted him a little better. They painted him as a villain without getting the same mercy and understanding that others got. He was a leader-in-training. Despite his shortfalls he demanded excellence, beating discipline, fitness, and health into a unit that went on to be one of the most significant in the war. That's not nothing. Many of the members of Easy Company went on to give him credit despite not liking the guy. Removing him was a good call as he would have gotten people killed, and that's okay. We all dont need to be tactical geniuses. He was good at training and logistics, and that's where he was placed.

    From what I've read the real Herbert Sobel was a well-intentioned man who was a good trainer. Despite not being much of an athlete he always ran Currahee with his company. The real Dick Winters stated that Sobel's tough training had a lot to do with turning Easy into what it became, and Don Malarkey later wrote that he felt Sobel's training was a big part of why he survived.

    • @CodaMission
      @CodaMission 2 года назад +24

    • @ziweiyuan
      @ziweiyuan 2 года назад +17

      @@CodaMission I think it's clear that he was all of those things. Petty, vindictive, and a poor tactician, but also a dedicated trainer who wanted his men to be the best. He knew that war was going to throw tougher situations at his men than he could ever cook up, so he wanted them to be as mentally tough as possible...and he wanted to catch the washouts early and get them out of his company.
      Also, I didn't say the entire 506th thought well of Sobel...I cited specific examples of men who had at least somewhat kind words for him.

      It’s easy to miss because Sobel proved to be such an ineffective combat leader that he was a brilliant instructor. Easy company would have probably been wiped out if it wasn’t for his training.

If someone has watched Friends enough Schwimmer's character Ross has a very whiny and melodramatic personality. Associating an actor with his most popular role is a pretty common thing. So, he just doesn't strike people as an authority figure. Doesn't make someone an idiot.

      FMJ was the 2nd to use Ermey as a DI, Boys in Company C was the first, and he seriously toned it down for the movie. Jack Webb was not a DI but was former Army and when we watched it in 1980 on ship, we saw how close it was to our own training of 77, emotion wise, but no one had made FMJ yet, that had Marine sdying from paughter in the movie theaters from nostalgia while other patrons thought we were sick, then 20 minutes into it, people turned their heads to ask if this was really like it, "YEP, IT SURE WAS! THEY FINALLY DID IT RIGHT!"

    Read this from the book version ⬇️
    "As training continued throughout 1942, Sobel never tired of pushing the men to the brink of exhaustion, running them over the obstacle course and taking them on nine-mile runs with full packs, rifles and machine guns. Sobel’s favorite exercise was the Friday-night thirty-five-mile nonstop hike with full gear. He would order canteens to be filled with water at the start of the hike, and expected them to still be full when they got back. Harsh punishment awaited any man who sneaked a sip.
    “We were miserable, exhausted, and thought that if we did not get a drink of water we were certain to collapse,” Pvt. Burton “Pat” Christenson recalled. At the end of a march Sobel would check each man’s canteen to see that it was still full.
    Winters grew disgusted with Sobel’s increasingly harsh treatment of the men. Walking the ranks during inspection, Sobel would bark out, “dirty stacking swivel,” “dirty gun sight” or “dirty ears,” and dock the men leave time. Sometimes the punishments were just, sometimes they were not and other times they were sheer fantasy. It didn’t matter to Sobel, but it did to Winters, who was often ordered to come up with a list of infractions, real or imagined.Sobel’s habit of canceling leaves as punishment was not a hardship for the socially reserved Winters. While many of the men crossed the street to the Wagon Wheel or walked a short distance down the highway to the Hi-Dee-Ho to tip a few beers, Winters was just as happy remaining on the base.When he did go into Toccoa, it was often to attend church, where he was usually invited for dinner at the Sunday School superintendent’s home. Winters did take a short leave to meet his mother who, in what Winters felt was probably the biggest single adventure of her life, came to visit her son at camp.

    Reminds me of the Corporal Himmelstoss character from All Quiet on the Western Front. No one likes him, no one would follow him, a bad soldier who can't cope with actual combat and one who gives out vindictive, arbitrary punishment.
    But Paul (the narrator) acknowledges that his treatment did make them more survivable in combat. Distrusting, coarse, no longer innocent and instilling a reliance on comradeship with their fellow soldiers. Then he compares himself to young recruits later in the war who didn't have time to be as thoroughly beaten into shape before being sent to the front and sees them as afraid and much less likely to intuit how to survive artillery or machine guns.

    When I see him, I think of him in this role more than I do "Friends". Maybe because I spent 22 years in the Army and experienced Ahole commanders and 1SGs just like this. I remember a new 1SG yelling at the company about a dead fish in the parking lot... but that's another story...

      @@MaxwellAerialPhotography It was the new 1SGs 1st formation/day running the company, so we formed up in the parking lot in front of the hanger we worked at and he began ranting about how the company in his estimation, was low standard. He was going to fix it. He then asked who had seen the fish laying in the parking lot? (me: What?) He ranted about if we upheld ourselves to real military standards then someone would have picked up the fish from the parking lot and thrown it away. After formation I walked over to look at this fish. It was half a fish that was flattened and had been there for at least a week. I was months from retirement at that point. Guy was a piece of work...

    I never watched Friends - so I never knew him as Ross only Sobel.
    It speaks of an actor make me hate a guy in less than 3 minutes. It took Joffrey an entire season, this guy took minutes.
    But I do not demean the real life Sobel. He knew training, he knew how to break men. He knew to make soldiers. He only lacked leadership - all he had to do was ask Winters for guidance on that - however if the lower ranks saw that - it would make him look weak, even if Winters told nobody, cause the seed of incompetence was planted.
    I like to think the high brass knew of Sobel’s issues and the slight mutiny not only proved them right but showed the men were not stupid. Whoever in the high brass argued to spare them possibly knew these men would be in good hands - no matter the officer who was assigned.
    They just knew Sobel would probably meet an “accidental” case of misfire from behind - Normandy would all but ensure that.

    Only those who have been on morning inspection know how distressing it is to be at position of attention waiting the officer. I'm currently a reserve officer but one year ago I was an officer-candidate in training. Until today I remember during the morning inspection, lieutenent came up to me and looked at face. I was in position of attention hoping not to be revoked. Then he asked me the following question: Have you shaved your beard yet? I only said: yes, sir. But he kept looking into my eyes and asked me: are you sure? I said again: yes, sir. And then he asked me the same question again and I started stuttering. After that he yelled at me saying, you pig! You didn't even shave properly. In addition to being revoked, he made me do over 100 push-ups. Lol, so that's it. Greetings from Brazil. 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

    Sobel didn't get a funeral. The man who united an entire company against him to give them something to fight against.
    Breaks my heart.
    We all dislike Sobel in BOB, but there's no doubt in my mind (or probably most minds), that this man trained one of the best companies specifically because of that fact. Spawned some of the best officers and NCOs.
    When you watch this and you seethe at this man, know that he got some of the best results from his men. Even driving most of his noncoms to face the fence. I don't know if it was ever really on the table, but they didn't know that.
    Sobel is a hero. For his feats on the field, but especially for what he did off the field.
    Hell of a guy. RIP Herb.

      His style of training was indeed one of the key factors that made Easy Company as effective as they were. But his court martialing of Winters is what made people lose all respect for him. It was wrong, and had nothing to do with making Easy Company stronger. It removed the idea that he was merely being a hard ass for the sake of results.
