  • Trains With Cabooses Compilation 3! Main line freight trains with cabooses and special trains with cabooses. Bay window cabooses and older style caboose with cupola. Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, CSX, Indiana & Ohio Railway and tourist railroad cabooses. Local freight trains still use cabooses as a shoving platform for long backup moves in a few places although their numbers are dwindling. CSX stopped using a caboose on the Plant City, Florida local over a year ago. I use to love seeing that caboose in Plant City and Lakeland. Now the conductor just rides on a freight car for the long backup moves. The 2 shots of the CCET caboose came from video that I never posted and I found while looking through old videos of mine. The caboose I filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah was a lucky catch. I had no idea that it was coming.
The caboose I was riding on in the outro was filmed with Millenniumforce on the Strasburg Railroad. This is my third caboose compilation video. Thanks to Matt from Railfan Depot for contributing to this video. Matt filmed the Conrail caboose and contributed the next two shots for this video. If anyone knows of cabooses that I can film in action, please leave a comment with the location. Thanks for watching! Please leave a comment, rate and SUBSCRIBE TO JAWTOOTH!!

Thank you JAWTOOTH for recording our Caboose being delivered! It’s neat seeing it going from its final freight service to retirement into a tourist railroad for the world to enjoy and appreciate the history! This caboose actually through research actually spent a lot of its time in Roanoke virginia and bluefield West Virginia COAL COUNTRY! Neat fact my great grandfather worked for the N&W as a conductor on the Powhatan Arrow in his time, and I worked for the I&O railroad which I used this caboose on a regular basis as a shoving platform through blue ash and the mason sub for the I&O it is an actual N&W caboose with everything still original inside! A true time peice for American history.

I live near a large BNSF yard and I remember going over the overpass you used to be able to see entire strings of them, mothballed and slowly rusting on out-of-service storage tracks. Throughout the 1990s those strings imperceptibly shortened and vanished as individual units were finally scrapped.

Been a railfan my whole life, and in the last two months I've had the luck to see TWO cabooses on CP''s Vancouver-Chicago transcon by pure blind chance. First one, I'm driving on the interstate and just as I approach a railroad overpass an ancient Soo engine shows up with one ancient car and an ancient caboose. I'm 30 y/o and all three looked like they hadn't moved in my lifetime. Sure the last two at least were going to the scrapper, but still nice to see out of the blue.
Second one is even better. I'm in a small town for work, filling up my work van at a gas station, and a CP freight comes by on the main across the street from the station. As a railfan I automatically pay it casual attention even though it's just a normal grain train. Then, as I get in the van to pull out, there's a caboose on the end. Out of the blue. And this one isn't an old rustbucket, its beautifully maintained and freshly painted with CP red and and the gold CP logo. Don't know if it was going to a museum or what but this was literally a moment out of 1955. Kind of thing that every railfan dreams of.

I know I am not alone at all when I say I wish cabooses were still used. I know that most all the paperwork that used to be handled by the conductor riding in the caboose and the crew could eat, etc on the caboose, but they still look great, especially if they are kept neat and clean with a good paint job and after all, it's a TRADITION!

Totally agreed. But, as you know, it eats a huge quantity of time and "moves" when dropping & picking up loads...& that means inefficiency to the railroad. If I owned a short line or regional, I'd run 'em for sure! My employees are that valuable!!

( Not Kaitlynn) A train still looks incomplete to me without a caboose. Also known as a Crummy or a Bobber, maybe more. A caboose today is used on a work train such as a ballast dump or a local switcher that picks or spots rail cars at surrounding industries. It has been many years since I worked for the Milwaukee and the BN ( Big Nothing). I loved the Milwaukee Railroad. I am still sore about no caboose, if I had my way I'd put one on anyway even if not needed for crew. That contraption at the end of a train now has reduced a train crew by two and taken all the romance and curiosity from a train. When I was a kid seeing the caboose comming was exciting. Here comes the caboose. I suppose it is not economically feasible or insurance covered to use a empty one. I mean how much more would it cost to pull a empty little crummy behind a 100 car oil train.

1:08 That caboose has one of those things with the flashing red light on it that they hook up to the end of the last railcar which replaced the caboose.

These days with all kinds of remote control electronics gear around, these cabooses could come to good use as a warm place for a single operator running the train either direction.
